After reading the notice posted in Deneram I visited The Pearl and mentioned it to the barmaid she signalled to go to the back room but nothing ever happened. What did I do wrong?

You have to go into the back and knock on the last door on the left.

you have to select "the giffons will rise again." or something and you'll find some "friends"

If you don't look at the poster you cannot activate this quest. I found this out in my current game. It doesn't give you the correct phrase in the dialogue options.
