I think forced progression is one of the good things Bioware chose to implement - too many times in RPG's you are facing impending doom / seeking revenge etc but can take your sweet old time - it isnt realistic in the slightest.

Agreed completely.  I always found it a bit ridiculous that in ME1 you're supposedly having this 'race against time', yet you have time to stop and do all of the Alliance's little missions that aren't really your responsibility anymore.

This form of 'forced progression' felt perfect.  When the sense of urgency was necessary, it was enforced.  The main plot still was open enough to allow you the time to finish all of your exploration and side quests, while still not having these threats with a narrow window of time unrealistically placed on hold until you feel like doing them.

I don't understand the argument. There is no forced progression before the IFF mission. So don't do it until you are ready. Also, if you get Legion's loyalty mission, it takes you out the trigger. You can then do whatever wandering you want, and then do Legion's quest, and you will be back to the main story.

Wait, legions mission takes you out of the trigger? Is this true? I was unable to get all of legions dialogue my first playthrough because i did every mission in the game before going to get iff. This could really be useful if it is true.

You do know you can play all side missions after the suicide mission as long as you survive right?

I don't  know about the trigger; the way I always do it is to take Legion on Tali's loyalty mission after IFF, after which Legion will tell you about his loyalty mission, and leave 3 or 4 N7 missions til after the Omega 4 relay. For the purposes of triggering new dialogue, the Omega 4 mission counts as a trigger, and the remaining missions will trigger the rest.
