Now, I don't know what's causing this, but my game crashes whenever I fight certain creatures. First and foremost, the Praetorians. When they get too close and fire their beam, it crashes. I said in an earlier thread that I diverted this by strafing around and keeping away from it.

Now, there's also another object that causes a similar crash. It's somewhat spoiler-related, so don't read below if you want to.

It's the Reaper Core on board the Derelict Reaper. I can clear the Husks out just fine, but when the core's shielding goes up, I crash, the music loops, and it's a generic white screen. I don't see any way I'm able to pass this, sadly enough.

I read in another thread that someone was having crash issues whenever a lightning-type effect was used by an opponent. Was that you?

Anyway, can you list your system specs? Perhaps someone can see something in them that may help.

I think so. Here are my specs:

OS: Vista
Processor: Intel® Core™2 Quad CPU    Q6600  @ 3.00GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.0GHz
Memory: 6142MB RAM
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT
Display Memory: 3820 MB

Well, that's all the info I got from DxDiag that looked useful.

Slight bump with info.

Reinstalling didn't help. I'm pretty sure it's just the lightning type thing as the above poster stated. It's troublesome, and if anyone can offer a workaround, I'd be glad to take it.

I'm having the same problem now at the derelict reaper's core and it seems likely to be the same problem that's causing my crashes on the Praetorians.

What seems to happen is if I'm looking at the Praetorian (or it's somehow in the camera view even partially) when it casts its blue lightning beam, the game crashes. I got around the two praetorian appearances prior to reaching the derelict reaper by running around, strafe shooting when safe, and hoping my teammates could kill it unassisted.

With the reaper's core, however, it's seemingly next to impossible to do this. What's happening is I can face the core and shoot it fine whenever it's completely open, but if it happens to be in camera view whenever it opens or closes, the game crashes. Once it's fully open or fully closed, I don't crash, just when it's in the process of opening or closing.

It seems pretty likely to be a graphics issue based on this, since I never have a problem unless the praetorian/core is actually in view when they do their respective abilities.

I'm also having this same problem. I first encountered it on the collector's ship, and now on the reaper. Not being able to continue the game is really frustrating...

Aside from that bug, the game runs fine with 1680x1050 and relatively maxed out settings on my PC.

Windows 7 64 Bit
3700+ Single Core
7800 GT with 256 MB
2 GB RAM

I tried the lowest settings etc. to no avail. Hopefully I'll be able to complete that part with my notebook (a dual centrino (T7200) with 2 GB RAM and a 7600 GT and also Windows 7 64 Bit)... Wish me luck...

Hmm, that's something worth noting. Everyone here uses an nVidia card. Maybe that has something to do with it. It's a big shame that I can't finish the game 'cause of some silly VFX. I'll try and work on getting it to work tomorrow.

Okay, I installed Mass Effect 2 on my notebook and was able to complete the mission without any problems. Hopefully, there won't be such problems on the last mission, otherwise I'll have to switch to my notebook again. So, if anyone has this problem and access to another computer, give it a try.

well that sucks, I'm already using a laptop and the lightning effect inside the locked room (with me still in) of an Abandoned Research Station mission crashes whenever i reposition the mirrors.

I'm running fast on max graphics with Win7 64-bit, nvidia Geforce GT 130M, 4GB RAM, and Core 2 Duo T9550 2.66GHz. Gonna slug the graphics to see if that works

lol, turn graphics all the way down. Right when I repositioned last mirror, i looked immediately away and ran to the corner as the lightning beams reactivated. doors unlocked and im free, woo! They need to patch up this graphics issue on the next update. Don't know how many times we can look away and hide when a flash of lightning hits the screen.

I'm having a similar issue at the reaper core. If the camera is looking at it opened or closed everything seems fine, but not during any transition between. I tried to get around this by looking off to the sides and pausing the game before turning the camera to see if the core was open. I actually got it down to half health before I guess I kept the camera on it too long and the game crashed.

I'm also having the trouble on the reaper core, Though i didn't run into the problems with the praetoran's this is the first time i crashed if i remember correctly.

os: Vista
GPU: nVidia 8500 gt(xfx) 512mb
CPU: Pentium 4 duo 3.00GHz
2gig ram

Edit:
If you have it, use the Cain Rifle on the reaper core, you'll one shot it. But make sure to fight the first wave of husks first.  Keep your back to the core during the wave of husks. then equip the cain heavy, and let 'er loose. Love that gun. Reminds me of the BFG

same problem, a lightning effect from either a praetorian, the reaper core, or the mirror puzzle crashes ME2. One thing thats interesting is that the reaper core crashes me 100% of the time, but the praetorian and the puzzle seemed to only have a chance of crashing me. In each of the praetorian battles thus far, i took a few hits without crashing. Would really like this problem resolved.

Same problem: there is a lab experiment with reflective armor going on at the abandoned station and after a while (moving the beams path) the game crashes.

Looks electrical beam yes.

This is some pretty valuable info. I'll test it out when I have the time.

The Cain Rifle does indeed one shot it, thank you.

I backed against the wall, fired at the reaper core, paused. Then looked up at the ceiling behind me, unpaused. Worked like a charm, managed to get through to the cut scene. Also was punching shift the enter time I was focused on the wall, thinking the repeated pausing would somehow interfere with the beam graphics. Hope that helps someone.

I too am having this crash(to the original post) twice earlier when first meeting Jacob in combat, now on the reaper ship on the waves of husks right through to the core fight. Crashes computer has to be manually restarted. cannot read error is set ,not to reboot but the screen is broken up and unreadable. I play in 1900x1080 res maxed settings no film grain. Game progression has grind to a halt.
A little help to use the [code=auto:0] function step by step, would be great so i can post dxdiag in full.

Oh thank god, more than two people have run into this problem. I've got this same problem. Pretty much every other part of the game (Other than Praetorians or the Reaper Core) has worked fine at maxed out settings. The Praetorians aren't much of a problem if you use cover, if you shoot at the thing in between shots, but the Reaper Core is nigh impossible. It seems that if you don't have the Cain Rifle (Or any weapon that doesn't one-shot the core), your pretty much screwed. I'm not sure about it, but it seems that even if the core is off-screen, it'll crash the game.

Allright I've got the technique for getting past this issue, just going to take a while to do it properly. The lightning effects are what killing everyone, this is fairly obvious as the same issue occurs with the Praetorians, which appear to use the same effect. Here's the simple steps to take:

1) Equip a Heavy Weapon with a fairly high clip, or something like the Cain Rifle which can one-shot the core,.I'm using the Collector Beam myself.

2) Make sure you have fairly high ammo on your Heavy Weapon. (200 or more with the Collector Beam seems to be good)

3) When you hear the core start to open up, look straight at the cieling until you notice that it is open. Then shoot it as much as you can. When the doors shut closed on it, look back up and run from any husks that may be in your way.

4) Repeat until Core is destroyed.

i managed to get past this part with only a few tries. The key that i noticed is that if you focus on killing the husks that spawn in between the core opening and closing, the core will open unbeknownst to you and will stay open until you take down one third of the health.

What I did is look at the ground and walk towards the core, and wait a few seconds while looking at the ground. Move to the back where the two ramps are and have your teammates cover one ramp while you cover the other. If you don't look at the core or at the door you came in through, you won't see any lightning effects, and the core will be open by the time the husks stop respawning. Then I just hit the core with my assault rifle and used adrenaline rush when it got near 2/3 and 1/3 and 0 health. As soon as it showed signs of doing something immediately look down and repeat until dead.

but who knows if theres another part in the game where we'll all be stuck with no hope of not seeing the lightning

Update: more crashes now on legion mission after cinematic on interacting with the window in the corridor, i enter the next room gun holstered and get the same violent crash, obviously bsod but so fractured i can not read the error.
might be time to wait for a patch, not healthy for my rig with all these restarts, such ashame.
:(
Update2: game is unplayable due to constant crashes in the finale
This IS a driver issue my rig is now crashing in any 3Dprogram violently using physX since updating to new nvidia drivers! (issue is not resolved by rolling back)
, get those drivers fixed boys.
