same here - it either crashes back to desktop or it crashes on the loading screen with the rotating mass relay.

Try playing other games.

The drivers are up to date and I got the same problem with some other games, but if i lower the resolution and other stuff i can play for long hours, but ME2 is unplayable.

Its not heat problem

When you have problems with other games, then it seems that there is also something wrong with your configuration. You should be able to play other games in a correct way. I also have problems with Mass Effect 2 but playing DA:O with max. settings causes no problems for me. And many other users have the same problem like me. Every other game works fine except Mass Effect 2. Check your RAM and make sure that the rest of your system works fine by using different diagnostic tools.

MEMTest runs fine here, no errors found, i've played prince of persia(2008) with no problems running on max and SFIV too. DA:O crashed 2-3 times(on orzamar) but I could finish it.

And sorry for my bad english

I tried underclocking my GF heavily and setting the fan at a constant 35% - it solved everything.

I'm running an ATI 4870 and i've NEVER had any GF issues with any of my previous games. With ME2 I had artifacts, random crashes and my display driver failing on me. I don't know why I tried underclocking it, but someone in the thread wrote about it and I gave it a shot. I really got tired of my system locking up so often.

I still doubt it's an issue with my GF!

How many percent did you change the values for your card? I am using still the recommended values from ATI for my 4890. Any bad effects until now (temperature, crashes)??

I was running 815 / 925 MHz (GPU/Memory) and I turned it down to 700/800. The fan would run around 20-30 so I changed it to a permanent 35% when I played.

Before I would run 70+ degrees now i'm closer to 60-65 when i'm running with everything max and underclocked.

i dont believe underclocking is a solution for this, a wide variety of systems is having problems with it, its the game, it needs a patch, those of you that can play fine you are LUCKY, ive tried updating bios, resetting cmos, downgrading graphics drivers, hotfix drivers, etc, everything i could think of, its not a heat issue, this used to happen with my old 8800gt in a different board, but that took days to crash, not seconds..

im on the tali rescue mission, quite a way in near the 2nd voice message, my save is there < anyway i come out and kill off the 2 groups then boom CRASH, i cant get past this point, and i cant return to normandy to play another area, ME2 = UNPLAYABLE!!

my card is xfx 4890 anyhow

So I have two Radeon 4890's Crossfired and a dual monitor setup.

I have an Intel Core i7 so I think I'm good on that single core CPU problem I've been seeing.

The issue is, I'm also getting the crash/freeze computer force manual shutdown every five minutes problem.

At first, the game would consistently crash on the same spot right before the end of the cutscene starting the Freedom's Hope mission. I read up that Mass Effect 2 dislikes dual-monitor setups so I disabled one of the monitors and voila... I got past that point. (one thing of note is that when I disable the monitor Catalyst appears to be telling me that it's only reading one GPU... does it assign one to each monitor meaning I can't truly Crossfire unless I have one monitor or...?)

Then, five minutes later, (in the middle of a different cutscene) it crashed.

So I read up that maybe the cinematic lights and anisotropic filtering were the problem and setting lights below three with filtering below 8x would work. In that same try, I also read that some people thought that maybe it was a heat issue (which I was didn't think it was but why not try it?), so I manually set my GPU fan to 65% and during the five minutes of gameplay that followed I noted the temperature was around 50-60C.

As you can guess... it crashed (during the next cinematic five minutes in).

My next try might be something along the lines of parking my characters for five minutes and seeing what happens... but I'm not so sure that I want to risk forcing another shutdown. Another point to note is that since I can only run one screen to play the game, I can't exactly check the GPU temperatures during cutscenes.

I also have the Antialiasing problem and installed the Hotfix for it... which did not work (though it did fully update my video drivers).

Any more ideas or should I just do what I don't feel like doing and get back to work whilst waiting for a patch?

So yeah, here's one more guy suffering.
(Signed up just because of this thread, lol.)

This may sound a bit strange, but I'm RELIEVED those perverted crashes actually come from the game - I was already biting my nails, afraid my hardware would just break down on me every second.
Because, as some of you mentioned, that goes further than just a standard crash a game produces. The way it happens for me:

1. screen freezes (sometimes with artifacts and pixels goin' nuts on my screen, building crazy structures)
2. sound scratches/loops incredibly annoying
3. computer locks up completely
4. computer restarts itself after some time, usually 2-30 seconds.

I mean: HOLY COW! First time this happened, I was already counting bills, see if I could afford a new rig. It's such a messed up way to kill a system!
Only accurate observation: For me, it just happens when the engine really has to do some work. That's either in very large places like huge rooms filled with effects, or when there are lots of people on the screen. I won't spoiler, but some of you might know some areas where this takes place. If you were fortunate enough to make it this far. :(
But it's sporadic! One day I had two crashes in only a matter of hours, yesterday however I was able to play for 5 hours straight without a single crash. I thought the updated NVidia drivers would've really fixed something, but then, just a few minutes ago: huge crash. Frustrating as hell.

But let's get constructive for a second. First, specs:

Q6600 @ 3,2 GhZ
8800 GT
6 GB Ram
Vista Home Premium x64
Mass Effect 2 Digital Deluxe Edition (Steam)

Having read through the whole thread, it seems this happens to all kinds of systems, doesn't matter whether NVidia or ATI, Intel or AMD.
And yeah, drivers are up-to-date, system runs fine. To be honest I've never had a system that actually worked this smooth, never had any serious problems for the last 2 years. Even though Vista's in charge. Programmes and games, whether old or brand-new, do their job outstandingly. So it was kind of surprising, seeing it gasping for breath with ME2. This is - and I'm pretty sure about that - not a hardware issue.
So many people, so many systems, all experiencing the same exact problem.
I'm afraid this whole thing really messes with my hardware components one day - so, until there's a solution or a patch (!), I guess I won't touch Mass Effect 2. As hard as this will be.

Has any of you experienced the same crash in other games (after the crash started happening in ME2)?

Try to run the game in Windowed mode, what driver crashes exactly?

yes i have in ME1 i have no idea why its me1 and 2 but those are the only games ive ever had a crash in that actually made my PC power completely down on its own. im thinking somthing in these games is causing my PC to over heat or maybe drawing too much power and my powersupply cant handle it.

although that dosent explain why running windowed fixes the problem

Did the ME1 crashes start before you got ME2?

I'm more interested in crashes from other games that started occouring after occouring ME2 crashes.

I hate to tell you this but your GPU is about to go bust. This happened to me. I have lost my GPUs as a result of this game but due to my warranty, I can replace them at no cost. If you see these green and red thingy's it is bad.

I would like to say, I love how Bioware is completely silent on this. Not even a "Hey Guys, we know about the problem, and we're trying to find a solution".

Newest Update:

Electronic Arts/BioWare & AMD(ATI) are working on the first PATCH for Mass Effect 2!!

Also a new Nvidia SLI update is available for Mass Effect 2. To use this update you need the Nvidia driver 196.21 WHQL.

Enclosed you find the link for it:

Here's my specs haven't had a single crash. 5000+AMD dual core, 2gb ddr2 800mhz, Sapphire/Radeon HD3450 card with 512 ddr2 160gb hd, with Windows 7. Game is smooth no stuttering anywhere. The only thing I am having a problem with is the Comm room door won't open no matter which way I enter the hall from or what I try.

We read these threads, however...

1) it's primarily self-help

2) is it possible to provide commonality between the reported crashes on this thread? we can only investigate issues which dont appear (on the surface) to be limited to specific machines or specific hardware configurations. if an issue affects a large number of machines (due to an apparent problem) - we can (and will) look into it. in short, if the crashes are occuring at seemingly random times for different people on different hardware configurations - we have no specific place to start investigating.

That is so not true.

They have been aware of this for some time, and have been able to repro the issue on single cores, it's just a matter of finding repro steps and the common issue for anyone else who is experiencing this - and has a multi core system.

I can understand BioWare's position, and I can understand the frustration on the user side (as I am one of them - who's having issues with this) - but pointless bashing and flaming won't help the issue at hand.

We need to find a common nominator here.

I'm also experiencing these crashes.

However in my case it only started to occur when I ventured into Omega. And more specifically still, the mission section revolving around Archangel. I simply hopped on the merc transport to the mission area, and after the first conversation with the Logistics Officer there I can't go on for more than 1 minute without it crashing...

And what a crash! The screen freezes, sound loops and a honey comb of artifacts appear all over the screen. It looks for all the world like a GPU overheat, but unless the card is spiking horrendously for a brief second and frying itself then there's no other indication of that occurring.

I'm just about to hop into Dragon Age: Origins while frantically biting my nails to see if there're any obvious signs of damage. This has never happened before with ANY other game and quite a bit of heavy use.

It might also help to say my system specs are:

Windows XP Home SP 3 (up to date)

4 gigs of ram

On board sound SoundMax (up to date)

Nvidia 8800GTX (up to date)

AMD Phenom 2 X4 940

I can run pretty much everything on the market on max settings, but this one utterly baffles me :)
