This is getting ridiculous.

Watch my screenshot: Image IPB
(It looks a lot worse on my PC - a lot more artifacts and stretched textures etc.)

The game is virtually unplayable for me.

I'm generally experiencing three problems.

1) Usually during cut-scenes the game will freeze and the audio will in some cases continue.
1a) The game crashes the ATI and it says it has recovered from something and my screen will refresh.
1b) It never recovers and I have to force reboot.

2) I get visual artifacts that only go away if 1) occurs or if I reboot the computer.

3) I'll get a freeze like in 1) but the audio will stutter and I have to force reboot.

I started with Catalyst 9.12 then 10.1 - made no difference.

I've never had any problems with my GF before.

Asus ATI 4870
Intel 2 Quad Q9450

Running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

People speculated that an overheating GPU could cause some of the problems, but even if I force my fan to 70-100% and the temperature drops from 70+ to 50-60 degrees Celsius nothing changes.

...I played ME on 360 and considered getting ME2 for my PS3, but didn't because I hate using ps3/360 controllers. I'm really unhappy this game is running so crappy for so many people.

Has any of you experienced the same crash in other games (after the crash started happening in ME2)?

Try to run the game in Windowed mode, what driver crashes exactly?

yes i have in ME1 i have no idea why its me1 and 2 but those are the only games ive ever had a crash in that actually made my PC power completely down on its own. im thinking somthing in these games is causing my PC to over heat or maybe drawing too much power and my powersupply cant handle it.

although that dosent explain why running windowed fixes the problem

Did the ME1 crashes start before you got ME2?

I'm more interested in crashes from other games that started occouring after occouring ME2 crashes.

Im running Vista ultimate 64bit with an AMD 6400+ X2 4Gb ram and an ATI 4870 (512mb)
I managed to play the game till omega then after i reached that doctors office the game keeps locking up and making that looping stuttering sound then the game blue screens vista. since the doctors office this keeps happening every few minutes. I tried installing the Direct X from the game disc ive tried changing my audio and video drivers and ive unistalled and reinstalled the game on a different hard drive and it keeps crashing. Ive also tried disabling my anti virus and firewall, disabled the user account control.

I have played Mass Effect 1 through to compleation on this same rig without problems.

Running it in windowed mode works for me atleast, though I would still want a fix, becouse god knows how long it'll last

And I was right, it just crashed when I ran windowed mode in borderless.  Barely was able to reboot my computer afterwards with loud alarm noises and what not

EDIT: Why hasnt bioware responded to this issue yet? O.o Crashing the entire computer isnt big deal enough? <.<

Check other games plz - do they crash as well?

Run the component performance test:
  • Control Panel > Performance Information and Tools
  • Click on "Update my Score"
  • The system will run a series of tests, including DirectX tests and other GPU checks
Does the driver crash at any point during those tests?

I havent had this problem with any other games on vista ive also just tried running the game in borderless windowed mode with no success.

I just tried running the performance test with no problems and it scored a 5.9 on all areas except calculations per seccond where it scored 5.5.

At this point im going to try running the game under XP pro and see what happens.

(EDIT: Ive since tried it under XP and i got it to run for about 30minutes to an hour before i got the exact same crash which is pretty much how long it lasted when i first installed it on my vista install so im expecting it to crash more frequently on XP now -_-)

Hello all, not sure if this is the correct place to post this but I'm having crashing issues as well.  First off, it is not happening every 5 minutes for me.  I think the crash is a display driver issue.  I have the latest directx and nvidia drivers.  I also have updated my performance score in Windows without any issues.
  • What happens: I'll get a black screen and the sound will stutter.  Stuttering does not always occur immediately.  After a few seconds my screen will then say "no signal" and I am forced to do a hard reset.  Windows has actually managed to recover from this type of crash ONCE when it happened to me in ME1.  See last bullet point for details about ME1 crashes.
  • Crashing on Omega in the beginning of the game.  The crash occurs as I run up to Zaeed at the entrance.  This has happened multiple times on two different playthroughs.  Reinstalled the DLC and got it past it (but I got through it the first playthrough without reinstalling the DLC).  There was another part somewhere in the middle of the game that also caused crashes but I can't seem to remember :pinched:.
  • Losing Achievements.  In my first playthrough this actually didn't happen until after I had experienced a few crashes.  In my second playthrough which I just started, it happened after my first crash.  What happens is after recovering from a crash I'll restart my computer, start ME2, and at the main menu it asks me to log into Cerberus Network again.  This is where I notice that ALL my achievements have been lost.  This has happened to me twice.
  • Crashing issues in other games.  I have experienced these issues a lot in ME1 (one instance was during the Saren resurrection cutscene) and a few times in Dragon Age.  Actually I refuse to replay Dragon Age again because I got so frustrated with the memory leak issue (but that's for a different forum).  I am beginning to lose faith in Bioware/EA.
Brief System Specs:
  • 32-bit Vista Home Premium SP2
  • AMD Phenom 9500 Quad Core 2.21GHZ
  • 4GB RAM
    BFG 512MB GeForce 8800 GT OC2
I have emailed EA as well and am waiting for a response.  Let me know if you need more details.  I hope this post helps others with similar issues.

EDIT: I noticed that I sometimes get a crash to desktop when rearranging my skill hot key bar.

UPDATE:

I experienced my first crash during combat last night (first combat situation during Jacob loyalty mission).  I have problems with the end of Grunt's loyalty mission too.  After talking to the shaman the game has crashed multiple times for two different playthroughs.  I was running the game in borderless windowed mode as well so I guess this doesn't prevent the crashes for me.  Also, it's been 3 business days since I filled out an EA tech support form and I still haven't heard from them.

Having started the game today, I'm also averaging a crash every five minutes. This is despite installing latest nVidia drivers, trying both full screen and windowed modes, different resolutions, etc. I have made some progress thanks to quick saves, but the crashing persistently arises after a few minutes, turning the display black and locking up my PC.

I'm running Windows XP SP3, on an AMD Athlon 4200, with 2GB RAM and a GeForce 9600 GT with 512 RAM.

Coincidentally (or perhaps not), I had similar problems during parts of 'Dragon Age', but at its worst, the crashes in that game only came every 20 minutes, which was a bit more tolerable.

I've had only few complete crashes so far...but after 5-10 minutes it always gets incredibly slow. CPU Usage shoots up to 90-98%, the game starts to lag painfully. Before that it usually runs smoothly. I've run it in full screen and windowed mode, on different resolutions, on high graphic settings and on minimum settings. Going to window mode helped a little, but after 15-20 minutes the same thing started all over again.

my laptop:
Processor Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU T6400 @ 2.00GHz
Physical Memory 2,99 GB
NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT 512 MB
Driver Version 195.62
OS Windows XP SP3
Direct X from the ME2 DVD installed

Also I might add that not even restarting the game always gets it back to normal speeds, it will simply start laggy right from the main menu.
I've got Zaeed, Normandy Crash Site and the Inferno Suit installed as add-ons

Crashing at multiple spots myself, its not the spot, because I will get past it no problem if I reboot, and then I'll freeze at a new one.

Froze while trying to rescue the normandy pilot.

Froze while hacking twice

Froze while shooting a mech in the first mission.

GT 8800's SLIed

XP (fully updated)

I had a similar problem in dragon age, which was cured by turning off forced stereo on my headphones, no such setting with ME2.

Hey guys,I already posted in a few other threads. But I figure the more noise we make the more likely some one from EA (ha ha fat chance) or Bioware is to notice our problem and work on getting it resolved. I can't play for more then 10minutes.

My specs are

AMD 64 X2 2.8GHZ

Radeon 5770

Windows 7 64

Both CPU temp and GPU temp are with in their normal range.

There I was just happily meandering around collecting metals for the upgrades, going along fine, then I pick up this encrypted cerberus transmission, so launch probe, click land, bit of loading and MassEffect2.exe has stopped working. Great. Now not so happy.

I am also having this problem. I do have the minimum requirements for this game and I had some crashes in Dragon Age(mostly in the cinematics).

I previously had the crash that occurs during the loading screen but I fixed that by turning off the .bik

Now I get the crashes ever 5 mins or so. My 3 most recent ones were just after I killed the mech with Archangel where I was forced to restart. Then the other 2 were after I used my pull ability then shot at the enemy. This doesn't happen all the time when I use pull/shoot but I noticed that what was in common with those two.

I have also random crashes with my 9600GT in a Samsung r560 notebook.

Sometimes the game freezes, sometimes it drops to a really low framerate (usually it's very smooth, better than ME1!) frequency: maybe once per hour f gameplay

happens usually during intense fights, and I have some feeling it is related to using the pause function and issuing squad commands.

Have to look more carefully what's causing them...
