However, if you refuse Leliana the first time, when she asks again later, he's fairly enthusiastic about her joining your party.

I think his issue is with companions who might end up killing one or both of you, i.e. Shale and Zevran, and though he voices his templar instincts with Morrigan you get no approval loss for taking her along.

He tries to convince you to take Leliana, at least if you refuse her at first. No issue with Oghren.

They could not ad approval loss at Morrigan or Oghren joining, as the game forces those onto you.
And though he might not loose approval when Leli joins, his remark still is "More crazy? I thought we were all full" or soemthing like that.

With the exception of Leliana, everyone objects to Zevran, and only Oghren seems to approve of Shale.

If you tell her no in the tavern, you run into her again on the way out of Lothering. At that point, he wants her to join and (potentially) delivers one of his funniest lines of the game.

I'll definitly try that in my next playthrough!

As for Morrigan not wanting people to join, I barely had her in the party while recruiting party members.

that and whenever you try to do anything 'friendly', even if it serves a purpose, she complains.Siradix wrote...
I never tried to refuse Leliana, I'll try that next time. As for Wynne and Oghren I can't recall Alistair saying anything about them when they joined. However, talking to Alistair in camp he seems not to like Oghren because of his drinking habits

funny how nobody makes a "morrigan is a whiner" thread like the alistair ones

She does seem to openly object to anything good. Like when you break up the arguement between the merchant and the Chantry sister. "So are we going to fix all these squables. Oh but the darkspawn will be pleased" Sometimes I get tired of her constant complaining.

And yes, Alistair only objects to those party members he sees as potentially dangerous i.e. the assassin who just tried to kill you or the big stone golem who apparently did kill its former master. I think he's just being protective and cautious, not that he doesn't want you to make friends.

I like Alistair and always act buddy-buddy with him, even when I promted with the choice to harden him. I think more people just expect Morrigan to hate any good deed and when it comes up it doesn't phase them.

tell Alistair that she's "One archdemon short of a Blight" - the line

lol I thought that line would have drove her off.
Isn't the majority of your party potentially dangerous?

I would love to see his rebuttal if you are able to point out how he is envious of Oghren.

The annimosity adds quite a bit of flavor to the dialogue at times.
I don't mind losing a few points of influence, those lost points are usually made up easily, even without gifts. Contention in the ranks is well worth the minor loss of influence with any of the companions.

As far as Oghren's drinking goes, Alistair does admit in one point of the game he wishes he could be drunk all the time and how it's not fair.

It's not that Alistair doesn't want you to make friends, he's just playing it safe and slightly disapproves if Zevran or Shale join because of the higher potential of danger from them. And approval is easily reattained and not lost forever.

Alistair can more than slightly disapprove of Zevran. Try telling him to shut up and follow directions. And approval has its limits. I have a game that I haven't finished that had Alistair at -100. I don't think I'll even get him up to neutral in it. I should play it through just to see if certain persuade checks work if extremely low approval.

Are there multiple gifts of the same item? If so, perhaps the dulplcation glitch could save him.

The real reason he storms off in a huff if you spare Loghain? He's a threat to Alistair's status as the PC's Grey Warden BFF.

There's a conversation they have where Ogrhen's wasted and still upright and fighting well and Alistair comments on it. Alistair finishes the conversation by saying, "Why can't I be the one to fight drunk?"

lol It has to be that; you are able to convince him to let everyone else join your group, but as soon as one of them is a Grey Warden out he goes. The blight is insignificant when your BFF status is at stake.

There is a way to get Zevran without losing approval if I recall.
