This review is pretty much spoiler free, I do not wish to ruin anyone else's experience with the game nor do I wish to press on my views of the game on anyone else.
This is strictly how I feel, what I would like to see change or be reworked for ME3 and is in no small part what have made Bioware's games so good over the years.
I have been a gamer since the mid 90's, Adventure games, RPG's and MMORPG's are typically the stuff im interested in, I do play other genre's aswell but nothing beats a good game with a great storyline.
I have also been a game tester for various titles, both Online and Offline games, so I am not completely new to this whole scene.
With that, here's what I have to say
The Game.
I have now completed Mass Effect 2 three times, two of my characters whom I got to lvl 30 on my first playthrough, the last around 25.
The gameplay has definately improved from the first, and it's easy to see Bioware made changes which the community asked for, and changes which would
have been usefull in the first Mass Effect, with that said there are also some things in ME2 which does not work as well as intended.
Story.
One of the things which attracts me so much about Bioware is their story telling, I see their games as a cinematic experience, I get the urge to go deep and
feel like im part of the story, just as I would with a good book or a good movie.
The start of ME2 is epic, and I really enjoy it, however there's no way of skipping it, which means you have to sit through it everytime, if I dont like the look
of my character I have to replay the entire thing everytime, which does get a tad annoying.
I have always been a sucker for cutscenes, and Mass Effect 2 does not lack in that at all, the new improved system where you can interrupt by renegade or
paragon actions is really great, and it add's alot to the already cinematic feel which I am in control of.
Most of us know the story of ME1, and now ME2, and while it has some similarities with some movies or books it's definately something which you just want to
see how it ends, so ME3 can't come quick enough.
ME2 was a bit liniar, get your crew members loyalty, not alot of side missions, and basicly you knew where to go all the time.
However the various characters stories were great, some better than others, and you do get a feel of attachment to the crew you gather.
Gameplay.
You can really see that ME2 is more of a shooter than an RPG, it's not all bad, but there are some things which I miss from ME1 or Dragon Age for that matter.
The inventory system is something I missed, the hide helmet option, Expressions on the characters plays a big role in ME2 and was one of the selling points.
Which means that I was forced to wear something which showed my face through the entire game, this meant no Collectors or Pre-order armor, Blood Dragon armor,
Recon Hood etc for me, and it didnt matter which class I was, Dragon Age did it good by automaticly hiding helms when you were talking, and I was actually
a little sad to see that it was changed this way.
I enjoyed the customization of the armor though, but again, the inventory / item system in ME1 was superior, with more armor to choose from, more weapons and
more options.
I did enjoy the new way you navigate in space, however, the probe minigame does get old pretty fast, even with upgrades it's still slow going and get's boring
after mining 200.000+ minerals per playthrough, I would love to see something more fun for ME3 for this.
Fuel also makes sense but is a tad annoying, you have to constantly fly back to refuel before you actually get to explore the entire system you are in.
Basicly in ME3 I would like a more open game, more side missions, a little more exploration of the various places, the citadel for example felt very small
compared to ME1, Omega felt a bit small aswell, but with that said, the places felt more alive than in ME1 and the atmosphere of the places was great.
Powers / Weapons.
I liked the fact that ME2 offered various unique powers for each member/player class, it add's a small way of playing in different ways everytime you start a new
game, I was hoping for more powers though, and like I wrote earlier, more weapons.
Graphics.
Only a few graphical glitches, like camera angle going through NPCs / PCs or characters warping in places when going to a dialoque or cutscene, but all in all
a big upgrade from ME1, no texture pop in and some really great looking places to explore.
Additional Things.
There's a great deal of humor in the game, and also some very serious moments, minor spoiler incoming
*******if you bring Legion on the flotilla, now that's just priceless********
The voice acting is great, I enjoy listening to some of my favorite actors/actresses throwing off lines in ME2, yes im a huge Chuck fan so Adam Baldwin and Yvonne
Strahovski are superb !
Adding in the other big names who's chipping in their voice over for ME2 is just great, sometimes I didnt even notice it was the people talking due to the fact
I was so into the whole story that I didnt realize it before after I finished the scene/dialoque.
What im about to say now, may actually get some people to flame me, but I have to say it !
The romantic scene's could have been done a little more like ME1, I dont think they were that great in ME2, they were done quickly and nothing special, even
my girlfriend (yes I have one) whom I showed ME1's romantic scene's too aswell said the same thing.
Although some of them was pretty fun to watch, Tali for example was a great scene, but it felt more like a standard scene, not what the characters sort of
build's up through the game like in the first one.
There are of course alot more I can say about the game, but I do not wish to make this post longer than I have too.
I would like to finish off by saying thanks to Bioware for another great game though, even with the lacks and the new things which I didnt enjoy quite as much
the game delivers, and I definately look forward to the 3rd one.
I will include a small list in the bottom for what I would like to see in the 3rd, changes or reworks.
Minerals and Probes: I would like to see something more fun in ME3, something a little less painful, it gets boring really fast.
Open World less Liniar: While it's hard to not make something feel liniar, there are ways to make it less bumpy, adding in alot more side missions, could be missions you find yourself, via mails, or more missions from your companions.
More worlds to explore: we have the cities but they are all tied in with the main plot mainly, some more worlds/cities which doesnt tie in to the main plot would be welcome, adding some missions in those places etc, for example, visiting the Sol System, I would have loved to land on Mars and see the site where the Prothean artifact
was discovered, or visit earth, maybe the N7 academy, stuff like that, make it more open.
Inventory System: The new way works, but it kinda does take away from the whole RPG experience, combine ME1 with ME2 adding inventory + customization would definately be something I would wish to see.
Bathrooms: come on, adding bathrooms you could add the ability to change your hair/facial hair in the mirror atleast
Powers: more powers would be welcome, or atleast some crossovers, while I do enjoy there's a character for each thing pretty much, I would love to see more customization
with your powersets.
Opening Epic Scene: Ability to skip, either after you have seen it one time, or just from the get go, this would help people who wishes to have their characters look perfect from the start.
Imported Characters: While it's awesome you can import your character from ME1, there's something here which annoyed me a bit, I would have loved an option to recustomize my character from ME1, not start from scratch but just click on my imported char, and adjust/tweak a few things with their faces, as it was now, it was either import, or complete customization.
Finally, I am awaiting Bioware's next game, will be fun to see if TOR will be the next game released, or ME3, either way I will be ready and able..
Again thank you Bioware for another great game, and keep up the good work.
