Sorry guys this has been bothering me for like an hour now, I downloaded ME2 through Steam overnight and I can't import my saved game file from ME1 without finding the Configuration Utility which should normally just pop up when you insert the disc right?

Well since its through Steam and there is no Disc, I have no idea what to do.

Apologies for the noob question but atleast I hope its a noob question so this can easily be resolved :)
Thankyou.

When you launch the game, it's under Configuration.

There is no Configuration option on my main menu screen(the one with the 2 laptops). How do I get to the main launcher?

I have the Steam version.

For Steam go to Steam->Steamapps->Common->Mass Effect 2->Binaries. You'll see the configuration .exe in there. Just double click to run it.

also if u launch the game via the my games tab in steam it asks if u want to launch mass effect 2... use the launcher... or view the documentation... if u choose the launcher u have one click access to all the configuration and import tools... without even finding the folders.. etc.. this is much easier for people who are not very familiar with windows

I tried this, found the config utility and tried to use it but it is still telling me that it can't find my save files.

Once I get to the config, I go to the tab on the left that says "Save Games" and then click on the "Copy Mass Effect 1 Save Games" button in the larger main area. I then locate my Mass Effect 1 Save game file directory and hit "Ok". Then I go to the Mass Effect 2 tab at the top and save the change. I exit the config and restart the game. But when I try to import my mass effect 1 game....it STILL says it cannot locate the saves.

What am I missing!?!

By default in Documents -> BioWare -> Mass Effect -> Save

Can't get this to work either. This is very frustrating. I have the save file, and I know the saved games are in that file but the config tool just doesn't see them.

It's insane that bioware didn't stream line this process.

I am curious how many people in general have this problem with the ME1 transfer with steam.

I'm also firing blanks on this issue. I've tried all the above methods, no dice to all. I echo Bacon's disbelief. This is stupidly complex, especially since the 360 import process was so solid.

I've got the same problem, too.

Even more, because the ME2-launcher does not work at all (Error: Switch from current encoding to specified encoding not supported. Line 1, Column 40 inter xml settings.).

When I try to start the MassEffect2Config.exe itself I get the same error message.

I would transfer the "Save" of ME1 by hand if I knew, where to put it.

I believe it's (by default):
C:\\\\\\\\Users\\\\\\\\"user name"\\\\\\\\Documents\\\\\\\\BioWare\\\\\\\\Mass Effect 2\\\\\\\\Save\\\\\\\\ME1

make sure that you copy the "Char_" into that folder and then it should work.

Alright, For anyone else who had as much trouble with this as I did let me make this easy.

Go into your documents-Bioware-Mass Effect- and copy your save folder. Next your going into your documents-bioware-mass effect 2-save and paste the folder you just copied and rename it ME1... Hope this helps someone

C:\\\\\\\\Program Files (x86)\\\\Steam\\\\\\\\SteamApps\\\\\\\\common\\\\mass effect 2\\\\\\\\Binaries

This is for windows 7 steam users

C:\\\\Users\\\\*username*l\\\\Documents\\\\BioWare\\\\Mass Effect

Windows 7 users in general find this in start menu

Note replace C as needed with drive letter

Click "saved games" and point it to c:\\usr\\*yourname*\\my documents\\bioware\\mass effect 1\\saves\\

Then close the program, run ME2, click new game, click import.

the path is Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect\\Save

It doesn't save them in the Steam apps folder with the rest of the game data
