I am planning to play a soldier (Hardcore difficutly).
I am trying to decide whether to pick commando or schoktrooper.
I'm going to take hardened Adrenaline rush for the damage reduction.
It seems that the hitpoint bonus from shocktrooper is overkill if I already have hardened AR. Have others found that on higher difficulties they needed the extra hitpoints?
Also, is the paragon/renegade bonus from shocktrooper useful? Can you max out paragon by midgame without the shocktrooper bonus? I don't want to miss any paragon checks because I took commando.

I just started a NG+ on Hardcore with my Soldier [beat game on normal for my first time through] and while you have to be careful, I prefer the hardened AR as my safety net and specced Commando to bring things down faster.
If you get caught in a bad situation the extra HPs can definitely help but I just prefer the firepower route >.>
As for the paragon/renegade bonus I didn't find I needed the one from Shocktrooper, since there is just a ton of ways to get either type of points.

I weighed it, I went Commando for Insanity. I figure, the bonus health isn't gonna help me that much given how hard everything hits you when you aren't in cover. And I went Heightened to squeeze off more shots during AR.
I miss the bonus negotiation though.
That said if you are really leaning on using Hardened AR, the increased duration from Shocktrooper will be nice.

So you do miss the negotiation bonuses?
I am starting with 190 paragon from my ME1 character. Is there no way to max paragon quickly without shocktrooper?

Also, do you find hieghtened AR to be a useful dps boost? I figure I don't need the extra time slow down to dodge things, but I guess it does increase the number of shots you can get off with an Assault Rifle.
Also, how quickly can you get the Geth Assault Rifle? If it's really late game, is it worth it to take the Revanant Assault Rifle instead? I hope not. I really want to take the widow maker.

I prefer the hardened AR because I tend to use it to step out into a field of fire to unload my Revenant on something. The duration increase is so-so as I find AR recharges fast enough anyway.
Geth Assault Rifle is on Tali's recruit mission on Hardcore and up. I'm not sure how well it works but it sounds like it's as good as the Collector AR thus far. The only real knock against the Revenant is it's long range accuracy. Nothing shreds better then it at med to close range.
Though I got it on my normal playthrough and in Hardcore I'll pick up the Widow to compliment it now
As for negotiation bonuses, when I did new-game + with my Shepherd, I did not retain my paragon bonuses - but so far I've been able to make my negotiations w/o issue. You just have so much opportunity to gain Paragon points I don't find the Shocktrooper's bonus to it to be "needed"

The best option is to go Shock Trooper until you max either paragon or Renegade, then respec and hit Commando. Remember that the difference here is 6% weapon damage. Your only power that is increased by the power damage bonus is concussive shot. It's not like you are losing a ton of offense here, it's minimal at best and you can make up for it by having a longer Adrenaline Rush.

Thanks guys.
I think I'll go heightened Adrenaline Rush with shock trooper. I'm going to be fighting from cover most of the time so the damage reduction from Hardened AR may not be too useful.

I went straight up damage on everything. Even on insanity, you won't die easily if you use cover and make sure to regen if you're low on health. I wanted my sniper headshots to do crazy damage lol.
so..heightened adrenaline rush and commando here
