KalliChan, don't let anybody fool you into thinking the word "few" describes us. Female gamers are not "few"--if we were, then we wouldn't have had more than one love interest! Women make up over half the pop of the world last I heard, 40% of gamers are female according to the ESA, 5 of the 12 people (roughly 40%) randomly selected to go to London for the Dragon Age event were female, and the female-to-male poll in my signature quickly climbed to 38% female and has been going back and forth between that and 36%.
Mass Effect 2 has already sold OVER TWO MILLION copies. If we just take the two million figure, and we take the average of the male to female poll with the ESA data to make a rough guess between 37 and 38%, then we can estimate that by now, about 800,000 women have played Mass Effect 2.
EIGHT. HUNDRED. THOUSAND. WOMEN.
Yes, there are [b]more[/i] males playing Mass Effect... but there are enough females that the majority of the straight dudes could find a girl who played the game somewhere reasonably close to home, if they go looking in gamer's circles. In other words, don't for a moment let yourself think in terms of "few" anymore. More and more women either had a cool dad who helped them appreciate unconventional hobbies, or a supportive boyfriend who was adorable at them until they grudgingly tried the pastime and realized it's awesome, and those women will probably pass their love of gaming on to their daughters someday. I know a mom who DMs for her two kids. I think in coming generations the gap will continue to close until it's roughly equal.
So in other words, there's a reason why we got three love interests this time around. The devs were trying to be awesome for us, which I love them for, and the reason they were doing it is because around 600,000 women (using the 37% figure rounded up again and the 1.6 million figure that I've heard in regards to ME1) played the original Mass Effect. And since ME2 is already past the two million mark, if it keeps going like this there may be a MILLION female fans for this game. You do not want to lose a MILLION customers. That is a whole lot of money. So it's just plain smart business for them to be looking out for us, too--I just think they could've used some extra constructive criticism from women to maximize the enjoyment of playing a FemShep.
Anyway, the whole thing that I liked about Garrus in ME1 was that he was so sweet, and so much more interesting in personality than Kaidan. After ME2 I changed my mind. When your only option to start a romance with somebody is to do some pervy, awkward flirting... I don't know. It feels utterly wrong and bass-ackwards. Like somebody completely misunderstood Garrus' appeal.
I don't think anybody had a sort of... kink for turians. I think it was all about who we thought he was. That gentle respectfulness he showed, that interest in Shepard as a mentor, that mellow calm, that renegade spirit born of a desire to help, his love for his job. And so the fact that your interactions with Garrus start out with all that talk about reach and flexibility which was about as subtle and caring as a mack truck slamming into a brick wall... weird. Just weird. Pretty much the opposite of what I would've hoped for.
I don't get why two out of three romances intended for FemShep are basically flirtations and only Miranda is a fling for MaleShep. I would've thought it'd be the other way around. For once, I think some gender stereotyping might've been a good thing. One fling is great, especially since Jacob was still somebody you'd have to see as a real person, much like Miranda, just not a serious relationship... but the others... I don't see anybody being attracted to an alien EVER without some sort of unique emotional bond forming FIRST. I think otherwise, you'd stick to your species.
Now, I liked seeing Jacob's abs. A LOT. And I enjoy looking at Kal Reegar and Thane. I did feel they definitely had love for us ladies, that they meant well, but that on a few key points they lost the plot. I think all of us would have preferred seeing THANE'S abs, which are human-esque and lean-muscled despite being green... and most of us would've preferred a lot less dialogue about his dead wife and abandoned kid.
It's like Nines says, only in a non-sarcastic way. "Nice effort. Execution needs a little work."
