I am also having this problem. Whenever there are lightning effects in view the game crashes and I am forced to restart:

Same problem. When the camera zooms in on the core to show it's armor effect/before the fight begins...I always crash. My computer reads as a 5, which is the recommended settings for ME2. I shouldn't be having these kinda problems.

Same issue, during the abandoned ship, the last mirror crashed my game... I pray hope this issue is fixed soon, as this is my latest save, and a lot of my progress would be lost if it doesn't get fixed.

Edit:
Should rename this to Electrical effects causing crashes (Electric beam on abandoned space station, and the derelict reaper ship core).
And the current temp solution is to play in windowed mode from what most people are saying.

i usually played with 1440x900 with full screen with everything on...but i never had the crashing problem till i got to the part where i have to blow up the reaper core.
after countless amounts of attempts to get past it i finally found the solution for my laptop(Qosmio X305-701)...i dont know if it will work for everyone...but this is what i did.
on the reaper core part...i turned off Phys-X on the Nvidia Control panel. Then i set the game to Windowed mode, then i turned all the effects off like Bloom effect and shadows and everything else below it. and i turned the resolution down one from where i usually play.
when i got to the part where i had to blow up the core...i killed all the husk that got in my way. and as soon as the core opened up, i fired the Cain Rifle with my back towards the door i came in. as soon as i shot it, i turned around to face the door away from the core before it actually hit the core. i had to skip the scene after the core blowing up because when i tried to watch it, it too crashed my laptop...=( but i dont care about the scene as long as i got through to the next part! now time to finish the game! i hope that helps someone! Good luck to the rest of you all...BioWare isn't doing anything about this issue...so i guess we have to figure it out ourselves.

Had the same issue in the abandoned station running 1440*900 full screen. Switched to 1360*768 windowed and had no trouble.

It ran flawlessly when I went into the options and turned off some of the graphics effects.
It's the only spot in the whole game that acts up. I turned off the film grain and lighting option.
I turned them back on after the core and now I'm getting ready for the last mission. Stocking up on upgrades and such.

I posted about this one a while back but, couldnt find the thread again to post how i got around it. The praetoriaqns you have to stay at a distance far enough from em so the beam weapons don't fire. Sadly the graphics options down work on this mob on my second play thru and it just nuked me even with all settings off.
However in the reaper core if you set all of your graphics settings to off/whatever it is, you should be able to kill the core and get past it with no problems, i didnt want to reload and test that theory though as i didnt want to risk it being a fluke. Thats the only way i was able to get past that area after 4 or 5 crashes in a row.

I'm having this issue aswell. Trying to kill the second praetorian I've come across. The first I crashed roughly 6 times before I finally managed to take it out. This one seems practically impossible because I can't find anywhere to get far enough away from it to get a clean shot where it's blue beam is not facing me. I haven't even gotten to the damn reaper core : (

I just updated my drivers .. going to go try again. Not much hope though.

Turn the other three mirrors first and get them in position then use the computer on the far right once. The second you turn the last computer, turn around and face away.

I got around it by opening the video options in configure and switching everything to "off". Didn't bother doing it properly to find what was specifically causing the issue and random, non-repeating crashes still occur but this particular issue was resolved. Might work for other laser issues?

don't know if yall had same problem as me getting into the core room but i had to hit adrenaline rush to be able to open the door. Game would not crash but i could not select any item either door or the wall safe if i just walked up to the door. I had the same issue most are having regarding the research station so wonder if same issue...

I think there is a high chance that the crashes are linked with the graphics card. I'm also using a nvidia graphics card too and my crashes are very random other then selected scenes. When I installed the game and ran it with the default graphics settings for the first time, the game hanged in the introduction where Miranda was walking through one of the Illusive man's screen. I lowered the settings and was finally able to get pass without a hang but now it hangs during the first explosion in the old Normandy. Only when I set it to the lowest, other then the High Quality Bloom, that I was able to continue with the game.
Since then I have random hangs when I play the game, some examples include when I was doing the Mordin mission, random location and mission on Illium. When it does hang I had to resort to a quick ALT+Tab and CTRL+ALT+DEL combo to try to salvage the situation and if successful I can continue with a chance that it'll hang again along the way. If it fails, its either my com auto restarts, blue screen of death with an error code indicating graphics driver failure or a snowing effect on the screen both in and out of game.
Even with a lowered setting I still get an almost 100% hang during the end game cine-graphics at the exact time and scene every single time. Good thing there is an autosave option so I don't have to replay the end mission again if it hangs. =P
I've tried updating my graphics driver, even uninstall and did a roll back to an older driver but it doesn't help. Below is my system info:
OS: Window Vista Home Premium 32-bit
Service Pack 2
Processor: Intel® Core i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz 2.67Ghz
Memory (RAM): 3.00GB
GPU: nVidia GeForce GTX 285
Driver: 196.21
Hope the Dev team has picked up this trend of nvidia cards crashing.

Hello...Seems that if i disable dynamic shadows and light environment shadows and have everything else as normal, then at least the reaper core part of the game does not crash. If I have even one of those settings enabled, it will crash almost immediately. This is under Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit, with wine and the latest nvidia drivers available to me. Even though it's not windows, it still suffered crashes in the same places as everyone else, making it a driver issue across both systems. Hope this helps someone.
I'd just like to say that this game is a huge contrast stability wise compared to the first mass effect. might have something to do with the fact that bioware ported the game from console to pc in the case of me2, whereas in number one's case, Demiurge did the port.

I'm getting a random crashing issue as well, and it only seems to be after I got the Kasumi DLC.. I beat the game fine without a single crash before but after Kasumi I've had two crashes in as many days.
First crash was at Donovan's mansion, second crash at Freedom's Progess (created new game).
I don't see a link since the first crash was essentially non-combat.
Quick info :
XP (SP3)
Athlon 64 X2 4200+ 2.21 Ghz
3GB RAM
Radeon 4850 1Gb
I forget which driver version I'm using but it can't be older than Jan's version.. I think..

I got my first crash on abandoned reaper, a whole mess of husks nearby I hit one of the abominations and at the same time the scion opened up. With all the junk on screen at once the game just crashed.
Reloaded and did the same area just fine, didn't let the abomination get so close and kept the scion at a distance.
Later the same level, in the reaper core I could look inside just fine, it wasn't until the core was open at the same time as I blew up another abomination that the game instantly froze.
I can stare inside the core just fine and fight scions just fine, praetorians just fine. Its only when I try to do them at the same time as abominations are blowing up that the risk of crashing occurs. Abominations on their own with husks are fine too, but I know a crash is entirely possible when the scions come to play (or we're toasting marshmellows by the reaper core).
I'm using an nvidia 9600m, windows 7 64bit.

This always happens to me at the station when doing the lightning puzzle. And secondly doing Legion's loyalty mission and fighting back the waves of geth. What I do in those instances is turn my resolution down to 800x600 until the offending dangerous area has passed.
Graphics card is GeForce GTX 280.
