Hmm. Maybe the shader system also has something to do with it? Had problem like this solved in ME1, by clearing the shader chache file. Got tons of unnesessary shader logs ( or something like this ) and my PC could not process it well when there were too many shader-rendered models on screen ( like you said collectors ship - it is full of irregular structures and light effects ).

crashes happened at the beginning when you wake up as shepard, and on the tali rescue mission, not sure about the beginning but the tali mission has a lot of light effects going on, and there is no option to clear the shader cache for ME2. atleast not without steam..

For Steam users: go to Steam\\\\SteamApps\\\\\\\\common\\\\mass effect\\\\Binaries\\\\MassEffectConfig.exe let it scan the system then under the Repair section click on “Delete Local Shader Cache Files”
Does the ME1 config tool also clear the ME2 shader cache?

Hmm, I dont think the ME1 tool would clear the ME2 cache and no such repair option exits in ME2.

Here is what I did so far, and what didn't help:

1. Updated to Catalyst 10.1
2. Updated Chipset drivers to a version from January 2010
3. Updated Motherboard BIOS to newest Version
4. Loaded "Fail-Safe" settings in MoBo-BIOS
5. Set the GPU fan manually to 100%
6. Deactivated C1E / EIST of the CPU in the BIOS
7. Started Steam as Administrator
8. Set the Video-Settings to default in the Launcher and set my own settings ingame
9. Try to play in window mode (bordered and non-bordered)
10. Deleted the shader cache with the Tool of ME1 (...)
11. Gauged the voltage of the power supply with a multimeter
12. Checked the integrity of game cache
13. Defragmented the game cache
14. Un-checked and re-checked the CPU core affinity
15. Deactivated AntiVirus (Avira)
16. Deinstalled AntiVirus

===

What still can be tried out:

1. Underclock (!) the GPU
2. Play with lowest details on a system, on which the game actually runs smoothly

... any more suggestions?
For example: how do I limit my system to 2GB of RAM in Windows 7 as one of you suggested

My System:
Windows 7 Pro 64-Bit
Intel Core2Duo 6750
XFX HD4850 512 MB GDDR3
Corsair 4 GB DDR2-800
beQuiet 500W
Catalyst 10.1
Steam Version

That is a nice list, most of the things you tried didn't get me to run the game either. I also physically removed a ram stick to limit my system to 2GB but that didn't help.

Thing that worked for me with a HD4870 was lowering my GPU clock and Memory clock for about 5%. (GPU -30MHz, Mem -50MHz) Not really a solution, since I am positive my card was not overheating on any of its parts, nonetheless I have been able to play because of it....

It is easy to do, just open Catalyst Control Center go to ATI Overdrive. Enable it and set the clocks a little lower, hit apply and try it out.

conclusion, stop ****ing about with your systems, nothing you do will help the game any more, you will just end up destroying your graphics card or worse, mine is already dying, ive noticed random 1-2 second black screens and im now getting a buzzing sound that comes and goes.. this is after 10 or so crashes in mass effect 2..

hence, the game is broken, wait for patch.

Anyone with a 8800 GT getting a brief screen flash every time at start up after installing either the 196.21 or 196.34 drivers? It doesn't happen with older drivers.

17. Disabled Catalyst A.I.
18. Set the Voltage of my RAM from 1.8 to 1.9 V (as I read someone solved Win7 BlueScreen issues with it)

I don't have ATI Overdrive any more. Was it removed with 10.1? How can i activate it?

idk why but i uninstalled my gfx card hit it with the compressed air, before it was running at around 85 idle, now its at 52 idle like 62 load... i think i might have had a chunk of dust in my heatsink or fan. I hope you guys are making progress. Download pcwizard and it will show you temps etc.

In Windows 7, Start Button -> msconfig -> Boot tab -> Advanced Options -> Check "Maximum Memory" box, enter 2048 in the field below it. You'll need to reset your comp for it to take effect.

I tried this fix, but it really didn't help. Let us know if you have more luck with it.

I also tried everything, till I found the solution for my black-screen problem with ME2:

I opened the suitcase of my pc and just placed a normal room fan in front of it.
I never had a black screen again and could play for hours without problems.

It seems one the common problems, which causes the black screen , is heat.
Without the room fan, my gpu (geforce 9800 gtx+) went up to over 100 degrees celsius.

Underclocking the gpu/cpu is not needed, if you check out my "room-vent"-solution.

Good luck!

So I saw this on my Yahoo homepage. I first thought it was about our problem but its about ME2 being unplayable on some SD TVs. A problem bioware wont be fixing. This doesn't bode well for our game ending issue. videogames.yahoo.com/events/playback/playback-103/1389206

Ok i've read a good half of this thread and no one stated this yet:

I occasionally get BSOD at random time periods (10-30 minutes to hours of gameplay) it usually starts with the game freezing requiring a ctrl-alt-del action and wait for a few seconds and everything gets back to normal, after that it doesn't take long for a BSOD.

While opening the task manager i noticed that Mass Effect 2 was using 95-100% of my CPU cores, so i tested further and it seems that it does this all the time even in the menu occassionally dropping to 70-80% when i'm on the Normandy, it's weird i never had this much CPU ussage with any game before (stalker, crysis, x3 etc.) it only happens in ME and ME2.

I firmly believe that this is the culprit.

System specs:

Intel Core 2 CPU 6320 @ 1.86 GHz (2 CPUs), ~ 1.9GHz

2gb ddr2

nvidia geforce 8600gt 512 video ram

yeh about this heat theory, its false, but obviously true in some cases but im using a 4890 it runs very cool, never goes above 50 after an hour or 2 playing cod6, and i get black screen crashes in ME2 a lot, ive stopped playing before it completely kills my GPU, though recently installed fallen earth and im getting the same crashes, only a lot faster, i dont have the time or knowledge to properly research the similarities between these 2 games but if someone else did then this would obviously be common ground and a good area to look at for a possible fix

Since my first post I've tried:

Windowed borderless mode
Reinstalling
Turning off all graphic effects including physX

I still have an open EA tech support ticket (I think). Their last response:

"I am sorry for the inconvenience caused to you. This looks to be an issue involving corrupt save game files. Unfortunately, you will not be able to recover the save game. However in order to make sure that this does not happen in future, I would advise you to please remove your game save files and then start afresh. The game save files are located in the "My Documents" folder, please delete the game folder from the "My Documents" folder and then start the game again."

I think for this solution they were referring to my loss of achievements after a bsod and not the bsod issue itself. Sounds like they didn't even read my whole ticket.

This problem led me to believe that this game hasn't been fully optimized for PC's (doh...), but the reason this problem occurs might be the fact that console games are very, i mean VERY, CPU intensive, because of the lack of a good video card on the four year old hardware posing as next gen... ffs...

What i mean is that even though i don't have any slowdowns or stutter ... or any kind of lag for that matter, this game kills my CPU... i don't even believe that it has anything to do with video card drivers or GPU overheating.

Whatever Bioware have stated, that PC and console versions are developed separately, i truly believe this is just a cheap console port.

Facts:

- no mouse sensitivity options

- loading tips "press shift for power wheel !?!?!?!"

- no matter how my keys are binded the popups say to press a particular default bind which in my first playthrough led me off track

- no option to turn off tips

- MAJOR compatibility issues

- (personal annoyance) no crouch action!?!?!?!?!!?

*sigh* Lucasarts did the same with The Force Unleashed Sith Edition, but the difference is that that game didn't have any problems other than controlls.

Cheers, and Bioware you better release a 200+ mb patch to fix all this crap soon because i believe your credibility just fell below minimum with us PC users.

P.S. Look at GSC Game World (STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl, Clear Sky, Call of Pripyat) they released very buggy games (i mean game braking bugs kind of buggy) but in the first month they released a dozen patches which fixed them, plus they released an SDK so the community could attend to the issues themselves.

... cheers!

I agree, this has bad port written all over it.

I'm currently playing Clear Sky right now. And its mostly bug free and a lot of fun. So cheers on GSC for the support! and boos for Bioware.

UPDATE: after crashing on fallen earth exactly the same way as mass effect 2, i have checked my temps again through curiosity, and ive found something.. after loading the game up my temps go from 50 to a whopping 100 in a matter of seconds, this happens in both games, 100 degrees is the max temp and after im assuming is the infamous crash, so.. as to why the CPU gets so hot? i dont know.. il have to look into my cooling and try clear the heatsink out, but il try other games first to see if they have a huge temp rise but i doubt it

edit: one screw on my infamous 775 socket heatsink was loose.. 1 damn screw.. i couldnt even move the heatsink yet the temps were through the roof, reseated properly and my temps are now 40 degrees in world of warcraft, ive yet to test ME2 and fallen earth so il come back if the temps are fine and say so

edit: ok so it wasnt the temps, just crashed in fallen earth after about 20 mins and the temps were max 43 degrees.. so the temps were just an issue overall yet not the source of the real problem! back to being clueless now :(

As i stated in a similar post, i have a similar problem both in ME1 and ME2. After nonfixed mount of playing time, i get back to desktop, with a window from ATI, saying that my graphics card has been reset because it could not execute instructions from the driver. After a 1minute wait, i get to continue playing most of the times. I managed to finish ME1 in that way.

My conclusion is that the specific problem must be a programming issue. Incombatibility maybe between game, grafics drivers etc. Something that we cannot do anything about without a fix.

My PC specs:
Intel Core 2 Quad 6600
4Gbs DDR2 @ 800 Mhz
Ati 4870 512Mbs
MB Asus Stiker II (deluxe i think)

My computer came after a clean format, reinstalling winxp 64bit, fully updated drivers, direct x, ati catalyst, and windows updates. Uninstalling and installing the game from scratch didnt help.

I also know this isnt a heat issue (in my case), i clean my pc from dust every six months or so.

This is getting a bit anoying now since reinstalling Mass Effect 2 and reinstalling Mass Effect 1 other games have started crashing in the exact same way. Games like Modern Warfare and Left 4 Dead these games have never had a problem before this I mean before I got mass effect 2 I would spend like 8 hours at a time on modern warfare 2 on spec ops and multiplayer. Im beggining to thing it could be some thing the games have in common like the Direct X distro the game installs or the Visual C++ distro or some thing. I dont think the CPU is over heating on mine when it crashes because if the temperature gets that high the BIOS should set off an alarm and spin the CPU fan faster to try compensate.
