Hi, I've been playing Mass Effect for several hours without issue, but every time I try to dock to the prison ship for the 'Recruit the Convict' mission I get stuck on the loading screen, the sound cuts out and eventually I get the old 'Mass Effect 2 has stopped working...' error.
Here are my PC specs:
Intel Q8400 quad core processor,
4GB Corsair DDR2 RAM,
ATI HD 4890 1GB graphics card,
onboard sound.
I would be happy to give any further info, as I'm LOVING this game so far and I'm desperate to get this crash resolved. I've updated my video and sound drivers to the latest versions.
Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to give me.

If it's a consistent crash like this then one possibility is that the movie file that's supposed to play upon your arrival on purgatory is damaged, causing the game to crash everytime it tries to load the file. To figure out whether that's the source of the problem it might be worth trying to load the game with all movies disabled and see if you can get past the point of the crash.
If you open up your mass effect 2 shortcut, and add "-nomoviestartup" (without the quotation marks) at the end of the file path that should disable all movies when you next start up ME2.
If without the movie you don't crash upon entering purgatory you can either save directly afterwards and then remove the tag in the shortcut to reenable the movies, or you can try reinstalling the game and hoping it's just a corrupt .bik file. If you do reinstall, remember to back up your entire Bioware directory under My Documents (to keep saves and achievements).

The -nomoviestartup didn't work for me, but I deleted the Movies folder and verified the files with Steam, which replaced them. It now works, so it was probably a damaged video file. Thanks for your help, Miriel!

I'm using Windows 7 and the -nomoviestartup didn't work cos I couldn't put it on my filepath. Is there anyway around it?

I have a different issue but it's on the same level. When ever I get to place that's holding Jack (The room with the three Ymir mechs). The hallway to the next area the one with the power cells and dead guard is distorted and warped that I can't go on any further. Please help me with this.

Having the exact same problem, in the exact same space as Kragneon001. Did you manage to figure it out in the 9 months since that post?

1) Please register the game on the forums. This is not an accusation, but given the spate of users with illegally downloaded copies coming to the forums asking for help, forum registration is the only way we can be sure we are dealing with a legit copy. Illegally downloaded copies include hacked and modified files which could be either corrupt, or full of malware. Once its registered, we will be happy to help. Forums Registration here;
