The thing I loved most in Dragon Age was that I could wander around for hours doing side missions, side quests, companion missions and I didn't feel like the forced progression choices tied my hands.  The final moment of the game was pretty obvious and you could still opt to finish other things you had going on without negatively impacting the game.

The blight waited... why can't the collectors?  I was kinda irked that I got shoved into a situation that TIM found a collector ship disabled and you couldn't do anything else.  I dealt with it after realizing IFF is the trigger point to "the end".

Solution: Why not just salvage the IFF and then have it on board?  You get to decide when to install it.  When you DECIDE to install it to your ship that is the moment your ship is attacked (maybe set up some distress beacon that TIM intercepts and you fly there to investigate and BOOM).  At least in this way the destination is preset and the abduction of the crew won't happen UNTIL you're enroute to that beacon.

I can appreciate the concept of time continuously moving, but I didn't like being forced into that situation.  I had hoped to be able to continue wandering around the galaxy exploring doing side quests and everyone's loyalty lines before being forced into Omega 4.  I realize I can take as long as I want to go to Omega 4, but I'm a Paragon.  You'd think the longer I took the more Renegade points I'd have ticking on my bar knowing that people are dying the longer I take....

Oh you and the collectors can wait all you want. Can't say the same thing for your crew though...

I don't understand the argument. There is no forced progression before the IFF mission. So don't do it until you are ready. Also, if you get Legion's loyalty mission, it takes you out the trigger. You can then do whatever wandering you want, and then do Legion's quest, and you will be back to the main story.

Look at it from a RP perspective. Your crew has just been captured. If you go around doing willy nilly around the galaxy, what do you think is going to happen?

Remember that Dragon Age occurs over the course of one year, so RP-wise it is logical that you can wander around anywhere in Ferelden. Mass Effect likely happens over the course of a month or two.

All righty, I'll just not do the IFF mission for a while.  I guess I made the mistake of reading some of the hype.  People are implying you can only do like 2 missions after IFF or something and that didn't sit well with me.  Gave me the impression that more open up after that and you cannot reasonably complete all of them.

I'll go back to my corner until I finish :)

Unless you skipped out of A LOT of side quests beforehand, which in-turn is your falult, I dont see how you are really forced into anything, by the time I got to the Reaper IFF I had all(or 99%) of the side-missions done and all exploration at 100%.

I have read this as well. People are getting confused about where and when this occurs. Once you acquire Legion's loyalty quest, until you do it, you are free to do whatever you wish.

As you say, that safest way to avoid issue is to do your wandering before the IFF. But I was able do all of my remaining N7 missions, and finish buying all by upgrades, after finding the IFF, but before triggering the next sequence on the story missions.

Ahh so that's the trigger/pause then? Legion's loyalty mission? Good to know! Means I can take him to the Flotilla for Tali's mission so long as he's given me his too.

I'll give that a go!

I think you can't get the IFF mission until you've done Tali's loyalty mission...but I could be wrong

So basically, I can do anything I want until acquiring Legion's loyalty mission? Just want to know If I understood this correctly.

After I recruited Samara (and was put back on the Normandy) TIM contacted me and told me about the collector ship floating in Space.  It forced me to go check it out.  It wouldn't let me explore the galaxy map until I talked to TIM and then when I talked to TIM he dumped me on that ship.  At that point I hadn't recruited Thane or Tali.  I've done a lot of "Anomly missions" and apparently those count toward a set progression to unlock some plot points (even without a full squad yet)

Once I completed that collector ship it gave me the IFF mission and I picked every dialogue option that said "NOT YET, keep recruiting my team."

I haven't even snagged Tali yet for my team and don't have an option to recruit Legion yet (think I have to recruit Tali first) and the IFF mission is there for me to do.

I chose an Adept main so I haven't even seen the tech class yet.

You can do anything you want until you do the "Acquire Reaper IFF" mission. Then you have to activate Legion, and get his loyalty mission, and then you can keep doing things. If you don't activate him and get the mission, then you are stuck.

Was it possible to save the crew? I only got three. I miss the rest. I failed.

It is but to do it you have to pretty much go through the relay right after the Normandy gets attacked.

Wasnt the Freedom's Progress mission forced after you recruited a certain amount of squad members? I seem to remember that pissing me off.

Ugh, nope. Freedom's Progress is the 1st mission you get after joining forces with Cerberus.

Horizon is the first place you engage the Collectors.

Horizon. Yea, its "forced" as it'll trigger once you've completed all the "main plot" quests you have at the time. If you prefer to run around and do side quests before Horizon, just wait with recruiting the last Squad Member.

It would be a bit weird if it wasn't forced though..

TIM: "Shepard! The Collectors are attacking right now!"

Shepard: "Ok! I'll just go help this old lady get her purse, mine some planets, and go kill some mercs. After that, I'll be right over to stop them!"

Horizon was actually neccessary for plot progression. As you can't recruit your full team until you finished Horizon.

I think forced progression is one of the good things Bioware chose to implement - too many times in RPG's you are facing impending doom / seeking revenge etc but can take your sweet old time - it isnt realistic in the slightest.

The only one that felt 'forced' was the collector ship.

Horizon activates after you finish up the last of Mordin, Garrus, Jack and Grunt.

You can do the Reaper IFF anytime after that activates, you can also go through the Omega-4 relay whenever you want (With rightful consequences for delaying).
