I'm looking to upgrade my existing 9800GX2 that I've had for two years now. It's about time and I'm tired of the freezing problems the GX2 has.

I'm looking at picking up the BFG GTX 295 sometime next week. It's the fastest single card out there now so I think it's a wise purchase. Plus with just 3 fans I don't have sufficient cooling for SLI. The only thing that gives me pause is the thought of just waiting for the GTX 300 series to be announced but at this point NVIDIA has not announced a street date yet and I'm an impatient kid in a candy store when it comes to buying new GPUs.

The fastest single card is a Radeon 5870 followed by a Radeon 5850.  You can get a 5850 for about 300 bucks.  I'm on a GTX 260 right now, the OC Maxcore variety and it is a nice card but if I were going to get a new card today I'd get the 5850.

When the new 300 series comes out from NVidia, those will top ATI but at the moment, ATI is on top.

How does the GTX295 compare to the 5870 in benchmarks? I couldn't find a head to head comparison in the quick Google search I did.

Looking at the 5870's specs I don't see how it's the fastest card seeing how it has 1 GB GDDR5 memory compared to the GTX 295's 1.7 GB. Even though it has only GDDR3 memory.

You know what though...I might be wrong. Check out this article:

The ones I really look at are the Crysis benchmarks.

I'm impressed the 5870 pretty much equaled the 295. For about $100 cheaper you can't go wrong with the 5870.

What do you think about the Radeon 5970 with it's 2 GPUs meshed into one card?

I think I'm gonna go for the ATI Radeon HD 5970. Only $100 more than the GTX 295 and it blows it out of the water. The benchmarks weren't even close.

If you are playing at at least 2560 x 1600, a 5790 makes sense, otherwise its a waste of money and power.

Actually right now I've got a 1920x1200 Samsung. But I'm impressed by the Crysis benchmarks.
