I bought Mass Effect from Steam a few days ago. Downloaded successfully and tried to run it. Typical steam message "Preparing to Launch..." appears, then disappears, and nothing happens. The game fails to launch, but it shows up in Windows Task Manager as a Process. I've searched the forums and most people haven't had problems with XP 64 bit, which is what I'm running. I've tried the most popular fix to this sort of problem, which is running it as an admin, but that does not work either. I'll leave my rig specs in case there is a known conflict b/w hardware and the game, but it should run properly. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Running XP Pro 64bit on Intel Core2Duo 3.17Ghz, 4GB RAM, Asus P5N-D Mobo, Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 gpu, 150GB WD VelociRaptor 10000rpm SATA hdd.

I am having the same exact problem. I run XP SP2 64bit. If I try to run it from DOS prompt:

autorun /auto

I get: "The program or feature E:\\autorun.exe cannot start due to incompatibility with 64-bit Windows".

Were you able to solve your problem? It's been almost 3 months from your post. I guess 64bit XP is not supported. Should I return the game to get a refund, or is it planned to add support?

I would not hold your breath waiting for Bioware (or anyone) to start supporting XP 64 bit. Not many companies ever did to begin with, and anyone 'adding' XP 64 support is unlikely, especially now that XP (32 bit) is being phased out.

I run both ME1 and 2 from Steam on 7 Pro 64 no prob.

I have XP x64 SP2 too, but i don't have any problems with games, even old games works! Maybe is your hardware, or system error.

Autorun will exit immediately refusing to run at all. Not any time to run any piece of critical code. It looks like it is preconfigured NOT to run on 64bit XP, although it could run in 32bit mode like most other games.

Sorry, forgot to list my hardware:

Intel i5 750 @2.67 Ghz
2 GB DDR2 RAM
Nvidia GEForce GTS250
1 TB SATA 2 WD HD
DirectX 9.0c

I have no issues with *any* other games. Only with ME2 autorun. No system errors whatsoever. Autorun will abort immediately, without having the chance to run any piece of critical code.

PC was recently purchased, so it could be that autorun keeps a list of hardware and this is not in there. It doesn't seem too involved and if someone could just take a look at it!

upgrade to Win7 or Vista at least. XP is pretty much legacy now.

tried running the 32bit explorer.exe? I know that was a problem when using 64bit explorer.exe trying to load a 32.bit dll. Maybe ME2 launcher is written weirdly.
