If you want the line for Leliana, tell Alistair that she's "One archdemon short of a Blight" - the line that follows is hilarious!

And yes, Alistair only objects to those party members he sees as potentially dangerous i.e. the assassin who just tried to kill you or the big stone golem who apparently did kill its former master. I think he's just being protective and cautious, not that he doesn't want you to make friends.

There is a way to get Zevran without losing approval if I recall.

I think you have to do the whole song and dance where you try to send Zevran off after Loghain, but he refuses.

Uh... I think Alistair hates Loghain because Loghain was the one who betrayed the King Calain, ditched the Battle of Ostagar, left the King and Duncan along with anyone else to die in agony, and falsely blamed and accused the Gray Wardens for treason.

I think BFF status has little to do with it, but maybe deep down inside... Alistair feels that way. ;(

I still lost approval with Alistair even after asking Zev to shank Loghain. Lost points with Morrigan too. I didn't think there was a way to get approval with either one of them concerning Zev.

ozsras - I thought you could persuade Alistair to allow Zevran to join without losing any points.

7th_Phoenix - I think that because Alistair views Duncan as a father figure; it's what drives him to loath Loghain so much. The fact that they are falsely accused just adds to the problem.

Then there is Loghain stealing his BFF, that's the straw that broke the camel's back and made him storm off. :P

I could be wrong, but I don't think I lost approval with Alistair when I added Zevran--I used the coercion option (can't recall the actual dialogue) and was successful. I don't recall him making any objection to Oghren, either; if he did, it was pretty minor and he seems to be getting along okay with Oghren now. Maybe it depends partly on his feelings toward you at the time.

Anyway, seriously...isn't taking someone who has tried to kill you on as a hechman kind of a questionable decision (a factor with both Loghain and Zevran)? And he's way less of a problem with Morrigan than Wynne is. Actually, I love having them in the same party, they're hilarious.

How do you access the approval score? I've looked and looked.

If you open up your Inventory, there should be a bar at the bottom under each character. Yours shows XP but for your party members, it shows approval rating.

On the 360, the approval rating is on the bottom of the inventory screen at the foot of the characters, the XP slide is to the left. The bottom of the PC's inventory screen is blank.

There is a way to not lose approval with Alistair n u have Zev join you, leave him in camp after the cutscene where's Zev's hired... Zev will show up the next time you travel somewhere lol... Thats what I always do...

N btw when you have a conversation with Alistair n he asks your opinion of the other companions, thats Alistairs way of putting out testers so to speak on how his opinion of the other companions are... if you praise Sten so does Alistair, if you downgrade Zev n Morrigan so does Alistair... Whats interestin is he never asks about how you feel about Wynne n I think Shales not mentioned either when he asks you... You can already see that he respects Wynne so he doesn't need or want your approval/disapproval but the other companions he's looking at how you view them.

There is.  After he refuses to kill Loghain, ask him if he wants to live instead of telling him you accept his proposal.  It may be a dialog bug as you don't gain or lose approval from anyone.

I learn something new everyday. You can try to send Zev after Loghain when you first meet him? Really? What dialogue option do you pick?

Hmm...I don't know if I see it like this.

He will argue with you about the characters, so he has his own opinions. He doesn't change them simply because you think differently, but he's willing to consider other options. Like for Zevran. If you say you're willing to give him a chance, Alistair will go along with you, but say he'll be watching the assassin closely. In the discussion about Morrigan, you might not get any actual disapproval if you say you like her, but it's obvious he doesn't agree. If you say Leliana is crazy, he'll flat out say he wouldn't be so quick to dismiss her claims. Etc.

I think he honestly wants to know what you think, and he's not discounting your opinion outright if it differs from his own. It's a mature approach, I think.

Refuse to spare him.  Then go through the dialogs there, then ask him if he wants to live.

He doesn't have to always agree. I think it's great the NPCs will actually disagree with you at certain points.

Aha! I've never done that. Next playthrough!

And thanks :)

Oh, some of the BEST dialogs come from a certain companion who has strong feelings about everything and won't shut up about them when he's trying to change your mind.  I agree that it's fantastic that you not only have companions who disagree with you, but who disagree with each other so if they're both with you, you'll make one of them mad while making the other happy.

I've done the coercion and the kill Loghain option and I *think* I've done the entire dialogue tree. I still get -3 from Alistair (with the coercion check) and -3 with Morrigan. I gained approval with Leliana for saving Zev. With Wynne, Sten and Dog there was no disapproval or approval. However, Oghren will disapprove -5 I think.

I don't know about Shale, I can't remember if I have ever had her in my party during that situation.

Throw Zevran, Morrigan, and Wynne in your party and your travels will never be boring.:D

Well, considering that most of the guys you try to befriend are either murderers or lunatics he has every right not to approve them at first.

That's right. I went through that convo about dozen times when I first met Zev (love on the first fight, that one was;) and when the last thing you say is "Do you want to live or not?", Zev a bit hesitantly admits that he does want to live, and you don't loose approval points from anybody. It's probably a bug. But I like to think that with the question worded that way, Alistair and other 'good' companions realize that the alternative would be cutting a defenceless prisoner's throat, and can't really blame you for not wanting to do that. As for Morrigan, she might be too amused by that hesitant "Yes? ... Yes, I do," to be really irritated with you. :P

Heh, considering that until that moment he wanted to die, I'm sure that his saying he did want to live was a huge surprise for him.

Actually, I really like your spin on that.  I assumed it was a dialog bug, but you're most likely correct.

This is one of the reasons I hate Alistair. He thinks he is better than everyone else. He is only friendly and polite to those who he considers on equal station. You better be human and have some title before your actual name if you want him to respect you as an equal.

There's a persuade option that can spare you the hit on Influence. Though Alistair will still end with the crack, "I think this proves that we're desperate," or something along those lines. Morrigan's -3 is interesting, since it 'seems' like she approves and then you get the hit. And the approval isn't in her snarky, "Oh what a great idea," voice.

Technically unless your character is a little out of his gourd himself, he really shouldn't be encouraging the woman hearing voices, the confessed child killer, the assassin who tried to kill him or the large golem with no control rod that killed its former master to follow him. It's a game so you know things are going to work out well, but those people seriously don't make a good first impression.
