Yeah, after the greeting I got from Ashley, I'm replaying ME1 to get a save file where I've left her holding the business end of a nuclear explosion. Serves her right. :innocent:
I did that to leave my main shep romance free for ME2. Kaidan isn't any better. None of the Alliance/Council types are, despite having less of a reason to mistrust them than Tali, who intercedes on Shepard's behalf seconds after learning he is alive, warns him when her team rushes ahead, and then forwards additional data when Veeto is back with the fleet. She doesn't owe Shepard anything, she more than earned the right to that data on the geth by helping save the galaxy. The Alliance on the other hand owes Shepard quite alot. Elysium/Akuze/Torfan, all those "humanity needs you" missions from hackett, and then saving the entire galaxy. And they treat you like a traitor, even when all you've done is be woken up and investigate one colony. I lost my comp the week before the game came out, so I wasn't sure if Tali was a romance option, but I'm glad my main shep was romance free. Tali is definitely the best romance option in the game, and one of my favorite squaddies.

*Edit: And I personally found that the loyalty mission for Tali was the most emotional for me, there was just something very moving about Tali's responses, and actions during the entire mission.

Don't get me wrong - Tali's my favorite of the NPCs and has been since back in ME1. But I think you're selling the Alliance people short. Of the ones that I've met...
Anderson actually seemed LESS concerned about the fact that I was working with Cerberus than I'd expected.
Udina blew his top, but Udina always blows his top.
Ashley had an interesting reaction, which I think fits if you think about what she's learned.
First, she's told that you're still alive two years after she thought that you died, and working for Cerberus. She's sent to Horizon to investigate this (apparently TIM does this through his people in the military). I would imagine that the first thought that crosses her mind is that the information must be bad because -
1.) You'd have contacted her in the two year time gap if you were alive (and even with ME technology, people aren't ordinarily brought back from the dead), and
2.) There's not a chance in Hell that you'd work for Cerberus after the stuff that you learned about them in the first game
Second, once you save the Horizon colony, she sees for herself that you really are alive. Her reaction is divided into two parts. At first, she's happy to see you (she tells whatsisname that you're a "god", gives you a hug, etc...). That's her initial "I don't know how, but he's still alive!" grateful reaction. Then she realizes that you really are affiliated with Cerberus and blows her top. The game glosses over a lot of what Cerberus does, but her reaction is entirely justified. It's kind of like working with the ****s. It doesn't matter how good your reason for doing so is because you'll be lucky if people quit berating you long enough to explain.
Third, after you leave, she has time to cool down and think about everything that was said. If you had a relationship with her in the first game, it's at that point that you get her e-mail where she basically says that she'll be waiting for you to return.
The real problem with the scene, imo, is actually Bioware's fault. There should have been an option to go after Ashley (and I assume Kaiden works the same way) when she leaves and have a private chat with her where you basically force her to listen to you explain why you're working with Cerberus. I wouldn't expect her to up and leave for you (she's military - she doesn't do things like that; she goes where she's ordered, and she needs to report back to the Alliance regarding your presence on Horizon). But it would at least give more of an indicator about her conflicted feelings than the way things are handled in game.
And going after the Significant Other when they storm off is one of those traditional romantic things.
Another thing that Bioware should have done was put in a nod toward Garuss and Tali when they accompany you to meet your old companions (Garuss with Ashley/Kaiden, both of them with Wrex and Liara).
Tali also undoubtedly has a better reaction to you despite Cerberus because she appears to be caught up in just a little bit of hero worship where you're concerned. I don't think it's enough to be a problem, but it would take some truly dastardly acts on your part to convince her that you'd turned. She's willing to trust you because she believes in you implicitly. Unfortunately, I think the counterpoint to that is that she also sells herself short a bit, which is ironic since she's one of the two companions from the first game that I'd recommend in a heartbeat to the Specter program...
(Garrus is the other)

Its a true testament to her character and to the great writers at Bioware that a character can invoke a true emotional response from some one. That is why Tali is my favorite, she just has such an amazing personality. Its her personality and character that actually make me end up caring what she does, and what happens to her.

Same here. My main character in ME 1 was a female solider, but realizing I had no interest in the possible romances for females, I had to switch over to an ignored male adept and build him up in like a week! Manuel Shepherd is now my main, with his companion Tali.
I guess my female will just be loyal to Liara and see how that turns out.

On the suicide mission, I had Tali lead the diversion squads both times because she has experince leading teams of quarian marines (i completely forgot about Garus and his team on Omega). She was killed after the part with the bug swarms due to bullet wounds and holes in her suit. Thane then stood over her and said a prayer. I felt broken after that part, the rest of the final mission just felt sad.
Did anyone else have a sad experience with Tali like this?
