Just got ME2, excited to play, all goes fine install goes fine (minus the AWC.dll error which i've sorted) I start playing get through the beginning bit (when the ship crashes) without a hitch, no lag, no sound problems, nothing.

I get into the facility (after the ship) and start running around and at the second fight with the mechs suddenly my entire computer locks up, the screen goes all blotchy, sound gets messed up, its hard to describe, but the entire computer just dies. I rebooted, started the game again, it dies again.

My computer easily meets the requirements so i highly doubt it's that..but its pretty much unplayable, i can't go 5 minutes without my computer crashing.

Please help? Anyone? :(

Specs if needed:
Windows XP (SP3)
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 6000+ (3Ghz)
GeForce GT240 (1GB)
4Gb RAM

EDIT: I'm using the digital distribution from GamersGate, if that changes anything.

Does it crash consistently in the same spot?

Hi, you are not alone. I also have the same problem but with Windows 7 and an ATI card. And we're not alone. Also two other users have this problem.

You can try to check your Event Viewer messages. Maybe there you find a reason for this error. I will do the same this evening.

@low8all: Concerning my problem. YES! Always at the same spot. Take a look at my link. There you find a detailed description of my problem. I think Sagri079 has the same problem.

Also, have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling?

I don't crash at the same points. I get past the second mech assault (talked about in my first post) i got past that when i restarted, to where you have to sprint through fire, and it crashed then.

EDIT: Reinstalled once already, didn't seem to solve anything.

Der sorry andinin, I was asking Sagri079 that question about whether or not it crashes at the same spot but got confused when you answered and pointed to your link, which I looked for in Sagri079's post, not yours. Sorry about that.

Sagri079, what is the AWC.dll eror you sorted out? When you say your computer locks up and the screen goes all blotchy is there still audio? Is it skipping?

Have you checked your temps? Use RealTemp and post the result back here when/if you crash again.  Since it's not crashing at the same point, a corrupted install isn't likely (and since you've already reinstalled once before and it didn't change, then even less likely)  Another possible problem could be RAM. Have you tested it at all?

No problem, but maybe the solution for Sagri079 could also work for me ;-)

But to check RAM is not a bad idea. I will also do this :-)

Andinin, in Windows 7 there is a built-in memory diagnostics tool you can run so it should be a relatively easy thing to do.

Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Windows Memory Diagnostic> Select the option you want to use and that's it. Let it run in default first, no point in stressing out your RAM or letting it run for hours and hours unless you know you have a RAM issue or the issue persists and you really *need* to stress the RAM to find out.

Sagri079, to test your RAM you'll need to download a 3rdP Memory Diagnostics tool. You can Google that "RAM tester" and get all the info you need if that is indeed a route you want to take.

@low8all
Thanks for the reply :-)

I'll start testing stuff now, the AWC.dll error is the error that some people are having when starting the game. About a misconfiguration, but i got around it with the fix someone posted.

As far as temperatures go, my CPU stays around 40 degrees C, up to around 50-60 degrees when gaming. GPU stays around 30-40 degrees.

I'll start testing my RAM now and reply when I've found out anything.

EDIT: Yeah, the audio still plays...but not how you would expect it to play, it stutters a lot similar to what the graphics are doing, jumping.

I had a similar problem, although no one replied to my post. What I did was just grit and bear it until I was past the part where I was having problems. Once I got past the part in game that was crashing me, the crashes stopped. I've been playing for several hours a day since then, and I haven't had another problem since. It may be a localized error or bug in the game itself that is manifesting for people at certain areas.

Also, try turning down your anti-aliasing and cinematic lights in the pre-launch configuration utility. I read a blog post at another site talking about how ME2 and ATI cards don't get along if the AA is set above 8x. I lowered it down to 8x, and lowered the cinematic lights from 3 to 2 then restarted my computer (not just the game) and it seemed to not have another problem.

It's worth a try, anyway.

hi everyone,

i have a very similar problem in that I crash every few minute into the game. But the stranger part about my problem is that i don't freeze on the same spot. After restarting my computer, i will be able to play past the crashing point for a few more minuets before crashing again. For example, I crashed first after Miranda and Illusive man speech and i crash, restarting and i will be able to get to shepard starting the rescue of joker and crash, finally i was able to rescue joker and die then crash after shepard woke up. Note that i will crash not only in cut scenes loading video but also during the gameplay sessions. It took me half an hour of crashing to get to recreating Shepard. I have had no problem with any other games such as Modern Warfare 2 and Mass Effect 1.

System Spec:
Window Xp sp3
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 6400+
Geforce 9600 GT
4gb RAM

I am using the DVD version of the game
I tried uninstall and reinstall once
i turned down all my graphics and resolution to the lowest. Putting it in window mode allow me to last longer
I tried the -nomoviestart with no help

Same issue...lots of crashes and in different spots.  Looks like people with differnt computer builds are having the issue...so I'm not so sure it's related to our setup.

FYI  - here's mine:

using standard retail DVD game

Vista 64 SP1
I7-920 (overclocked to 3.2, temps around 45C)
6gig RAM
GTX 260 (core 216) using 196.21 driver

Lots of cooling, hard drive space, and good power.  Other games run fine...:(

exact same problem as the guys above. Thinking that it could be heat related as when i turned the computer off 4 20 mins and restarted the game i got at least 1 hour game play before crash and then it returned to crashing every 5-10 mins

Back again. Still have the problem but now the game crashes on different spots. It doesn't matter what I do. My PC dies.

I have reinstalled the game, it crashes. I have also installed the ATI 10.1 driver Crossfire Hotfix for Mass Effect 2, it crashes. I have tested my RAM, no errors. What else should I do??

Now I try to play the game with modified video settings, but I do not think that this will work.

Same problem here.  It doesn't always crash in the same place though. It usually crashes during a cutscene or when someone's talking to my pc.  I installed an external hard drive thinking maybe I didn't quite have enough hard drive space even though I met the minimum requirements.  It hasn't helped at all.  I uninstalled the game and reinstalled it and now can't even get past where you learn that Joker is going to be your new pilot.  The sound starts a repetitive loop and everything freezes.   I have Windows XP, tons of hard drive space now, an Nvidia 9600 GT, an Intel dual core 3.0 ghz, and 3 gigs of ram.  So I should be able to run this game with no problems.  I hope someone from Bioware replies soon.  Hopefully they are working on a patch.  We all spent too much money on this game to have a game that is not playable. Perhaps something is wrong with 9600 GT? Three of us have this card and all of us had these strange crashes.

Having the same problem with an 8800 mGTX - I'm thinking it's a heat problem. The longer I give it a rest, the longer I can play before crashing. Are you guys experiencing that as well?

Mine isn't a heating issue, I don't think.  It crashed last night and I just left my pc off all night.  This morning I attempted to get past the most recent crash section I've experienced and had it on for less than 5 minutes before it crashed again.

well I had the same issue with the game crashing every 5 min when dealing with the first mech. But once I was able to get past that part, I havent had any issues since, and I have all settings maxed out the whole time. Played the game for a good 2 hours last night with no hiccups.  Never had any issues with ME1.  So I am guessing that it doesnt have to do with our computers processing power, just some glitch in the game. hopefully there wil be a patch soon.

Here are my specs

Windows 7 64 bit
HP i7 920 2.67hz
6 gigs DDR3
ATI Radeon HD 4850 1gig

No I got the same issue. Crash like every 5-10 minutes. sometimes, textures get screwed up first and after that crash. From the start, it gave me some graphic driver error (got 192 or smth). So I updated it and now game just crash. As fpr you, always in the different spots.

I got:
Intel core 2 duo 3GHz
Win XP SP3
Geforce 8800GT 512MB (196.21 driver)
3,25 GB RAM
