DA:O has been designed almost convinently. Questlines, gameplay mechanics, everything about dragon age spells it in my head.
Bioware, is this some kind of secretive conspiracy to create an mmo sequal instead of making a series of dragon age games? Being perfectly honest, it wouldnt surprise many of us...
Im just curious, whats your thoughts on this folks?
It would make a better Big Box Boardgame before it would even be worth making into an MMO that would end up failing anyway. There's not enough difference in the already saturated fantasy market of MMO's and the fan base isn't nearly large enough to justify the development costs.

But MMO's are great fun, especially ones that promote RP with an already existing lore behind them!

- No!
And how many others will play "Maric's other bastard child"? No that sort of content and roleplay is exactly why we play singleplayer games.

Take away the plot, voice acting, companions, etc. and look at the underlying mechanics and engine. There are huge balance problems, an oversimplified class system, sub par graphics and a fairly generic fantasy setting. You could make an MMO but it wouldn't be a very good one.
Right. Plot and companions involved in the plot,.. and one of the big points, IMO, with making a singleplayer party-combat rpg is precisely that you can do an unbalanced class system. Umpteen classes all balanced to play the same is such a bore and so indifferent. A class is much more interesting if it has a place in things. Though, I do not think Bioware have made a good job of it in DA:O, but "huge balance problems" is the least of my complaints.
But as you say, DA:O is in it's current mold very unsuitable for MMO. That doesn't mean the IP/franchise couldn't be used to develop a MMO. But what's the point? Why not come up with a better gameplay idea for MMO's, rather than just try to do the same as Blizzard, and base a MMO on that instead.

make a spin off of a video game series into a mmo, and the series dies off, all you see of said series is a sequal and expansions to said mmo.
This, and the fact that you'd end up with characters named like my username here (or worse, things like XX_SexxyKitten05_XX), and characterization and plot would suffer... yeah, I'd say Dragon Age would be ruined by making it a full MMO. One would assume you'd want a DA MMO to encourage roleplaying, but you'd get the same netspeaking typists begging for handouts as always--and rather than having a good flow of different quests and quest types, you'd be level grinding all the time. Level 25? No, try level 50, with too few quests between levels 15-40 to get leveled up with. Thus the level-grinding and loot-farming.
Example of what you'd see (based on the majority of MMOs I've ever been on):
<XX_SexxyKitten05_XX> can u giv me 200 gp plz
<Marics_Other_Bastard> lol y u need 200 gp? go kill darkspnw
<Amarillis_Cousland> (surprisingly enough, trying to actually roleplay, but the player's character is one of about 500 Cousland "last of their line" characters game-wide) I am off to the Korkari Wilds to slay the dreaded Witch of the Wilds!
<XX_SexxyKitten05_XX> u dont hav 2 do that i killed her last week
<Marics_Other_Bastard> lolol ur lvl 30, y r u killin lvl 20 mobs?
Please, please don't inflict that on DA. Don't inflict the mental image on me. It's simply too painful. I know there are people who'd disagree, of course, but frankly if DA has an MMO sequel, I'll be sitting that one out--and probably the rest of them, because it's quite true that once a game becomes an MMO, the original series dies. Look at Warcraft and Phantasy Star if you are in need of examples.
Now, a multiplayer mode that allows you to invite a few of your friends in on a campaign, or to simply roleplay with them, would be a different matter. I'd welcome that.

I have started to play online on Dark Age of Camelot in april 2002 and i have played it for 3 years. After it i have played for many months also WarHammer online (2008) and i have see also World of
Warcraft but only for some days.
Now i don't play any MMORPG game, no more.
The big limit of MMORPG is the big play time requested to continue to have a competitive character.
It need to be present for different hours any day to participate in missions of group to achieve special items that strengthened notably the character, and more time you play more strong is your player.
This has some consequences:
- Where is your social life ?
- For workers and for all people with family become impossible to follow these rhythms and the game become stressful.
The main objective of a game must be to have a good time but, when the difference between your character and that of the other ones becomes excessive, because of the different gaming time and the different special items, the game experience becomes frustrating.
However i believe in a possible solution. Fundamentally, the game must be a single player game in which all players throw on their characters with some missions and/or expansion playable also online in cooperative mode but without any particular benefit for the characters of participants except a tag or a medal to point out what character has completed this mission.
The cooperative mission must be beautiful for the history and for the difficulty that it represents for the group not for final special items.
In this way the same level characters of the players are always competitive and it is exclusively the ability of the players that determines the success in a mission of group.
Besides, also in player versus player mode is always the ability of the players to determine the winner.
These are only base ideas on which to work.

The Bioware Edmonton team has experience making single player RPGs. I think it will take a while to suddenly learn to make an MMO. And create the new technology and mechanics to suit it.
It would probably take longer to make than a single player sequel. There is probably more financial and creative risk. I don't see the point of it.

Obviously Dragon Age project will continue to produce single player games and content. But in the future (fairly distant future) I would not be surprised to see a dragon age MMO. and I think it would be awesome.
I am an mmo fan because I love the competitive sense that is involved in it, especially pvp driven mmo's. I do also enjoy mmo's with a strong lore such a lord of the rings online.
The dragon age world would make for a wonderful MMO game. and for those of u that don't want it to be an MMO, just don't play the dragon age mmo when it comes out. There will be a trilogy, then there will be an MMO. For those not interested in MMO's, your dragon age journey will end with the trilogy. for those of you with an open mind and who like MMO's your dragon age journey can last forever.

It works in other games, where each side has fluid and rich history among their races. Darkspawn, for the most part, just seem to be mindless footsoldiers. I'd find it hard to RP a character like that.

So my answer is -- since I don't care -- they could, but only if they could do so without in any way shape or form slowing or hindering the development of the single player game I enjoy immensely (mostly because, sadly, single player CRPGs are becoming rarer than axameter encounters). Since that in turn seems unlikely - I say - no.
I know they're working on the KOTOR-based MMO. When I heard about it, I was like.... huh? Isn't there already Star Wars: Galaxies? I never played SW:G, but I understand people ****ed and moaned about how hard it was to become a Jedi in that game. They were supposed to be very rare. Then they made some kind of change to make it easier and sure as rain.... suddenly 50,000 Jedis were running around every server ... and many players left. Now since Bio's MMO is set a few thousand years earlier in the KOTOR timeframe, when there were more Jedis, I assume they also will make it easier to play one. So ... well, dunno, I still see them running into the same problems SW:G did, but we'll see. I know I won't play that one, either.

Although in Sacred 2 while in a party you would gain xp, tho the level cap was 50 there. I think if they had made DAO online playable with others they could have just made it where everyone would get xp and also level while doing the quests that the server creator made. The only thing is after the person leaves the select server of the leader that player would go back to his original level that he was before he entered. Meaning that you can only keep whatever xp and level you gain only when you are the main server creator. Also any items/loot/chests while playing would all go to the main person.
I think it would have been cool to be able to help others and make friends while playing DAO. Maybe the devs will sometime in the future really look into making a DAO some type of MMO playable. I think it could be a big hit if done right.
