I wanted to attract attention to this and clarify it once and for all.
Why is it important? For an opportunity to take Legion to Tali's trial (thus having TWO quests - Tali's and Legion's loyalty) between the two missions.
(On a side-note, I hope I'll have time to pursue Tali romance between the two... right?)
So can you do ONE or TWO quests between Reaper IFF and final mission?

You'll be really crunching the timeline - I wish there was an option to delay the installing of the IFF after that mission so we could get more game time with Legion.
You can take as much time as you want technically but I wouldn't expect to rescue ANY crew by the time you get there :\\

You save Dr. Chakwas regardless of how long you take. I took about as long as possible, getting the IFF as soon as it was available and then going on to do just about every loyalty quest afterward, and the good doctor was just fine.
The entire rest of the crew got meltigoo'd though. :/

That's exactly what I'm wondering, can I save the crew as well?
I saw a couple of people post that you can do maximum two quests between those storyline missions, but it kind of went unverified. You can do one - Legion's loyalty, but can you do two?
I will have backup saves just in case, but I'm still wondering.

If you trigger Legion's loyalty mission, it stop the sequence with the crew abduction from occurring. I was able to go out and do an N7 mission, and then go do Legion's. Don't know if this would work with another story mission.

Okay... thanks. Trial and error, I guess. If anyone else has a confirmation, it'd be very much appreciated...

Yeah, I was able to do about 2 missions [Legion's and one other] plus some planet scanning/flying around before the Normandy got sacked. Then I spent some time talking to everyone about the attack and then flew off to get them back.

I did 2, Samara and Legion missions then went straight through the relay and everyone lived... Except the colonists but I don't think they could... hope they couldn't at least, I'd feel like an ass.

Only the beginning really differs, and slight dialogue changes during the trial itself:

Thank you!!
I don't think you can save the colonists either way... now all that's left is to hope that someone doesn't get randomly killed.
Just out of curiosity, what difficulty did you play on?

So Legion's Loyalty Mission is a time stopper? As long as you don't complete it, you can do anything you want in between and then resume completing it. Once you do, then the Collector attack happens. Am I right?

^That would be an interesting exploit, indeed. I'll try to test it, but I'm a couple of hours away from that.

The Normandy got sacked for me when I was going to do Legion's loyalty mission I forget how many other missions I had done after acquiring Legion though.

Verified.
Maximum limit after Reaper IFF mission: Two missions before the Collectors come to nail the Normandy in the quad. And no, doing Legion's loyalty mission does not "resume" the clock between the Collector attack and the rescue mission. The game code is counting how many missions you have done since the Collector attack.

Excellent! Thank you.
Well, my Tali romance might seem a little rushed then... but it doesn't bother me that much. I can still continue it after the endgame I bet.

They really need to do a sticky post with dev comments about this. Whenever I do it, after I turn Legion on, then I end up having to do one more loyalty quest before Legion's loyalty quest opens up. After I complete Legion's loyalty quest, I head to the Omega 4 relay, and then the Normandy attack triggers. I'm always left wondering if I could've squeezed a third one in there somewhere.
