I have the digital deluxe version of the game which I brought through STEAM.  I was able to register and download the content just fine, but when I got to install it I get the following error message: "Mass Effect 2 does not appear to be installed.  Please install the game and try again."

The game is in fact installed as I have been playing it.  Being I bought and downloaded the game through steam is there some special way I need to install the content, or maybe do I need a special version of the content?  The only thing I can think of that I do differently is that I DO NOT install games on my main drive.  My main drive is reserved for OS and vital programs ONLY.  Games go on my D: drive.  So the STEAM Client, and thus all the games I purchase through it are installed on my D: drive.  This shouldn't make difference, unless the downloads were made to search out for Mass Effect 2 or the STEAM client on the main C: drive or something; but I wouldn't imagine it would be programmed that way for instances like this.

Any help you can provide as to why the downloads don't see my Mass Effect 2 install would be much appreciated.

Here's a link to the steam forums where some users solved the problem.  http://forums.steamp....php?p=13212859

Basically the final fix was to edit the registry.  However as noted this can be problematic if you make a mistake.

Unfortunately the thread doesn't explain how to do it (what was edited?). I really don't like messing with the registry. I would like to know why this is happening, and does BIOWARE have a solution.

But thanks for the link. If I was comfortable working with the registry I would try it, but I am not.

This is an issue with steam. Basically the solution is to run the game ONCE before isntallign the dlc.

Why? Because steam doesnt make its game registry entries until you run it the first time. Please pass this info on to whoever.

Can one of you post this over in the steam forum?

I did. In fact, I didn't know about the DLC until running the game.  I didn't try installing the content until I had played the game up to the point where the "Ellusive Man" sends you on your first mission. I met Talli, stopped at that point and then tried to install the content. I have also since tried installing the content and I still get the same message.

This is not a fix. I tried the above. Even going so far as uninstalling and re-installing the game. Launched the game and then tried to install the downloadable content, and I still have the same issue. Is there a fix for this other than the above. I even tried installing it while the game was running and I get a "Mass Effect appears to still be running" error, then I exit the program and get the "Mass Effect does not appear to be installed error."

I have also checked with others that are having the same issue, and the above fix did not work for any of them. The only person I know that has had success manually edited the registry, which is very dangerous if you don't know what you are doing; and no game should require something like that to make it work right as it can mess up your machine.

Is there a way to get this flagged or being it is tagged "BioWare" meaning a rep has posted in it, will it never again be looked at, because what happens in cases like this one where a fix is suggested, but it doesn't work.

I have the same problem with the Cerberus Arc Projector :-(
However the solution mentioned above worked for me :-)

open up regedit, press WINDOW KEY + R, it should bring up the run tool, if not find it.
type in REGEDIT and press enter.
once in regedit navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > BIOWARE > MASS EFFECT 2
once there look for the registry that says Path on name; edit it to where your STEAM copy of ME2 is located
C:\\\\Program Files\\\\\\\\Steam\\\\steamapps\\\\common\\\\mass effect 2
in most cases

The fix might not work immediately. Restart your PC to be sure.

I was having the same problem because I first ran ME2 from my D drive. I moved it over to my C drive when I couldn't apply the patch but still got the same error. I ended up downloading the ME2 registry from regfiles.net and it works fine now. Hope this helps :)

This registry edit fixed my installation problem---however, I had to quit and re-launch Steam first. I also rebooted, but that might not be necessary.

I had this problem with the Steam version of ME1 a few months ago, I don't remember exactly but I had to do some administrator or compatibility tweaks or something. I'm pretty sure I never touched the registry though.

I appreciate the Steam copy protection under normal circumstances, but getting Bioware/EA DLC content has been a real pain. I am usually very loyal but may have to buy a regular old retail box for Mass Effect 3.

Opening regedit worked for me. Thanks for the advice. I'd downloaded from Impulse btw.

Same problem (retail version). Editing registry seems to have worked though.

Same problem with the Steam Version. Game is installed, I've run it multiple times, but can't install the DLC. I tried the regedit fix, but the path to ME2 doesn't even exist.

Tried running steam as admin? or temporary disable UAC then starting steam and running ME, it could be you "the user" or the program don't have admin rights to make changes into the registry and UAC is blocking it.

Thanks - I'll give that a shot. I tried running the DLC installer as admin as well as ME2, but that didn't work.

Edit:  by running steam as administrator, then manually navigating to MassEffect2.exe and running it as administrator and then running the DLC installer as administrator, I was able to get it to work.  The registry entry still doesn't show up, but the DLC installed so I'm not all that concerned.  Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the solution somesmart..I'm having the exact same issue (I'm on Vista 64 for the record) and your fix worked. I was racking my brain and wasting time trying to find some registry fix. Apparently the installer for the downloadable DLC files is pretty poorly coded and something is wrong with the way it finds installed paths. I guess the issue isn't too common.

I have this same problem on both dragon age and mass effect 2 with all newer dlc, that being the dlc i PAID for, lelianas song/kasumi/overlord

it's preposterous to have to edit registry and potentially break something important just to get your moneys worth.

i use the steam version of dragon age and the retail dvd version of mass effect 2, and have the same issue.

definitely time for some more bioware insight on this

i have mass effect 2 through Steam, downloaded and installed through steam, and all the game's files are in the Steam directory. I want to install the DLC content i bought from this site, and I've already downloaded each of the installers. I know many of you are familiar with the error "Mass Effect 2 does not appear to be installed. Please install the game and try again." - but now that I've added keys to my registry, the installers fail and/or crash immediately upon opening them. Nothing is working for me. I need help. :(

I am running Windows 7 for the record. It's truly preposterous how much pain you go through. To say Mass Effect 2 is such a well-made game of it's type and generation, how could such a small and insignificant error be overlooked? They are the one's making the dlc after all. It would behoove them to look into it. Or at least create Steam-run/Steam-based installers.
