As i stated in a similar post, i have a similar problem both in ME1 and ME2. After nonfixed mount of playing time, i get back to desktop, with a window from ATI, saying that my graphics card has been reset because it could not execute instructions from the driver. After a 1minute wait, i get to continue playing most of the times. I managed to finish ME1 in that way.

My conclusion is that the specific problem must be a programming issue. Incombatibility maybe between game, grafics drivers etc. Something that we cannot do anything about without a fix.

My PC specs:
Intel Core 2 Quad 6600
4Gbs DDR2 @ 800 Mhz
Ati 4870 512Mbs
MB Asus Stiker II (deluxe i think)

My computer came after a clean format, reinstalling winxp 64bit, fully updated drivers, direct x, ati catalyst, and windows updates. Uninstalling and installing the game from scratch didnt help.

I also know this isnt a heat issue (in my case), i clean my pc from dust every six months or so.

Well as i heard it, while i was looking for the best OS update (settled with Windows 7 32-bit) , Windows XP 64-bit is bad, i mean really bad in terms of driver compatibility issues to software conflicts and all that, so in my opinion Windows XP 32-bit with Service Pack 3 is better and more stable.

 Cheers!

So its causing other games to be unstable for other people?

Did the game ship with a trojan on it?

TY for the tip though going back to a 32-bit platform is not optimal for me for various reasons.

Cheers!

i wont be going back to 32 bit.. i got vista 64 bit for the sole reason of my 2x2gb dominator 1066 kit, i wont go down just becuase the game was ported badly, i bought the game like the rest, the least the developers can do is address this issue, i didnt buy this pc to troll along playing tetris or some other 2d game!

Im having the same frinki'n problem. When i walk around the Normandy, that "interruption" occurs every 2 minutes. And the worst isn't that. Afte a couple of these "crashes", my pc just "freezes", the image freezes and i cant even do the ctrl-alt-delete thing! Everything just goes dead, per say. This is VERY frustrating. i have to reboot my pc eveytime! I have a Windows Vista Home Premium, Service pack 2, Intel® Core™2 duo CPU p8660 @2.40GHz, with 4,00 GB of RAM memory, 32 Bits operative system. I have already put the graphics low, (and it looks awsome anyway) but this problem always keeps coming! And i updated my drive already. I thought that would fix it. Nothing so far. Someone pls help. Thanks

Because other games have started to have the same crashing issues as mass effect 2 right after I installed and started playing mass effect 2 I am almost certain mass effect 2 caused this issue. In order to try fix this I have uninstalled mass effect 1 and 2 uninstalled all of my drivers etc to try clear the common software components between the games then I reinstalled my drivers and reinstalled Direct X visual C++ and my .NET stuff. Now I have been testing other games and they are still crashing under both my XP and Vista installations. I am beginning to think that what ever mass effect did when it first crashed or the repeated hard resets of my system these crashes keep causing have some how damaged my memory modules or some thing as nothing I have tried with software has worked and these crashes keep happing with other games.

ME1 and ME2 seems to be very CPU intensive, they use 100% of my cpu all the time if played in full screen. One thing i have notice, the game is a little less cpu hungry when playing in windowed mode. could drop to 60% to 98~99% but never maxed out the cpu , and it is more less cpu hungry when aero mode is disactivated but much more laggy unfortunatly.

lucky me, my rig is pretty stable so i don't experience any crash of some sort but i can't help to think those game are too much power hungry and bad ports.

C2D e8500, on Win7 x64, 4Go ddr2, 8800GT all @stock.

Hey everybody! So the new ATI drivers came out to day. I installed and guess what? I just played 3 hours with only a couple breaks and no crashes!

The new ATI drivers can be found here. game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx

Good luck Radeon users!

I installed the new drivers ... didn't help me. I've got a relatively new machine 920 / Vista / ATI 4870. Crash crash crash. Somehow I made it through to the end by playing in a window, reducing resolution and switching off options. Sigh.

By the way ... it did seem that it crashed less ... if you didn't stand in one spot and moved around a lot. No idea why that might be. (Not a tecchy).

Ok, I've been playing for a couple of hours and no crash... I've followed a few Terminus Pi steps and it seem to be working. In my case:

I haven't realy disabled Asus Aitwek (overclock) becouse it has no off option so, I tried to manually input the numbers following most of the factory specs for my CPU and GPU chips.

Then, I've disabled ATI Catalyst Overdrive and had to set my GPU fan speed to 80%, keeping the GPU under 60ºC (Since the avarage day here in Brazil is 34ºC!!!)

Still in Catalyst Control, I've manually set all the 3D options half way up, only, and tried to keep the game settings under that configuration (e.g. A-Filtering x4 in Catalyst Control, since my max is x8 and set x2 in the game config tool).

After 3 days tests, I came to a Conclusion that this is the same kind of crashing some people (like me) were experiencing with Storm of Zehir, the NWN2 expansion... all the symptoms lead to that.

You could try looking at our discussion over here: http://social.biowar...56735/2#1703784

Let's wait for a Bioware position on this!!! Bioware???

As I have just had to go through the Pain of Rebuilding my system after a major crash, here are my specs

WIN XP SP3
Gigabyte S Series GA-M57SLI-24 motherboard
2 Gigs DDR2 Ram onboard
Nvidea 7600GS with  196.21 update for XP 32bit
RealTek Audio Driver WDM_R243
ADM Athelon 6400+ 3.22 GHz processor

The Crashs do not appear to be connected to anything I can readily detect. They will happen at random during walk about on in any of the environments, thought I have noticed it does save when I go into a new system, so that's a help.

Suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you

This is the same kind of crash I've been experiencing... Since your PC specs are a bit low i cant assure you that we have the same solution but you could try to cool down your pc in any way you find. You can and use Rive Tuner for your nvidia Graphic Card (just google it and download)

Some more RAM memory could help.

Hey just completely random thought popped in to my head. Btu has everyone tried removing and dust from both their CPU heat sink and GPU?

Hmm......That's a good thought. I'll give it a whirl with the canned air (since my case is hanging open at the moment and will let you know the results

Hey guys I had a similar problem where Mass Effect 2 was crashing to desktop often while in battle; but upgrading my Graphics card drivers to ATI's Catalyst 10.3 Preview Driver http://sites.amd.com...-3-preview.aspx seemed to fix this for me.

I don't know if this will help any of you but I was crashing no matter where I was after roughly 5 min. After about 6 hours of trying different stuff (dust out the system, make sure all drivers were completely upgraded, multiple tweeks that were suggested in these forums and so forth) the one thing that seems to have finally worked for me was setting the affinity back down to a single processor.

I can't remember where i found it but this was the post:

"Changing processor affinity has fixed this for me. The problem persisted through different graphics cards and PSU. Changing graphics settings also did not effect the problem. I have a Core 2 Duo e8400 c0. The same exact behavior is in Mass Effect 1 and 2 and to fix it, open up task manageer with the game running, right click on the mass effect process, and click "Set Affinity...". Then just select one of your cores. Hope this helps some of you as I went through hours and hours of trying different things like everyone else probably has."

my set up is vista 32 bit running amd athlon 64 x2 dual core 6000+ 3.00 GHz, 4 gig ram, with dual nvidia GeForce 8500GT video cards.

I hope this helps some of you.

good health to you all

I've just begun to experience crashes in ME2 in the mission to recruit Thane. I had 5 multi-hour gameplay sessions with no issue. Then, in this level, the game would "stop working" every time I got to a certain spot. Switched to windowed mode and got a little farther, only to have it crash the entire machine when I got to the elevator.

Impulse digital version
Win 7 64
8800gt
2.13 GHz Intel Core2
4 gb RAM
quality hardware...

I guess there has been no reliable fix found for this problem then? I gave up playing Mass Effect 2 a month or two ago, because the crashes made the game not worth the hassle when there were so many other games out to play. I'll come back and check again in another few months.

Thought I'd try playing again after installing the latest nVidia patch. Still crashes after about five minutes.

Same thing happening to me, which is a shame because I wanted to play this game with higher settings than what I got on my 360.

I load properly but get a crash about every 3 minutes. Tried a variety of Nvidia drivers, and none of them changed anything. Tried running as Admin and with compatibility and nothing changed. Nothing else is running, other games work extremely well. Other EA games like Dragon Age run flawlessly....
Updating my BIOS, hope this will help.

Don't know how i missed this thread. I'm having the same issues. I wanted to be able to use some of the PC character creation mods that aren't available on 360. I think it's something with UE3 and Windows 7. All of my games that don't use UE3 run fine, all of my games that do use UE3 have problems.
