Personally, I would've liked to see Dog (being that I'll be importing my Grey Warden over, it seems fitting I have my beloved pet mabari at my side) or Shale, 'cause some people paid for her and all.
...toolset to the rescue!

Not to say I don't like him, I just honestly don't think its him coming back. I mean the only real thing he seemed interested in was finding his exwife..drinking ale, and the Deep Roads. Other than that..why would he do anything else but hangout in the tavern. Thats my view of him. hehe

Plenty of people don't like Alistair due to his namby-pambiness. Lots of people dislike Morrigan due to her inappropriately bad disapprovals (she's been known to have the Chaotic Stupid alignment). Lots of people don't like dog because he doesn't interact much.
So, how do YOU know which characters are the most popular?

According to this thread in spoilers forum.. yes.

As for Oghren, Origins is meant to be a dark fantasy game. Oghren breaks that atmosphere for me, hes like a thirteen year old who swiped some booze. If i could kill him it would to save space in the camp.
Everyone else was funnier than him because they often dont *try* to be. I had him at 80% approval one game, did his personal quest viewed his late game dialogue. Seen enough.
The only dwarf that I did like from other bioware games was Kagain in BG1. "Damn forests always filled with pansy elves"

Thats exactly my thought, Bibdy..its stated "an old favorite" well WHOSE old favorite.....thats the point. If its Bioware's old favorite then....its not ours

I don't see why they don't let you decide who it will be based on what you say to the characters at the end, then people would not be disapointed. I'm personally happy with Oghren, and would happy with anyone else. I loved exploring each character through the several play throughs that I expereienced and learning their story and background. Leiliana seems to be a better fit since we're going to Orlais. But we'll see when it comes out.

1 word: Content. What's the point in generating the character dialogue and interactivity for all 9 characters, when you only intend for the player to use one of them in the expansion?
Its just an expansion, so you really can't expect them to put in the same kind of budget they did into the original and get all of those same voice actors back to recreate dialogue.
Oghren was probably the cheapest

We were told we won't get to choose that "old favorite". Unfortunately.

You make a good point about why they wouldn't include them all. Overall, I really don't care who's in it, I just know I'll be happy to play my characters again.

Considering they're reusing more than half the resources from the original game, creating something that's a quarter of the original game's length and almost charging the same amount for the expansion that they did for the game, they better be spending some money on voice actors.

The game won't go to Orlais, you simply get to create an Orlesian Grey Warden if you don't choose to use one from a save game. Its set in Amaranthine which is a Ferelden province.

You get to go from level 25 to a level high in the 30s, thats more than a quarter of the original length.

Where did you get that from? They're raising the level cap to 30. So you may get to gain 5 levels. The length of the expansion is also unofficially tagged at 15 hours.

The two female love interests (by that I mean, the two love interests who ARE female)
Oghren
Shayla (shale returned as a dwarf)
Shale (if she doesn't get turned back)
The dog
Everyone else? Eh.

It's Bioware choice in the end and much like the decisions in the game itself, they can not possibly make everyone happy when they make a decision like deciding who to bring back.

My money is on Alistair, since some of the Bioware team had actually mentioned him as a favorite and he carries enough fangirls to get the sales. haha.
