Retrieving IFF

So, I've already had the chat with the Illusive Man about getting the IFF, and told him I'd like some time to build my crew. I have only one left to recruit, in addition to alot of scanning and side missions. I was just wondering if i can still explore freely after retrieving the IFF (to finish of loyalty missions etc.)? Or will I be forced through the Omega 4 right after, similar to the collector ship investagation? I'm still on my first playthrough, so I'd greatly appreciate it if spoilers could be avoided in responses.

Can anyone verify this? just so I don't have to go through it all only to reload an older save if I get screwed over

Are you sure about that? After you do the IFF mission, there is a timed event that happens that forces you to either hurry thru the Omega 4 relay or sacrifice something.

It's best to leave the IFF until you've done everything else; you'll pick up a new squadmember there, and if you subsequently do anything other than his loyalty mission you may end up losing some of the NPCs. If you don't care about rescuing Kelly, Chakwas, or the other assorted folk then you can pretty much hang around as much as you like after the IFF, though...

Wait so you can do the loyalty mission and not worry about Kelly. I'm also waiting on the IFF mission until I finish everything else. I don't know how I feel about Bioware's decision on this one, I feel like they're like "okay you don't have to complete the rest of your team and can finish the game." This makes me sad because I'm loving every minute of this game.

What exactly is the IFF? Been searching for the meaning of the acronym but no luck... on my 1st playthrough I just got to the Collector's ship (or was forced on it by mistake, talked to the IM and he sent me there directly)... I still have to recruit Samara and do a lot of loyalty/N7 missions...
