I have the standard, shop bought version and I'm not making any progress. Does anybody know what missions I shouldn't do if I don't want to reach the point where it's too late to go back and get Zaeed?

Okay, I was having this problem when i first got ME2. Hopefully this solution works for you too.

1: Load ME2

2: wait for error message saying 'cerberus cannot connect' or whatever

3:Tab out of ME2

4: Open Firefox (or whatever browser you use and login to bioware social club)

5: Tab back into ME2

6: Connect to Cerberus network.

You may have to enter your EA account info again.

That worked for me each time I had that problem. (Not sure that logging into bioware is important but those are the steps I took verbatim.)

Hope that helps.

the problem is, that the game doesn't find the internet connection. I'm 100% sure I am connected to the internet, there is no trying to connect, it just goes instantly to the error message.

Oh well, I hope till I finished Mass Effect 1 again this issue will be resolved through an upcoming patch...

edit:

my avatar shows the mood I'm in right now ;)

I have the same problem as Lynxomat exactly. I'm running vista. Everyone else?

I've just tried Binjuice's idea. No luck. I even ran my computer on duel screen and surfed the net on one while ME2 ran on the other. Still no joy.

Here's a question. Why does a single player only game need an active internet connection in the first place? Some of these issues could be avoided by  installing  these things as updates and play offline like in the past.

It doesn't NEED an active internet connection, I believe it is only used for updates and add on content. The game itself runs fine once you pass activation. I've done 1 pass through the game already and just started my 2nd run through. The only complaint I have is the fact that the boxed editions need to have the CD in the drive all the time while - I think - the STEAM version doesn't.

I can't find the thread with my theory on it but I did find something else

http://social.biowar...06/index/924495

failing that have you tried giving admin status to the ME 2 exe?

Mass Effect 2\\Binaries has the exe in it, right click properties then at the bottom iirc there's a check box to tick that says "run as administrator"

I've just turned off my windows firewall, opened all the ports, turned off my antivirus and run the exe as an admin. Still nothing.

I'm NEVER going to pre-order or buy a deluxe version of a Bioware game ever again.

Lmao.. I said the same thing after ME1 was a complete ****storm.. and yeaaaa.. So pretty sure I'll just be done with Bioware all around.. Just not happy I had to crack a game I payed 65 bucks for.. and don't get my DLC... -_-

Same error here. I think we have to wait for the fix or the BioWare response.

I had try allowing port 18081, but it didn't work for me. This port is the same port of the EA/dragonage conexion. If this helps someone...

The game companies with these protections can only spoil the experience to people who bought the game, I had to finished the game without the extra content and without the blood dragon armor, I bought the delux edition for nothing

Try opening the Configuration Utility and click on "System" and in the drop down check "Dedicated Internet Connection." This fixed the connection issue for me.

My idea is a Bioware/Ea's answer. I have lost many time trying to connect the damn cerberus network.
