Crashes every 5 minutes (ME2)

Ok, so i think i MAY have solved the issue on my computer at least
I've tried almost everything
Updating every driver imaginable
Reinstalling
Changing various graphics settings
Disabling stuff in the nvidia control panel
Renaming movies
Nothing worked
What i did was
I have 2 x 2GB ram sticks in my computer so as a final desperate attempt, i tried to disable half my ram in Vista, rebooted and started the game
I've just finished playing for 40 minutes with no crash, which is 8 times more than previous attempts
I can't be sure that it's all solved but it seems to work for me
Disabling ram in vista is done by running msconfig->boot->advanced options and setting max memory to half of the total system ram
After this, a reboot is nescessary
Maybe it can help somone else
Note that stress tests of my ram last night, yielded no result so i don't think i have faulty ram but no matter what it is, it seems like it might be solved

this affinity fix is as follows, open mass effect 2 via exe, alt+tab out, open task manager, right click the process, go to affinity, then untick "core 1", press ok, then tick it after, and press ok again
p.s. this problem seems to be on dual core systems, i cant see any quad core systems having issues running it
so this is an affinity bug for me, ME2 isnt fully recognising both cores, so it only uses one and is essentially "overloaded", you are all free to try this workaround, feedback too
also apparently you need to do this every time you open ME2
if you cant change affinity as administrator, go into task manager and click "show from all users" or something, this will prompt the run as administrator box, click yes, and now you can change
after using this method i ran at max settings without any issues, so for me this affinity fix works

I tried affinity thing, didnt do much for me. Though if Bioware acually cared to test things out, it would be great if they checked if there is something to it
That would require them to stop using all their money to buy really expensive jewels to grind up and snort.

and what was your problem? if its not a constant crash on a dual core system then perhaps a startup, there are many workarounds scattered around the net.. i tried a lot of them before the affinity

No my game freeze up around 5-10 minutes into the game. Around an hour ish if I play in window mode.
well if its not overheating then i guess the affinity fix SHOULD work, did you do it in the right order?

I'm a bit reluctant to try to be honest, since all this forced rebooting i've done to my system seems to mess it up.
EDIT: Also, my computer recognized my two cores, seems odd that ME2 would not, considering Bioware blames it on the OS, not the game

The process affinity fix allowed me to play for about an hour instead of crashing in 5 minutes. It still crashed eventually, but at least I could play for that hour.
Thanks Razir-Samus for highlighting this.
But that it still crashes makes it a problem and not really a fix :-/ I can go longer in windowed mode but it will eventually freeze up, forcing me to restart the computer. It's not really a good way to play the game.
So far I havent seen any fixes, just ways to increase play time before the games crash/freeze up

Has anyone with a X48 Motherboard try these steps? I have a Gigabyte GA-X48-DS5 and I downloaded the "Intel INF installation" Chipset drivers 9.1.1.1020 from http://www.gigabyte....64bit#anchor_os. Well long story short I installed the executable but on the device manager it was still showing the various x38/x48 chipset versions as 6.1.1.x. Why is this? Am I getting the wrong drivers? If anyone can help, thanks in advance.one900meat wrote...
OK... Here's what I did and it seems to have miraculously fixed the crashing that was happening every 5-15 minutes... I just got done playing the game for over an hour and it played flawlessly!
In the ME 2 Game Launcher, I changed my Video settings to the essentially minimalist:
Bloom: Default
Film grain: off
Motion blur: off
Dynamic shadows: off
Light: On
Cinematic Lights: 1
Spherical: off
Anisotropic: off
Save/Exit
----
Then I renamed these two intro movies so that they didn't play....
/MassEffect 2/BioGame/Movies/
BWlogo.bik
ME_EAsig_720p_v2_raw.bik
Just add something at the beginning or end of the filename. Probably should keep them regocnizable if you ever want to add them back...
----
Then I upgraded my Audio, Video, and motherboard drivers.
The video did not seem to help. Neither did the Audio. The panacea seems to have been the upgrade to my northbridge drivers which updated my USB filters and my NB filters. I obtained the updates at the AMD website under the motherboard/chipset download drivers section (access right at the front page using a pulldown menu). Of course, this all could have been a fluke, but it seems mighy suspicious that it worked immediately after updating my MoBo chipset drivers... My computer specs are:
AMD Phenom II x4 955 Black Edition CPU
Asus M4A78T-E MoBo (790GX chipset)
Onboard Radeon HD 3300 (with 128Mb Sideport)
4Gb OCZ Gold 1600 Memory
Windows Vista 32-bit
DirectX 11
Catalyst 10.1
Let me re-iterate, the magic seemed to have happened when I updated my chipset drivers at AMD/Catalyst. For those running the AMD 790GX chipset, the link to the Catalyst download page is: HERE
In the "Download Drivers" menu pull-down "motherboard/chipset", your OS, and your onboard Radeon card version (Hd 3300 for 790 GX). In the page it takes you to, scroll down to the --> Southbridge Drivers download. <-- That link takes you straight to the driver download EXE. It is for Windows 7 and Vista both 32- and 64-bit.
I hope this helps others!!

did you tune down settings? i know my rig can handle it, but others might not be in the same position

It's silly that I'd have to tune it down considering im above recommended specs, and when I got high settings on, it dosnt lag or anything. Tuning stuff down to be able to play the game on PC sounds insane. Anyway, I might try the affinity thing tomorrow. Im going to deliver my computer in on monday since all the freezing(and forced reboots as a result) with ME2 has caused my computer to behave all weird.

indeed it does, i did that just as a precaution when i first changed the affinity, but now ive pumped all the settings to max with no noticable lag, just had a 2 hour session with no crash

so it will use both cores and not just 1
This fix does nothing for me. My system has a quad core processor though.

Desktop system specs are:
Windows 7 (64-bit)
2x 2.66GHz dual-core Intel Xeons
512MB nVidia Geforce 8800 GT
4GB RAM
Later I ended up installing Mass Effect 2 on my MacBook Pro laptop via Boot Camp. It has a similar configuration except for the processor and mobile video chipset. Hasn't had any problems at all.
Laptop specs are:
Windows 7 (64-bit)
2.4GHz dual-core Intel Core 2 Duo
256MB nVidia Geforce 8600M GT
4GB RAM
I repeat, Mass Effect 2 has played just fine on the laptop. Bit slower loading because of the hard disk, but playable at least for the time being. Do miss the desktop though.

I was playing this on a friends computer and he had the exact same problem - in fact the furthest he could get was the character creation bit where you can choose your face (after all the cutscenes). The game constantly locked up (black screen or jittered screen with jumping or looped sound). I confirmed that it wasnt an overheating problem on either the gfx card or the cpu. I changed the game to windowed and lowered various graphical options but it still did the same thing.
Then I remembered something I saw before, maybe for the original Mass Effect or maybe for KOTOR. If you go to your display options and remove all themes, reset to the basic windows theme and make sure that things like windows blinds/rainmeter/etc are all turned off then the game works perfectly. I did all that and the game hasnt crashed once since then.
The system in question is a fully patched XP pro, radeon x1950 with latest drivers (nov i think). Removing the themes (resetting to Windows classic) fixed the crashing. No drivers or any other programs were installed between it crashing all the time and not at all. Hope this helps some people.
