system specs

OS: windows vista x64 SP1
CPU: AMD dual core 5200+ 2.7ghz
RAM: 4GB
VIDEO CARD: Nvidia Gforce 9800GT
all drivers, direct X ect are up to date
game being used: both mass effect 1 and mass effect 2

when i play ME1 about 30 mins into game play my PC crashes, when it crashes i dont get an error message the screan just goes black. in ME2 same situation after 30mins PC locks up except that not only does it lock up it completely shuts down. These two games are the only ones i play that have been doing this. ive tried updating everthing i can think of to no avail even tried opening up my PC and cleaning it thinking it might be overheating also dosent work.

ok, first of all, what resolution are you running the games on, also what kind of PSU are you using at the moment. Cause from what I see, your comp should run fine with the game, but since 9800GT is a power card, if your PSU is not high enough, when you run is on high res (1920x1080), it can cause an immediate shutdown (happened to me before with ATI 4890 with only 500W PSU). Hope this helps

Another thought is temp. Use RealTemp. A computer that locks up and shuts down is usually indicative of overheating. More specifically, the CPU.

Also what driver version are you using? Have you tried downgrading to a 18x version or beta? That can help as well.

On the topic of PSU's - 500w could very well be enough to run the system, even taxed. The question is how stable the rails are. A cheap 500w PSU might not be capable of supplying stable rails and can drag or cause the system to hang. It is unlikely it will shut it down unless its failing.

500w is definitely enough given your not sli-ing or such. as low8all is getting at though, its more important whether or not you have enough amps on the 12V, should be around 30-40.

ok so i lowered the res to 1024x780 and it still crashes, i think it might be the temp but that is odd because i play other games on this system with no problem even ones that are more taxing
