The engine Mass Effect 2 uses can have problems dealing with more than 1 core. So if you, like me, experience real slow load times you can try running the game on just 1 core. Here's how to do it:

1. Start the game and let it load to the main menu.
2. Alt-tab to the desktop.
3. Right-click on the taskbar and start the task manager.
4. Switch to the processes tab.
5. Right-click on MassEffect2.exe and select Set Affinity.
6. De-select all but CPU 0 and press OK.
7. Alt-tab back to the game and enjoy a much smoother experience.

Now, you have to do this every time you start Mass Effect 2 because it resets every time you exit the game.

Bump, nice find.

Somehow only the Normandy was slow for me, but it was really slow. So thanks for the heads up, I appreciate it.

You're welcome. Took me long enough to figure something had to be wrong for it to load so slowly that I searched for a solution online and found this, and it helped lots, now it's smoth sailing. :D

I'm gonna bump this for those of you who missed it. :) It's well worth a try if you have more than 1 core and think it loads slower than it should. Personally I cut my load times in half.

It worked for me, brought by load times down from ~30 sec + to 5-10 sec!!! However since I have been doing that my game has started having random lockups and crashes.

Strange that you get lockups and crashes, it hasn't happened for me. Do you think it's related or just a coincidence?

Guys, pending your processor and operating system you may need to get a patch. Check the website of your processor provider for patches that apply to multicore processors and your OS. Give that a shot.

dunno, but it only started happening after I disabled 1 core.

Is this meant for people with quad core? As my dual core runs the game seamlessly.

I'm on a Dual Core, AMD 64 X2 and it really really speed up my game.

I have an intel E8500 and the game loads slooooow as molasses unless I disable 1 core.

Ok I confirmed it this afternoon disabling one of my cores on my E8500 causes the game to crash randomly and everything I access the weapon or armor selection screen. Bioware please fix the multi core issue!!!

this should be sticked until a proper ME2 patch is available. BW devs sticky this.

it is an unreal engine bug, I doubt bioware could fix it even if they wanted to.

epic needs to fix it I guess.

I was skeptical until I tried it, cut my 30-45 second load times in Normandy down to 5 or less!

Does it cause crashes for everyone?

I'm pretty sick of the INSANELY long load times. It actually affects my gameplay. I talk to my crew less because I don't want to deal with the insane load times.

I rarely even tweak my armor because the extra two trips on the elevator are too brutal.

Disabling a core is bad.

What about disabling it, then re-enabling it?

My load times are still kinda annoying, but doing this has cut them by about 75% thank god.

This load time issue is severe.

This method worked for me as well. Cut down 60+ second load times to under 10. Any word on a patch for this?

Once you have disabled the core and pressed okay, re enable it immediately.

The load time will be fixed but you will still have the performance of 2 cores.

I got this from another thread on the forum.

This effects so many people it is bullsh!t that it has not been fixed two patches down the road.

Poor show indeed.

I had the same result as starfighter, game does load better with only 1 core, but I also get the "Mass effect has stopped responding" crash.

 hmm. Tried this AND the "MassAffinity thing and found both give minimal differences on my comp.
I am running WinVista/32 E6600 Core2Duo with NVidia G250s GPU and 4GB RAM

Better solution? YES!

1. Load/Start Game
2. Ctrl + alt + del
3. "Start Task Manager"
4. Click Processes" tab
5. Scroll to "MassEffect2.exe"
5. Right Click "MassEffect2.exe"
6. Find and Set Priority to High (just below "Realtime")

Voila! :D

Super-go-faster loadtimes!
