That may be additional circumstance but if you chose the wrong tech specialist, he will die as well. I had Miranda as team leader every time.Tali and Legion survived as tech specialist, Garrus didn't.

Everyone already knows if you choose the wrong tech specialist, they will die. But theres a lot of people that had Tali/Legion get their head blown off and don't understand why.

I never had Tali's or Legion's head blown off when they were loyal, regardless of 2nd team leader (experimented a lot with this).

I experimented as well. Using Samara as the fire team leader got Legion killed.

I dare say there is also a relation in who you chose to lead the other party based on who you take with you. Just because they are loyal to you doesn't mean they'll show the same loyalty or trust to each other.

Interesting...I chose Thane and Tali lived..even though Thane got killed as a team leader of the 2nd team.

It might be based on who the devs rate as the most accurate shooter, and not neccessarily the best leader. Miranda(she says, near the beginning of the game, that can she shoot a moving target 1000 yards away), Garrus, and Thane are precision shooters, able to provide the best cover fire for the tech specialist.

I only lost Legion when I sent him to open the door. Zaheed was my 2nd team leader.
