No matter what I do my tech person always seems to die despite having all the upgrades, Legion or Tali and it's driving me nuts honestly I want that accolade.

Unlike a lot of people for the first team leader I choose Samara, Miranda comments on what a good choice this is and never had a problem with her in the lead... hmm or maybe that is the reason my tech keeps dieing when back and talked some more to them before hitting the relay but didn't seem to do anything.

Not managed it yet (only done two playthrough's tho, not tried the mission by loading savegames).

First playthrough (Soldier) :

Thane for the ducts

Miranda leading the second team

Samara for biotic bubble

Me using Garrus and Legion as squad mates.

Lost the entire crew (the ones i sent back), Jack and Thane.

Second playthrough (Sentinel) :

Tali for the ducts

Miranda leading the second team

Samara for biotic bubble

Me using Garrus and Grunt as squad mates.

Everyone but Jack made it.

3rd time's the charm :P

I still got six loyalties to do when the collectors came and abducted the crew. Apparently sidequests or assignments count as missions as well. The player is kinda forced to pass any other mission but the plot-ones and the team/loyalty-ones or people will die.

This is annoying, somehow. Is it not?

Interesting how everyone says pick Tali for vents...I chose her and she was loyal and she got "BOOM Headshot"

Picked Zaeed for second team
Grunt and Samera with me

Zaeed on Second team...he died but was loyal
Thane and Legion with me

Escort-Grunt
Thane and Legion with me

Edit

First run through, I had:

Tech Specialist -- Legion, Diversion Team -- Samara
Legion got a Seeker straight to the flashlight

Bubble -- Samara, Diversion Team -- Grunt, Escort -- Garrus
Grunt got it in the back when the teams met up again. :?

I think Thane to hold the line.
Tali and Jack with me.

Entire squad loyal. All but two upgrades.
Maybe I took too long to regroup? Maybe survival is based on another counter we're not considering? I dunno.

No, you picked bad diversion team leaders both times. The ones that work are (at least) Garrus, Jacob and Miranda - and of course, the specialists have to be loyal.

In the first phase, no matter where you mess up, it's apparently the tech specialist that gets killed (bad tech spec, bad diversion team leader, timeout).

Zaeed seems to work well as an escort.

Aww.. and Miranda was complimenting me on choosing Samara for the first phase too! Ah well.. first run was for fun and story anyways; not a serious attempt at having everyone survive. I'm thinking maybe Jacob to lead the diversion teams for my next run.

Odd how it's the specialist that gets killed if the diversion team leader screws up. You'd think it should be the one that screws up that takes a seeker between the eyes.

Makes sense that the diversion team leader should have squad experience for the squad to survive. Grunt's more like a tank.. run in and crush everything.. probably took more hits than he should have. Sounded like he lost his shields a few times while I was still in the bubble.

@ Dimiye: Yes, you have to choose a combat veteran with leadership qualifications. I chose Samara, too, then Miranda, but Legion kept getting killed at the doors. I guess they both have a lot of battle experience, but don't really make for good leaders. I finally succeeded in keeping the Tech specialist (among others) alive by choosing Jacob as the team leader.

My team picks:

Tech: Legion / Tali
Squad1A: Miranda, Samara
Squad2A Lead: Jacob
Biotic: Jack
Escort: Garrus
Squad1B: Miranda, Samara
Squad2B Lead: Jacob

Miranda should work fine, if she's loyal. The tech specialist has to be loyal too, and you have to hit all the valve milestones on time. Of course, there could still be some unmapped modifiers, but this is the first I've heard of Miranda not working as a squad leader.

@ Funker

Yeah, I couldn't figure it out either. I got all the valves quickly - even while I was still under fire. All the team members were loyal. However, while the jammed door was being fixed, Legion kept getting hit by that rocket. I didn't have any problems when I switched to Jacob and Tali, and everyone survived until the end. Maybe it was something specific with Legion's dialogue strings that I missed o_O

I did choose to rewrite the Geth... Does that have any immediate impact on ME2's ending? Shouldn't, really. Now I have to go back and see if I can keep Legion alive at the door somehow.

Addendum - Nevermind. I restarted the suicide mission, and Legion survived as Tech while Miranda was team2 leader. Strange. I might have loaded a saved game without his loyalty the first time around. -_-'

In my first playthrough i had most things upgraded such as ship upgrades, special weapons and armour. the only unloyal person was miranda as i sided with jack when they had a fight. And Tali died...Why?? She was my favourite character. I don't understand how the game chooses death

Vents: Legion (tech specialist)

Fire Team: Garrus (leadership experience)

My Team: Miranda/Tali

Bubble: Samara (biotic specialist)

2nd Team: Garrus

My Team: Tali/Miranda

Escort: Mordin

2nd Team: Garrus (seeing a theme?)

My Team: Tali/Miranda

Winner!

Veteran difficulty - Vanguard.

All Loyal (did all my loyalty missions prior to IFF), max upgrades to ship, most upgrades to personnel. Not sure if this matters, but everybody's personal skill (ie the one absolutely unique to them, not the loyalty one) was maxed out for everybody. I 'borrowed' the Barrier shields as my loyalty skill (which helped my Vanguard immensely)

Chose Legion as my Tech, Miranda as head of second team

Mordin and Grunt with me.

Samara was my biotic, Miranda stayed in charge of the second team and Legion and Grunt came with me.

My crew survived, Zayeed escorted them back (I reasoned that he has the firepower to handle himself)

Last Mission Miranda and Legion watched my back while the others held them off.

I used Tali to go through all the various tech stuff, she was loyal and survived. I did however lose Legion (forgot what I had him do) and iirc I put Grunt as a team lead for the diversion and lost him too. Should have picked a better leader char since he's a n00b to that kinda stuff. Forgot to mention that Jack was not loyal, used her to shield and she survived. Lost her loyalty after the cat fight cause I chose Miranda.

Yay! Got it.

Ship had all upgrades bar med bay. All loyal team, got Legion's Loyalty mission straight away so everyone was already loyal when the IFF thingy happened.

Headed straight through the Omega 4 relay as soon as it was available.

Sent Tali into the vents and Garrus headed the second fireteam.

Then I had Samara do the biotic bubble and Miranda lead the second fireteam.

Zaeed took the crew back to the ship.

For the final battle I took Miranda and Mordin with me - as they were my regular squad throughout the game.

Everyone lived, and we all flew away into the sunset. :)

There seems to be a recurring factor dictating that, apart from the obvious tech and biotic specialists, your team leaders and crew escort must consist of Miranda, Jacob, or Garrus, and these three have be loyal in order for their specific tasks to be successful. You can switch things around, and any one of them can head the fire, distraction, and escort groups, but their personal missions must have been completed. Anyone else who isn't loyal is still likely to die, but it won't affect the overall outcome of the suicide mission as long as they are not placed in a leadership or specialist role.

Samara, for one, is a popular and powerful squad member; but no matter what setup I've tried, the tech specialist dies if Samara is the fire team leader, regardless of full loyalty and complete squad equipment upgrades. Very frustrating -_-'

Has anyone had any measure of success with Samara as a Team2 leader or escort? A thousand years old... One would think she would have developed leadership qualities by now. Maybe it was those 4 centuries of working as a Justicar that ruined it =/

Form what I've seen, in order to have everyone come out alive this is who you have to choose:

Tech: Tali or Legion, must be loyal.

Second Team Leader: Miranda, Jacob, or Garrus, must loyal.

Biotic: Jack or Samara, must be loyal.

Escort: Loyal team mate.

As long as you only pick from those choices in each role, everyone should come out alive. Picking even one character for any role outside that list is probably going to end up with people dieing, loyal or not. That means no Samara for team lead, no Thane for tech, etc.

Forest, while I agree with you Justicars as said in game are lone wolf types. She hasn't had a need for leadership skills likely killing everyone in her way rather than trying to convince them to step aside so she can do her thing. I'd think that at that old being able to negotiate (say with the asari detective) would have been the wiser move to make however she plainly said that she would go through anyone in her way including said detective.

DaeJi, I used Jack as my Biotic (for the bubble part) she was not loyal, she survived.

Did anyone else die? That's my point, those character must be used for those role every time or you could lose characters.

Dunno. Does the tech specialist you send into the vents die?

I suspect that if you have all upgrades and full loyalty and go immediately into the relay after getting the IFF, everyone will survive.

All I did was the loyalty quest for Legion before heading to the relay, and Kelly died on me. ;(

I just finished the game. I lost part of the crew (poor kelly) because I didn't get to the relay as soon as I could.

I lost Legion who was my tech person. I had all of the other 'requirements' as far as who were team leaders biotic/tech and all were loyal.

I'm not sure what determines whether the tech person lives or not but Legion bought the farm. (Which didn't break my heart because of his decision regarding the Quarians.)

Isn't it impossible to keep everyone loyal though? Jack and Miranda (and legion and Tali) both have arguments that make one of them unloyal to you.

its not impossible to keep all party members loyal at least for a paragon, just choose the charm option, not sure about renegade as I never play one, I really can't get past the massively bigoted slant it seems to have.
