You have to run the Configuration utility. When you start the game, don't hit Play. Instead, choose Configure. When the utility comes up, click on the Save Games tab. Click the 'Copy Mass Effect 1 Save Games' button. Navigate to the ME1 save folder in the popup window. For XP that's My Documents-> BioWare -> Mass Effect -> Save (I don't know where Vista or 7 puts it). Choose the Save folder and click on Okay. Nothing will seem to happen, but that will import it to your ME2 game. Fire up the game, hit Play, and you should be able to choose your old character.

You need to have completed ME1 to be able to import your charcter into ME2.
i have done that. I even went back and beat Sovereign again from one of my old saves. And I restarted w/a new game plus. But my Michelle Shepard still isn't there. My two other Shepards are, though. i don't get it.

I have the Xbox360 version and it let me choose my level 41 character and it listed but would not let me choose by level 51 character. Will O have to replay ending of ME1?
Had the exact same problem. Replaying the ending didn't solve it for me. My lone renegade Shepard is still MIA.

... use the d pad, not the analog stick, to select the character... jeez, the damn programmer who created the import utility did it on purpose.
GODS BLESS YOU!
I wasted a lot of time trying to figure out what was wrong with the save game I wanted to select, but couldn't! D-pad worked!

Char_01-54-2-1-0-29-1-2010-22-33.MassEffectSave
Sometimes you don't have it (i didn't have any for my 5-6 characters, don't know why). Even on genuine version of the game (mine is).
If you don't, so you need to fight the final boss again. Just load the latest save (should be an autosave). The file will be created when you finish the game again

This fix did not work for me. I loaded my last save, beat Sovereign again and my Char_.... file still did not generate for this Shepard. This worked for you, daguest? Where did you start from?
Frustrating.

It's not very intuitive, but here's what you do:

I've got Vista

I don't know if this matters, but I think my lvl 41 Shep didn't plat the any of the DLC, but my lvl 51 did the Bring down the Sky
out of curioustiy, what is the filename of that save, mine is jazzmine00_Autosave.MassEffectSave and Mathias00_21save.MassEffectSave(what is "00" supposed to be?) is that what your PC said? Mine doesn't read in the ME2 import roster. some have had it read like this "Char_00_32" but how Fkdup is that? should be first name(or John/jane) followed by 00 or _00 which? both mine did Bring Down the Sky and this will infulence my plan to buy "Pinacle Station" or any other addon

I opened the configure tool and I to have no "Save Game" Tab <----XP Professional. I just barely killed Sovereign last night and I cannot import her over to ME2. She is a renegade Biotic.
Poorly worded on my part. There's a Save Games option on the left side of the Utility window. There are two small panes on the left side. Upper one is labelled Mass Effect 2 and the lower one is labelled System. Save Games is the bottom of the list in the Mass Effect 2 pane.

Now I would be nervous if I had multiple character profiles....
(also did not download or play any of the DLC, just Mass Effect Vanilla through steam)

Repeating my OP, in hopes that someone has encountered this and has a fix.
What if just one of your old shepards isn't showing up? I had 3 Shepards that had all completed at least one playthrough. Two of them I was able to import just fine. The other won't show up. All the saves were in the same directory but it doesn't appear that the Char_.... file for the one that won't import.
Can anyone help? The missing one is my only renegade. I miss her! lol
