While it would be better if Bioware unlocked the saves, there is a workaround; as long as you keep playing on one machine (sorry, this workaround wont solve the problem of playing on different machines)

The workaround is to do a complete backup of the PS3. Just plug in an USB-drive that is formatted in FAT32 and then go to system settings abd backup your hard-disk.

It's not something I do daily (takes way too long to do the backup) but I did it when I replaced the hard disk in my PS3.

That's the way you do it, backups for nothing and your saves for free (play on Dire Straits Image IPB) .  For laughs, you ought to go see the thread in DA:O General Discussion about a petition to unlock the saves and see what dire straits these people are in.  I won't put the link here to protect the innocent, but just look for :petition" in the title and watch how they lynched me when I tried to suggest a workaround. Image IPB  It's like 1860's Mississippi or 1930's Germany in there.  They actually think Bioware can do something about this.  Deduction would tell them that if they haven't locked the saves on all other platforms except the PS3, then it's not Bioware's decision on this or they would have provided it for the PS3 in the first place.

The only problem with this is if you have a hardware failure, your backup is gone too.  When you restore that backup to a new PS3, if the save is 'locked' it won't work.  I'm only guessing, but I guess it uses the same seed as the hard drive encryption - which would be unique to each PS3.  Some people play on multiple PS3's too (one at your house, one at girlfriends/parents/baby's mama/whatever).  Save locks forces a new game for each machine, which is unpracticle for a game with this depth.

If the save were unlocked, you could copy to a usb stick - like 90% of the other games out there.  And while the PS3 may be the only system locked (I'm taking your word, don't own the xbox/pc copies), it was still Bioware's decision in the end.  Otherwise, there would not be 90% of titles with unlocked saves, and titles like RE:5 (and others) that had a patch to unlock the save after consumer back lash.  If Sony really wanted to buly everyone into locked saves, they would do a firmware update that made it so regardless of developer action.

I think sony should simply block locking save games with a new firmware , so no one can lock the save games . It could be a fair thing, infact we are asking to unlock save games, not dlc you should pay for it.

It's not right that sony system allow to game developers to lock the save games, anyway it's clear that BioWare choose to lock their save games so also they are to blame.

I really still don't understand why save games should be locked, what is the problem if someone copy his/her save games ? Do BioWare or EA lose some money if I'm able to copy my saved games ? I really can't find any valid reason.

It's basically for trophy/cheating protection.
With copyable saves, theoretically people could exchange save files.
That could allow one person to send another person a save file that 'earned' a bunch of trophies... so the second person would get all the trophies without having done the 'work'.

Not saying I agree with locking the saves (I don't... I think not allowing me to back up my own data is excessively protectionist)... but as for the 'why's', that's generally the reason why.

maybe there are additional ramifications for dlc items... don't know... i.e. what if I sent you a save where a character has warden's commander armour... but you didn't have the warden's keep dlc.  Would you be able to use the armour?  Would it bork the game?    I don't know... but it could be an added concern.

mmm.... and so? Earning trophies on ps3 gives only the possibility to show them , you won't get any discount or extra content if you earn all trophies... So what's the matter ?

This should be a more valid reason but I think they should simply include a check in game that prohibits having items from dlc if you don't have that dlc, it could be easy, if for example I have warden's commander armour equipped in my save game and pass it to a friend of mine that doesn't have warden's keep armour, after loading the character was wearing that armour should be naked.

If they want, there are many ways to do this easily and keep the possibility to copy saved games.

I don't disagree in the slightest.

You were asking why they lock saves at all, I was just responding with the 'typical' reasons given to justify save locking.

Personally, I couldn't care less if someone wants to elevate their gamer cred by trophy cheating, I would much rather be able to back up my data as I saw fit.

I agree with your last sentence, it is the key point for me.

Anyway I have another doubt : if the locking is done to avoid dlc items spreading to people doesn't have that dlc installed, why did they make this lock only on PS3? I don't know if in xbox360 is technically possible but I think it couldn't be difficult to protect against copying a file on PC. If they would have locked all save games on all platforms it could have been an acceptable explanation.

Anyway : what happens if a pc user import a save game from a friend that has got warden's keep armor and the user that is importing doesn't have warden's keep dlc ? I really don't know so I'm asking.

If , as I think, the game won't import not owned dlc items they should have done the same thing on ps3 keeping save games unlocked.

Umm, no. I had a PS3 before trophies where created, and owned  3 games that retroactively added trophies after they came out: Mercenaries 2, SW The Force Unleashed, and Uncharted. None of these game added every trophy I earned, I had at least beaten all three, to my list. That is a not a reason.

I read that someone updated their Dragon Age and their saves were lost. This didn't happen to me but seriously unlock the save to back them up.

/signed. My PS3 died a few weeks back and this time I was lucky enough to get my own console back instead of a replacement, so I still have my saves. I wanted to do another playthrough in advance of the DLC so I could get a character exactly how I wanted it, but now I'm not going to in case the console craps out halfway through. This stupid decision to lock the saves has actually put me off playing the game anymore, and the fact that anyone at Bioware or anywhere else for that matter thinks that's a good thing beggars belief.

Sign the petition in my sig. if you haven't already.   Put your name to it, and hopefully we'll get enough to make them listen.

Yes, I lost three full playthroughs and other origin story characters to YLOD and also my game disk is stuck inside my ps3 so much for 200+ hours of gameplay.

I raised a similar question : I asked if the upcoming patch will unlock the saves and I pointed what issues give locking saves but they replied me (after 5 days ) :

Unfortunately, EA Customer Support does not have detailed information
on game development and releases, as well as the consoles that they are
to be released for. Information such as this is in the hands of the
game's developers.

I think that support.ea.com is almost useless about questions like these.

Anyway I didn't know that there was an online petition, I just signed it anyway.

The trophies are synced to psn server and they are safe, you only have to sync them once you get one.

yeah i meant in the context of the saves being locked because it stops trophy cheating.the trophies should be secondary to the game, and really arent important.

I'm sorry, I misunderstood your post. Anyway I agree with you, locking saves only to stop cheating trophies seems mad, anyway it couldn't be the real reason since PC and XBOX360 have both achievements and their saves aren't locked.

No there is a game that got from locked to unlocked on PS3 I don't remember the name but I'm quite sure that the initial game was locking saved games and after a patch the developers unlocked them.

Please check your facts first as this is not true. The Resident Evil 5 game saves were locked and then later unlocked via an update, presumably because enough people kicked off about it.
