I was wondering if anyone has tried getting through the whole storyline without using potions (health or lyrium, not poisons and such) on hard or nightmare setting. And whether you have tried or not, what would be the best group build to try?
I was thinking a challenge like this might open up other build possibilities that most people don't use, like shape****er where you would shapeshift when low on mana or health. I know a lot of people have soloed the game but that usually requires a lot of potions, but I think when I'm done with my current group, I might try this because it would really take some strategy.
Has anyone did a playthrough without using potions?

Yes. It's fun--as for optimum group, I don't know. Just so long as you build your group with enough CC and someone has plenty of dexterity to tank, you should be fine. Last time I did it with Shale tanking, this time it has been Alistair. Just killed Ser Cauthrien in my current playthrough. IMO, you're right, playing without potions makes it a lot more interesting because it changes the value of different abilities. Spell might looks a lot less valuable when you can't just chug some mana pots and keep casting, and spells and abilities that grant regeneration are a lot more powerful.

Soloing doesn't require a lot of potions. I just did all of Deep Trenches and Anvil of the Void with a Warrior, and used 4 regular health potions. 3 on the Broodmother fight, because her grab killed me if I wasn't full on health. And 1 in the room with the traps where golems attack you in groups of two. I could have avoided using that potion by playing a bit smarter and planning ahead, but I didn't.
For soloing, potions are only necessary in certain boss fights, like dragons, where there are attacks that deal heavy damage you can't possibly avoid, because they're auto hit etc.

If you're going without potions, why not go without healers, or without mages altogether.
First things first though. You probably want a templar, with 100% spell resist. Magic will dominate you otherwise. You want a reliable way of dealing with it.
The Reaver spec is awesome, for devour.
I'd go with Leliana as a Bard/Ranger, being my only archer. If just for Song of Courage and stealth.
