So, I just did my first planet scanning and it immediately killed any desire I had to keep playing. Why was this allowed to exist in the game in its mind-numbingly boring state? Is this just another sign that games need to be dumbed down fo rthe console crowd? I can think of at least 10 ways to explore space that don't involve moving my mouse 10 feet for every inch the cursor moves on screen. This really needs to be patched to be much faster or take it out of the game entirely.

Why do *I* have to manually scan anyway? I thought I was supposed to be the captain of the ship? I should have Joker or one of the anonymous Red Shirts doing it for me!

You do NOT have to do it.

I only scan "rich" and "good" planets and I never had insufficent minerals despite purchasing every upgrade I found.

Because everyone and their mother complained about driving the Mako around for hours in ME1. That is why you're scanning.

I think what he is trying to say is that Sheppard should order someone else to a scan the planet and then have a report provided afterwards.

I prefer this A LOT to what they had in Mass Effect 1. The Mako was an alright vehicle but finding the ores was plain dull after the first planet. I am glad they made the switch to this... it's actually more interesting and fun to do (Just do it after missions and stuff). Also makes more sense to me...

I perfered driving in the old game just driving around the odd planets and half the time you would always find a new mission or just some pirates to kill and steal from, now just holding the LT button down until you find something, then just shooting a prob into the ground....... BORING, other than that though i still love the game and the story.

Just as an fyi OP... there is an upgrade for the scanner you can buy that significantly increases the speed of your curser while scanning. I'd recommend looking into that before just quitting altogether =P

Edit: ...and i take offense to "dumbed down for the console crowd." Just because we play games on consoles doesn't mean i can't see a stupid game when i see one, remember ME1 came out for 360 first.

There's a trainer you can use that gives you resources so you don't have to spend hours doing the same thing over and over. :)

I love the "boring and tedious" planet scanning. Far better than trying to drive the Mako up mountains.

IMO, we could have at least have had an auto scan option, which would just be a one button press and would go till the planet was low on resources. And would only yield 50% or less of what manual scanning would have done. Bam easy compromise.

Yeah, not a big fan of the scanning thing either....but it deff is better than driving around in a mako on an empty planet!

And yes OP, everything has to be dumbed down for the console people...why not! I mean if you don't like it, BLAME THE CONSOLE PEOPLE! lame....

I doubt it's any more enjoyable on the consoles, lol. Holding the LT down for prolonged periods of time can get tiring! But...I prefer that than the Mako. I understand they could've made the scanning faster, but I always figured it was slow so that you can pinpoint which spot to launch a prove in when the scanner starts to scream. Unless pinpointing doesn't grant you extra resources... O.O

The fact is the Scanning planets inherently is not fun for me. If feels tedious but a necessary evil that I feel I can't avoid if I want to be able to survive the suicide mission to come.

The fact of the matter is the action of scanning simply isn't fun (at least for me), and hence a bad design for a game in my opinion.

Good advice. Not really, I blame Bio thinking console players must have these.

Someone(s) had to pad the games with mandatory mini-games. (Which I hate!) The mandatory ones that is.

Do they really feel these are needed for people to stay interested in the games they produce? ugh

Scanning seems like a good job for EDI. I'd pay for a DLC to assign the task to her.

Well, you CAN collect Element Zero in Missions as well, but i find it much easier to gather by doing both. Element Zero is the only mineral i need, the rest i have in abundance! :D

Myself i have no trouble scanning at all. It has to be done so we can research all the goodies ASAP! :D

Honestly how is this any better?  At least in ME you drove around the planet, here I'm just moving my mouse up and down and firing 30 probes at a planet, they might as well have called this Probe Wars.  This is a hundred times more tedious then planet exploration or the inventory system in ME was.

That was the first upgrade I got, it didn't make it any better.

Oh for sure.  I have the upgrade too, I was just assuming that's why it was so slow to scan in the first place.  With the upgrade though it's much easier to do, I agree, even though I'd still prefer to tweak the speed just a little bit.  :)

How can you love planet scanning?  You stare at the same screen for 5-10 minutes firing off a prob every once in awhile.  At least with the old system you were driving around on a planet or just able to scan the entire planet and go.

While better then the Mako quests it's still rather boring.
