Took me 3 attempts with different dialogue options, but I finally managed it. It's definitely possible.

You should be fine if it's that close to full. Around the end choose the middle option and then the full paragon option and you should be okay.

Yes you can, did it last night. One of the dialogue options leads you to believe that you are kicking him off of the team, it's a ruse.
