I've just got my copy of Mass Effect 2. Started the installation, about 1/4 way through I get "The installation of Mass Effect 2 has failed. Unable to open a data file." :crying: Any ideas as to what the problem is?

No idea but others have reported failed installations.

Try copying the contents of the DVD to your HDD and installing locally. Also let the game install to it's default path.

I've seen on other threads that others with similar problems are going to the EA store site and using their CD key to download a digital copy of the game and installing that way.

I have limited bandwidth, so unfortunately downloading the game is not an option. I have already contacted the company I ordered the game through, hope I can exchange it.

I can tell you, what the problem was, that I encountered.
Basically, I got the same problem as yourself, a failed installation. I tried to figure out which data it was, which could not be opened.
Disk 1 was in the Drive, and the Archive to be opened was "english.rar", which obviously could not be opened, because that archive is on Disk 2. There is no problem when installing in German, French, Italian or Spanish, cause thei're all on Disk 1. Sadly, there was no prompt to switch disks, just aborting the installation with a useless error report.
However, you should be able to avoid this error by using two drives containing both disks. If you do not have two drives, you could use a virtual drive, copy your disk 1 to your hard drive, mount it, and put in the Disk 2 in your dvd drive (also, you could mount both disks in a virtual drive system, doesn't matter).

I hope, that will solve any future problems with that.

Edit: I don't really know, why this occurs, because I did not have any problems installing it on my laptop. Maybe it's because the new machine has 64bit OS.
