so do i have to be playing a mage to unlock blood mage? or can my rogue do it somehow?

You can also learn Shapeshifter by buying a book from the merchant in the Dalish camp. It only shows up after you complete the quest with the werewolves. He also has some other good stuff that he re-stocks at that point like skill books, etc.
