Hi, I'm playing ME2 - steam DDE v1.00,
and for some reason the game doesn't recognize my save files.

2.80 dual-core intel, GeForce 9500 512mb, Realtek HD

Win XP SP3, DX 9.0c

To clarify: I can save the game fine, and I checked the "my documents" folder to see that the files are actually there,
however everytime I'm in the "Load game" screen it's entirely empty - no career, no save.
The funny thing is when I'm in the "save game" screen my saves just fine. Also, I can use the "resume game" option as well.

I have the same problem. I have ME and ME2 installed on K:\\games\\*, but ME2 fails to saved game files.

Love to get answer for this one.

There was another thread about this, but I can't find it for the life of me. Anyway, I had the same problem too and solved it by making a folder within the /Save/ folder with the name of my character. Copy your saves there, and you'll now see them under the Load Game screen.

Hope that helps.

Did not work for me. Also my normal settings wont save.

Nothing is WriteProtected, either the Savegame folder (Bioware) oder the Game folder.

Whats wrong?

The problem for me was that my "my documents" Folder was on a different partition (Drive E) and not in it's original Drive C location.

If that's the case for you, simply restoring the "My documents" folder back to it's original location will solve the problem

Yeah! Thanks for tip. I created folder in Save folder name "Jen Shepard" for my character, copied all the save files in the save folder to my new folder and it now shows my saves. I'll see if my new saves go to the right spot or if I'll have to keep copying them over.

edit: Yep, it saves and loads correctly now.

Thanks Pollo! That fixed my problem too.

But why is this a re-occuring problem for the Mass Effect series? I purchased ME1 not to long ago and it required a patch to even save the game if the "my documents" folder is on another drive/partition...

I just started playing the game and ran into this problem. Adding a folder with my character's name to the "BioWare\\Mass Effect 2\\Save" folder has done the trick and solved the problem. However I was a bit bugged that none of my characters info showed up on the load screen, where it says "Created On:", "Origin:" and "Reputation:". After some experimenting, I found that the character folder you create should follow the format below:

charactername_twodigitcode_sixdigitdate

(example: John_12_180210, Displays as "John Shepard, Created On: 18/02/2010, Origin: Spacer, Reputation: War Hero")

The first number after the name and the underscore is for your Origin (0=Blank, 1=Spacer, 2=Colonist, 3=Earthborn). The second number is your Reputation (0=Blank, 1=Sole Survivor, 2=War Hero, 3=Ruthless).

After the name and origin/rep code is a six digit date, which follows the euro standard format of day/month/year.

Once you have the folder properly named, the last field "class:" will be automatically filled in according to whatever class you gave your character when your created him/her.

None of this affects the game in any way. It only affects what is displayed on the load screen. It's really helpful for keeping track of multiple characters.

Hope this helps.

I don't think I'd seen anyone figure out which numbers meant what before, thanks for posting that.

Just discovered this, thought I'd post in case anyone else has the same problem. If your My Documents (or Documents in Win7) folder is the root directory of a hard drive, you will experience the save game problem. You probably have to log in manually every time you play, plus your Achievements are probably not being saved. The fix for the saves I've outlined above. To fix the login/Achievements problem, simply go to your BioWare\\Mass Effect 2\\BIOGame folder and create a new folder called "Profile". Fire up ME2 again, login to the Cerberus Network, play the game and earn some Achievements. The game will create a file called "Player1.prf" in the Profile folder you just created, and your login info and Achievements will be saved there.

Ultimately though, the best fix seems to be to reset your My Documents folder to a folder (D:\\My Documents\\Bioware as opposed to D:\\Bioware). I've tried manually creating the character folder, then starting a new game (under the D:\\Bioware setup) and the new character will not save, so my hack fixes won't let the game work 100%.
