I'm starting to think that there may be a timeframe for the vents. I tried with Tali in vent, Garrus as teamleader both times, Samara for shield, Morlin as escort and i used Miranda and Jack in my team. I saved all plus the Doc but lost kelly and the crew. Doc said i should have been faster. hmmm.

I believe that means not taking anytime for anymore sidequests once the crew is taken.  If you go straight through the relay you'll save every member of the crew.

Everyone survived and my team looked like this.

Vents: Legion

Second Team Lead: Garrus

Escort: Jacob

Distraction Leader: Garrus

Biotic: Samara

Had Grunt and Jack with me through the whole thing.

Alot of folks saying they used Tali for the tech specialist. That's what I did, but she died! I had her loyalty, too, so I'm not sure what happened, there.

Also, chose Mordin as a fireteam leader (he has STG experience, yanno?) and he died. Everyone else survived, but Tali and Mordin were my favorites. D:

A caveat, Mordin died at the end on my playthrough for no reason.  I ditched Legion onto Cerberus and had tech damage and tech cooldown research available but left unfinished.  Maybe I need Legion

I thought he would be best, cause he's an AI. Who better to think under pressure then a machine who knows know fear, or can't be nervous.

Besides I actually liked him.

Hrm. Maybe not having all the tech upgrades makes it more likely for tech characters to die at various points? I had most (but not all) tech upgrades, and both tali and mordin died. I imagine legion only survived because I kept him on my squad the whole time.

Seems to me that unless you have Miranda, Garrus, or Jacob lead the second team, your vent person dies.

Seems like anyone other than Jacob or Thane escorting the crew back to the ship means people die.

Anyone other than Garrus, Miranda, Jacob for the diversion team will die once you meet up again.

using anyone other than jack or samara as your bubble lady means people will start dieing.

Not having all the ship upgrades means people will start dieing.

Heh.

I had full loyalty for everyone and at the biotic bubble portion I used the Merc guy (whats his name? old guy) to escort chakwas and kelly back; used miranda for the bubble, and had jack and someone else with me - jack died. So full loyalty does not factor in to who lives and dies on this portion. Nobody else died though, used garrus both times for fire team leader, legion as tech specialist.

Played on normal, had full loyalty and all upgrades.

Sent Legion as Tech

Miranda was squad leader both times

Jack was my biotic

Everybody lived

Loyalty helps decide who lives or dies, but isn't a complete deciding factor. Mainly it's about choosing the best person for each job.

Garrus took the crew back just fine.  As a vanguard I prefer rolling with
Thane (and Grunt).  Then again Mordin died at the end for me.

Apparently there is a one mission limit after the Reaper IFF mission before your crew dies by the time you go through the Omega 4 relay.

Just in case to be clear I mean I never picked up Legion after the IFF mission.  Instead I gave him to Cerberus.  Tali was my tech specialist (I sent her potentially to her death because I didn't like her, haha). Mordin died at the end on the blocking team.

I'm kinda sick of trying at this moment though lol

Loyalty: All

Upgrades: Ship - All

Crew - Only Grunt

Vents: Legion

Fireteam 1: Garrus

Fireteam 2: Garrus

Biotic Shield: Jack

Crew escort: Jacob

No deaths at all. I've seen people do a lot more then me in terms of upgrading, and they still have some deaths. I figured I was just really lucky.

Loyalty: All
Upgrades: All ship upgrades, I missed a few upgrades for shotguns (2/5) and sniper rifles (3/5) and biotics.

Vents: Legion; I noticed towards the end of the cutscene, he sparks at his waist (which I thought might've killed him cause he got overloaded or something) but he survived. Loyalty probably a factor.

Fireteam 1: Garrus. I chose him to lead because he had experience leading squads and I trust him
My Team: Miranda, Samara

Fireteam 2: Miranda. Not sure why I chose Miranda, it looked like she got shot as she clutched her waist in the cutscene and I thought it was a foreshadow, but she lived. Loyalty probably a factor.
Biotic Shield: Samara. Towards the end I thought she wasn't going to make it, had me tense! Probably would've succumbed if she wasn't loyal.
My Crew: Garrus, Thane
Escort: Zaeed. I thought he was suitable because of his mercenary experience.

Final Battle: Jacob & Mordin. I thought they both died at the end, but I lifted the debris off them and they stood up relatively unhurt.

Interesting how everyone says pick Tali for vents...I chose her and she was loyal and she got "BOOM Headshot"

Picked Zaeed for second team
Grunt and Samera with me

Zaeed on Second team...he died but was loyal
Thane and Legion with me

Escort-Grunt
Thane and Legion with me

Edit

First run through, I had:

Tech Specialist -- Legion, Diversion Team -- Samara
Legion got a Seeker straight to the flashlight

Bubble -- Samara, Diversion Team -- Grunt, Escort -- Garrus
Grunt got it in the back when the teams met up again. :?

I think Thane to hold the line.
Tali and Jack with me.

Entire squad loyal. All but two upgrades.
Maybe I took too long to regroup? Maybe survival is based on another counter we're not considering? I dunno.

Anyone else wondering if Jack had a Furian with a shinejob and a haircut like hers in her colorful past? :D
If yes, it'd be awesome to see an alternate outfit for her that included goggles!

I've tried it twice:

Tech: Legion/Tali

First Team: Miranda/Garrus

Second Team: Garrus/Jacob

Biotic: Jack/Samara

Escort: Mordin/Zaeed (but bring Mordin with you against Arnold if you don't make him escort)

Make sure that you're loyal with EVERY teammate before you attempt the suicide mission. I also don't know if talking to your team throughout the entire game is a necessity or not. Do it anyway. People have obviously been getting different results with the perfect endings. Rather intriguing. :)

Where did you recruit Jason? Would be nice having a SquadMember wearing a Goalie-mask + High regeneration.

My combo worked on the first shot.

All ship upgrades, all character upgrades, everyone Loyal.

Legion in the vents.

Garrus as diversion leader.

Zaeed & Miranda on my squad.

After rescuing people...

Garrus as 2nd team lead.

Mordin as crew escort.

Miranda & Zaeed on my squad.

Samara as Biotic specialist.

Picked "hold the line" option.

M & Z again for final confrontation.

From what I've read, the big choices are:

Tali or Legion for Vents (you need a tech specialist).

Garrus or Miranda for 2nd Team (both have leadership experience).

Anyone for crew escort if they are loyal (though Mordin has a high chance of being killed during the "Hold the Line").

Samara or Jack (if upgraded) for Biotic Specialist.

You should leave either Garrus or Miranda with the group that is "Holding the Line" (I hear this improves the odds that no one dies).

Happy hunting!

Veteran

Tech: Legion.
Second team leader: Miranda.
I brought Jacob and Tali.

Biotic: Samara
Diversion: Garrus
I brought Miranda and Tali

Escort: Grunt

Last team: Garrus and Tali.

I had all the ship upgrades, naturally, and all the character specific upgrades. I didn't have all equipment upgrades, weapons, tech damage etc but I had most of them. Everyone was loyal.

Everyone survived, including the captured crew.

Tali/Legion in vents, MIranda/Jacob for fire team lead (both times), Samara/Jack for shield, Mordin for returning crew, Legion in party (dual a-m rifle squad ftw),

After the reaper IFF mission if you do legion's mission immediately after..... then that cutscene for your crew disappearing takes place on the next attempted mission..... and your fine to save everyone

Don't assign anyone who isn't loyal to you- they will always die.

This is the set up I've used twice already- the other two play throughs I killed quite a few :(

Legion-tech

Miranda

Miranda

Samara

Grunt-escort

Do not- I repeat- do not- bring any humans with you during the 'shield' part- they will get swiped by the swarm.

I read people used Garrus to lead the squads but every time I did, he died. I guess the order in which you assign is very important.

@NvVanity:

I did the IFF mission, then rushed to do Legion's mission, and lost half the Normandy crew. They do NOT give you enough time to do both, it sucks.

I've done two playthroughs and everyone made it for me both times.  Everybody was at full loyalty both times.

First time:

Tali as tech specialist
Miranda as fire team leader
Garrus and Grunt in my squad
then
Samara as biotic specialist
Miranda as fire team leader again
Garrus and Tali in my squad through swarms and final boss
Sent Jacob back with Chakwas

Second Time:
Tali as tech specialist
Garrus as fire team leader
Grunt and Thane in my squad
then
Samara as biotic specialist
Garrus as fire team leader again
Tali and Thane in my squad through swarms
and Tali and Garrus in squad for boss fight
sent Jacob back with Chakwas and crew

That worked out great for me.  I actually think Garrus was better at fire team leading because nobody seems to have a problem with him.  Miranda works as well, but Jack hates her guts so I picked Garrus for roleplaying reasons.  Plus Garrus is just cooler.

Legion as tech specialist
-Since he's extremely good at that and seems a way better choice for infiltration than Tali.

Made Garrus leader on both occasions
-Since he's got experience from his work in the Terminus systems. Apparently he's a tactical genius? Certainly struck me as more impressive than Miranda and Jacob.  Also, there was the Miranda/Jack thing, plus Jacob just seemed lame compared to Garrus.

Escort: Jacob
-This was a difficult choice. Wanted to send someone strong who I never use.

Biotic: Samara
-For some reason felt she was the most powerful biotic...

1st team: Grunt and Thane
-figured this was a battering-our-way-through mission, so picked who I thought were the toughest guys in the team.

2nd team: Grunt and Jack
-another battering through mission, so picked Grunt; but picked Jack in case Samara f'd up.

3rd team: Thane and Legion
-Wanted to bring as much gun finesse with me, and leave as much muscle back at the door.

Everyone survived.

Also, destroyed collector base and reaper... mainly it was Legion who got me thinking about how all our tech is based on Reaper technology. So destroyed it. Plus I saved the Rachni and re-wrote all those Geth, so hopefully that'll be enough in the next game...
