So I'm nearly done with ME2, and unless there's a surprise waiting for me at the end, there's no vehicle driving/gameplay.

That's well and dandy, but I think Bioware had planned to do vehicles pretty far into development.  Take a look at the key bindings screen in the PC version, and scroll down and you'll see a set of controls for vehicle control.

Looks like Bioware took a shot at getting the MAKO sequences right but ultimately decided to ax them altogether.

The Mako is returning in free DLC as the Hammerhead. I'm guessing there were problems with it that prevented it from being in the game as released.
