Hi guys im new to the community so i dont know if this has already been mentioned, but i have just bought mass effect 2 and the game tends to crash every 5.10 mins. My computers meets all the recommended stats and my graphics card is a 9800 gt. I love the game, but would like to play it for longer without having to reload all the time. I have put all the graphics down and all my drivers are current. I have thought about installing previous drivers but im not sure if this would help
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

It would definitely help to know your system specs and specific 'crash' type. BSOD, CTD, Display Reseting, lockups/freezes etc
Also if you can check your temps when the game crashes, that would help diagnose the situation if there is indeed an overheating issue. Use RealTemp.

Sure i have windows Vista ultimate 64 sp 1
I also have 4.00 gb ram
Intel core 2 duo cpu 2.53 e7200
and geforce 9800 gt
direct x 10.
I had previously played mass effect 1 without problems when i first came out, but recently even that tends to crash every 5-10 minutes. Thanks for the help low8all
With the crash type it jsut says end program, and that a problem has caused the program to stop working?

No problem Justjhk. If possible, it would really help to know the exact error. Either copy it down and post it or take a screenshot of the error box and post that.
If it's a standard "blahblah.exe has stopped working and will be closed' type error, the fix might be as simple as uninstalling then reinstalling. But we can't tell until you provide the exact error. And from what I gather, this is a CTD, yes? Crash To Desktop?

honestly, this doesn't seem to be a hardware issue at all given what you said about ME1. Id do a check to see if you have any suspicious processes running i.e. spyware and the like.

On a side note, if older programs that once worked fine are also experiencing the same issue the problem could run deeper than just a corrupted install.
Definitely check the temps after you install RealTemp and crash again. But overheating/high temps won't necessarily crash an exe - a corrupted exe would crash, almost immediately but not necessarily 100% of the time. A corrupted install could work fine until something specific happens, could be playing a cutscene, accessing a menu, loading an area etc etc. If its something specific like that, you should try and narrow down what that might be - you say ever 5-10 minutes but is that every 5-10 minutes in the same spot, or different areas?

Thanks. The error is a crash to desktop and the message i receive is , " A problem cause the program to stop working correectly. Windows will close the program and notfiy you if a solution is available. I have wondered if it is a result of an overheating problem as the game is starting to crash more regulary but that could be just random?

In response to crapmonster you could be right but i am unsure what it could be. On a general note, Low8all could be right in the sense that other games such as cod6 are also playing up so perhaps it is a faulty driver or microsoft problem? The game has started crashing at the load screen and is crashing in random places such as a cutscene or during gameplay.. Thanks guys for the help much appreciated

This sounds exactly, precisely like what's happening to me. Except that I'm running Windows 7. I would really like to be able to finish the game after all this time. Anyone have an idea on what I could do to fix this? I've updated all of my drivers, installed the latest DirectX Redist pack (which seemed to make it better for a couple of hours, but after that it's gotten even worse than before. My game crashes every two minutes or so (screen goes black, and I get the message "Mass Effect 2 has stopped working"). Mass Effect 1 and Dragon age ran on this computer without so much as a stutter. What am I doing wrong? O.o

Oh, and my game is also patched, with a whole bunch of DLC installed (everything except the Collector's Armor, or the Pepsi stuff).

A CTD will generate an event in the Windows Application Log. What is this message?

I could take a look at that, of course, but I've been looking around the forum, and it seems that a lot of people have had similar problems in the past. However, I cannot find many recent theads that discuss this. Have these problems resolved themselves? Has a fix been found that I just haven't encountered yet?
A long thread about similar problems: http://social.biowar...index/830507/13
A fix that unfortunately did nothing for me: http://social.biowar...06/index/766790
Edit: In my case, it's the good old "Mass Effect 2 has stopped working" Error. I've tried pretty much every solution I could find (most of them mentioned in the thread above), and the game is not only unplayable; it is getting worse. The crashes have become more frequent over time; starting at about once every 30 minutes, and now occurring once every 2-3 minutes. The game is practically unplayable.
I have a solid (if not stellar) system (with Windows 7) that should be capable of running Mass Effect 2 without any trouble. Nothing is overheating. I do not think that the problem is in the hardware; nor is it likely that it has anything to do with drivers, since I have updated everything rigorously. The Core Affinity fix gave me a few extra minutes to play (I was up to about 20 minutes the first time I tried it), but it seems to be going downhill again. I have been trying to figure this out for days, and this is the second time since I bought the game that I'm trying to get this to work without any success. It really is kicking my butt completely.
And I was one of those people who pre-ordered the game. I stood outside when the store opened so that I would get my hands on ME2 as quickly as possible. Months later, I still haven't been able to play it all the way through.

I've got the same problem. Encountered the CTD once or twice during the first play-through, but now it's all the time. Seems to hit during fights with praetorians.
