Curious to test my theory, because up until installing Mass Effect 2 and updating to the latest Geforce Series 8 drivers, I hadn't had any trouble with any games. I reformatted and reinstalled Windows 7 on my desktop. Reinstalled all my standard driver packages, but for the GeForce 8800 GT, I went to nVidia's website and downloaded the previous stable archived version. Release November 26, 2009 (version 195.62). Also downloaded all critical Windows updates. Afterward I reinstalled Mass Effect 2 and its DLC packages. Ran the Configuration Utility and left everything on defaults except changing my resolution to the native. No problems. Played several missions after loading up my previous saves (where it typically froze less than a few minutes in) and it's fine now.
I can't be totally certain if it's an nVidia driver release issue since I completely erased everything on my system and started over with nothing but Mass Effect 2. However, I seldom use this desktop for anything else other than PC gaming and haven't really had the time for other games since Dragon Age several weeks ago. I'm going to continue with Mass Effect 2 and see if it experiences any further problems and report anything. If no further problems, then I'll assume (at least for me) it was nVidia's latest stable driver release and recommend rolling back.
