I have noticed that a lot of people have posted about blue screens, however my computer goes completely OTT and decides to power down instead. Once this happens I cannot power up again for at least 5 mins.
I thought this was a hardware problem at first, but I have run my computer on WOW for 2 hours and also surfed the net and it has not occurred again. It seems to be a problem with mass effect 2 only.
The first time it happened was on the custom character creation screen, the second time was about 15 mins into the tutorial mission after I had created my character.
I've seen a similar problem in Empire Total War and it turned out to be an autosave bug, but still it was not extreme enough to actually put my computer into a hard power off state.
I was running in 16:10 ratio @ 1900x1200 or something like that.
Computer Specs are as follows -
Asus M4A-78 Pro MOBO
8GB Corsair DDR2 @ 1066gz
AMD Phenom II quad core @ 3gz
Radeon 4850HD
4 x hard drives (dont ask)
Complete power down after 30 mins play

A total shutdown like that is indicative of CPU that's hit it's thermal limit. Check the temps.

Aye, either the CPU or GPU overheating are extremely common causes for forced shutdown. A possible fix: get some compressed air, open up your case, and shoot some compressed air to clean any dust lying around. Don't use things that can cause static electricity

The problem you're describing definately sounds to be a hardware issue. Most likely heat related. I know some games cause my video card to overheat and it's an ATI 4870HD. ME2 is a lot more graphically intense than WoW, so most likely I'd start looking at your card.
Something I've noticed with the ATI cards is that no matter how hot the card is getting, the fan speed never goes over 30% or so on it's own; so you may want to go into the catalyst control center, open up the ATI Overdrive menu and manually set your fan speed to 70% - 100% when you're playing ME. It'll also tell you how hot your card is running,
Quick edit: Just a quick note, while you're in that Overdrive menu be careful not to adjust the other settings. You don't want to start messing with the overclocking features unless you've invested in some after market cooling. Just enable manual fan control and crank it up.
Also, if you don't have the option to turn up your fan speed, update your drivers and control center, the fan speed control wasn't added until a version or two ago.

Computers automatically shut down if they overheat.
Check your fans to see if they're all spinning and don't have dust in them.
Mass Effect 2 taxes your hardware much more than WoW so that could explain why it doesn't happen with WoW.
Might also be a power supply problem.
Also, have you overclocked your system at all?

Sounds more like an overheating issue. When was the last time you cleaned out your PC? What kind of heatsink are you using on your CPU? Stock or after market?
Remove the side of your case and see if that helps some, if it does, get a can of air (Dust-off etc) and really get into your CPU and video heat sink and cleaout all of those massive dust bunnies.
WoW has not been a good "benchmark" for a well working PC for sometime.

I removed the side of my case and ran the game for 10 mins, then ran PC wizard to check my temps.
The cpu had gone to 60 degrees, which is ok when under load, 75 is my cut off point in bios settings. Interestingly the GPU had reached 90 degrees, this is most likely the culprit then.
I will follow the pointers in TeddyBearMan's post and see how far I get.
Thanks all for the fast replies

TeddyBearMan you are a genius. Fan was locked to 30%, switched it to 70 manually and watched those numbers drop like seconds
ATI should really look into that one.

Its the same with Nvidia cards I think, even if they are set to auto. In windows 7 anyway, while the gpu fan auto control works in windows xp for me atleast, well it could work be working better, it doesn't increase the fan speed alot during load but some, so it stays around 70 degrees under load. It could even be so that upgrading your drivers breaks it, if it was working before, just something one doesn't think about, or think to test.

I've played for 2 hours straight setting the fan speed manually to 80%, the GPU peaked at 79 degrees, so getting 90 must have been shutting the computer down.
I managed to play right up to the clinic in Omega.....then I levitated into the ceiling lol

It is with great sorrow that I report the complete shutdown of my PSU at 3.30am on Saturday morning. My marathon Mass Effect 2 session was just too much for my poor PSU to cope with. I wish to thank my PSU for not blowing up and destroying my sensitive CPU or GPU. PSU I salute thee, rest in pieces

As a reference what PSU did you have?
