I am playing as a good Mage. I mainly specialize in Primal/Spirit schools, and I've picked a couple healing spells from the Creation school. I am highly considering taking the Spirit Healer specialization.
I just have a few questions concerning a good party combination. I prefer to be the only mage in the party, and I prefer to only travel with good spirited individuals.
I am thinking Mage(me)/Warrior/Rogue/War Dog or Mage/Warrior/Warrior/Rogue.
What do you guys think?

I haven't used the Dog much, so I cannot comment much on how good that dog is. M/W/W/R Would be good, and I would make one warrior a tank and the other probably a 2-hander. I use M/M/W/R in my party, but I was thinking about using two warriors earlier. I still might once I get shale.

If you are the only mage in the party, you should prolly invest more pts into healing/buffs instead of offense spells.
Anyways,
Mage(You as a healer & if you want abit of disabling like Paralyze/Petrify/CrushingPrison)
Warrior (Tank)
Warrior (2H DPS/Off tank)
Rogue [Duelist DPS or Range(If you take 2H DPS Warrior)]
thats my opinion on this i guess.

Supposedly Shale does much better as a tank than Alistair, so I'd probably do this:
PC, mage, make sure to get hexes to soften up bosses, as well as heals
Shale, war golem, train the defensive/tank line
any of Dog, Oghren, or Sten, melee DPS
rogue if you can't stand locked chests, otherwise another DPS

Shale + Morrigan (dpser) + Wynne (Healer) + Me (Mage, disabler/secondary aoe). Perfect number of magee companions in game

Shale must love that
I'm using myself (mage), Morrigan, Shale and Sten. It makes for some interesting conversations and so far we're crushing everything in our path.

Yes, a shale + 3 mage group sounds awesome, but the OP specifically said he didn't want other mages in the party.

Ooops my bad. Anyways if thats the case i'd suggest:
Mage/Warrior/Shale/Rogue.
If Warrior is your tank, you can spec Shale as ranged or melee DPS (or probably get both) so you can have a mix of range and melee damage sources.
Or as I prefer, you can spec Shale as tank (his tank line has 2 sweet AOE+stun talents). Then you can have a dps/offtank warrior + melee/range rogue. I personally think replacing the warrior with a mage would be a much better option in this scenario but do whatever you wanna do
