In a game full of great personalities and deep emotional investments - he was a 2D cliche thrown in for laughs.

I personally loved how Dwarves were made so they were *not* silly comic reliefs. No beards, plenty of female Dwarves, it was certainly a breath of fresh air.

That was somewhat staled by Oghren.

Now... unless he has some reformed-drinker emotional core that will be a sub plot in DA:A, then I do not think he will be anything other than the comic relief we know - as deep as a packet of chips and a can of pepsi.

As a test... can you think of a character you would prefer *less* than Oghren?

I would prefer Jowan much more, and any other character for that matter, even Dog.

What are people's thoughts? Is there a pro-Oghren lobby out there?

Oghren is awesome! Who cares that's he's somewhat cliche? He's perfectly done.

Wynne

I like Oghren a lot. I don't use him in the party a great deal except for smaller missions, but that's mostly because people who use two handed weapons are so slow during combat that they kind of drive me crazy. I love Sten to pieces, but I don't use him much either, for the same reason. Oghren wouldn't be my first choice for returning companion, but if it is him, it'll be nice to see him again.

At the risk of sounding judgmental, I think it seems a bit... 'entitled' to complain about who the returning character may be. I have my preferences, of course, I'd love to have Alistair or Zevran in the party, even in a non-romantic sense. But they can't make EVERYONE happy, it just isn't possible since so many people have varying opinions on each and every character. Also, it's only a fifteen hour expansion pack, right? They can't shoehorn everything and everyone into it. They probably thought they were doing something pretty cool by bringing anyone back and thought we'd be excited about it, but so many people seem upset by the possibilities. With all the fuss over this, I wonder if it would have been better had Bioware not decided to include an "old favorite"?

IMO, I think we're lucky to be getting one returning character at all, and whether or not I'm disappointed by who it is (or rather, who it's NOT) is beside the fact that we're getting more of this awesome game and I'll get to see at least one familiar face.

I liked Wynne right up until she got all up in my biz-nass about who I was romancing. That pissed me off, so I told her so and she got all offended. Of course, she later apologized, but I was already cheesed at her.

I killed her while doing my "anti-heroine" playthrough. It was awesome.

Oh, I do sometimes, just for the conversations  Mostly when I am going on small missions or hitting Denerim market. I try to mix the party up as much as possible to get as many conversations as possible.

Oghren comes back in Awakening? Well, that was a let down.  I mean, I have nothing against the character really, it's just that I always leave Orzammar as the last place to go before things get pretty final with the main story. By that time I have given all his gifts to other party members or just thrown them away, so he ends up sitting in camp while I run off to save the world from the Blight. Then when I'm reading the ending epilogue texts I remember "Oh yeah, I had Oghren with me too". I basically know nothing of the guy. Plus Sten kind of fills his party slot already...

This is probably the reason you don't like him, or at least are indifferent towards him. Keep him in your party the next playthrough and you'll see what Ohgren is really like. Otherwise, you really can't judge.

I never liked Ohgren....

Until I started bringing him along just to see what he's like. Seriously, you're in a story about a doomed character on a suicide mission where most people die most the time. He's funny and adds a level of humor that helps the whole game IMO. having Ohren and Sten in your party is a good reason to hit Orzammar first.

I got the lock bashing mod just so I wouldn't be 100% required to use a spot on Liliana/Zevran, just so I could pack them both along. Priceless.

I said it once, but I'll say it again. What if he is not the "top secret party member old favorite flavor"? What if it's just a red herring? Something to throw us off track? If it really is Oghren who is coming back, why won't BioWare confirm it? Would it be that difficult for bioware to put some random skin on some character that presumably resembles some character from origins?



I bet they put "him" in the trailer for fun and to see how much speculation it rises? We'll just have to wait and see.



I trust that BioWare knows what they are doing :-D

Well, Oghren has his mug nice and painted on the newest trailer, unlike the last trailer where you only saw snippits of him that needed to be freeze-framed to identify. So he is without a doubt IN awakaning, at the very least a temp companion and at the most a perminent.

The problem with how Oghren was presented was that the main character isn't allowed to drink with him. Oghren accepts alcohol from the main PC but never offers to drink it with the main

PC. Even getting Ali boy and maybe even Sten into the drinking would be nice. Most people that are drunk are unrelatable to the sober people around them...; ever been to a party or a gathering with your boys, where everyone's drunk? Notice the sober person who's just looking at everyone else. It's the alcohol and smack talk that bonds drunk people together. All you have to do in the writing department is get drunk with the boys and take careful notes on the conversational content and delivery... then adapt that to Oghren's dialogue options.

Well, I don't dislike the guy nor like him. He's just there in the camp. Its just if you want me to make comparison with other characters, he is on the bottom of my favorite list. And he is definity the last person I want to see in any expansion.

According to the popularity poll, Oghren is the 4th most desired returning party member and the only non-romancible one... trailing behind morrigan by only 3 votes and beating shale by a 10+ lead.

Leliana is f*in taking the cake then spitting it in Sten's face though! Shes crushing Alistair, Morrigan, and Oghren!

PS- The fact that many people don't even give Oghren a chance due to the reasons listed many times over on this thread, the fact he's doing so well in the poll really says something! Just think about how much more popular he would be if he was picked up where Sten was instead of often close to the last.

I don't think there's much chance of Alistair or Morrigan returning as a companion character. My instinct is that Alistair will be King of Ferelden in Awakening, and therefore unavailable for adventuring. As to Morrigan, unless her child is the protagonist of Awakening, I doubt she'll be available as an ally. I hope they don't go that route though, it's way too similar to the Baldur's Gate arc.

Don't worry, he comes off as cliche' at first, but he really is a fairly... extreme... character.

Meaning, when was the last time you ever heard a bioware companion talk about how much they like to pleasure themselves in public.

Yeah what's up with Wynne? She got all uppity just because my Elf mage defiled the Sacred Urn of Whatever. She needs to get a life.

Where did you get that from?  They're raising the level cap to 30.  So you may get to gain 5 levels.  The length of the expansion is also unofficially tagged at 15 hours.

It was in Fernando Melo's interview. The 15 hour thing was online speculation before the game was even announced.
