When I try to open the game it crashes. I can open the launcher, but when I click play the screen goes black and I get a generic windows error "Mass Effect 2 has stopped working" window. If I try to run it in windowed mode I see it pop on the windows taskbar and it disappears without showing any window. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

My Specs:
Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit
4 Gigs of ram
Nvidia 8800 GTS
Intel Q6600

Ditto... Installed, registered, checked configuration settings, go to play and initial screen changes, blackness, crash. Still waiting to see the game.

Found the solution to my issue at least. The install can't handle machines with two DVD drives for some reason. I disabled the 2nd drive in Windows Device Manager, then installed and the game worked fine after that.

I don't even get the black screen, but "Impossible to start correctly the application (0xc000007b). Clik OK to close the application." - translated from italian -

Tried everything I could possibly imagine but no luck.

Yep, found the same issue. I thought it strange the install opened up my second drive instead of the current drive at the time.

I just stated my findings in a similar thread:

Ok, I verified the issue for my end on two different systems. Installing the game from 2 separate DVD drives (i.e. one DVD in each drive) will cause the game to not load.

That probably is my problem then. I do have two drives in my system. I'll try re-installing when I get home next. I can't believe there is a bug like this with the install. Most computers I know have more than one drive. Bioware needs to fix this ASAP

I have the same problem! The black screen with the generic "windows is looking for the solution..." but I downloaded it from Steam.

It's been three or four days since I bought the game and still no solution??

They should've tried playing the game before distributing it -_-

I found two general solutions for this problem. First is...

Delete your BioWare/Mass Effect 2 documents in "Documents" on C:/ (Windows Vista), but before this copy your save is safe place. Then launch the game, let Mass Effect 2 make again files id your "Documents" and paste there old save file.

Second is only for PC with dwo DVD drivers. Uninstall your Mass Effect 2 and also files in "Documents/BioWare/Mass Effect 2. Then disable one of your DVD Driver in control panel. In instalation use only one Driver. Should work... for some people.

In my case ( http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/106/index/848551 ) first solution did not work. Now I am trying second... Hope Simon, hope.

Sorry for my english

Thanks a lot szymon! Deleting ME2 document folder seems to work for me. Although, I dare not to move the old saves back in.

Hey all

Had the same problem - tried deleting the ME2 folder and this worked. I had a little peek though and it looks like the issue's with the Player1.prf file in BIOGame\\\\\\\\Profile... copying the original back into the new folder brought the issue back. The original (and I assume corrupted) has a filesize of 0b - the newly created file was 474b.

Copied my saves back as well and only the Restart Mission one seems to be working, the other two won't load and say "Unknown Location" in the description on the load screen. Also since I'm guessing the Player1.prf file had all this in it I've lost all the achievements. Got a bad feeling they're gone for good too since the old prf file seems to be 0b :/

Problem started just after I'd done Zaaed's mission and then wandered round the ship a bit - quit it for a break and the came back to the error. Might be something to do with the profile not saving properly on quitting or something?

Running Win7 Home 64bit, Intel i5 750, 4Gb Ram, ATI 5770 1Gb.

I have the game on disks and have installed 3 times. I believe that bioware should make a patch for this as my laptop plays DragonAge perfectly, although it does crash every now and again (i.e.: every hour or so). I have no idea what to do, and so will be waiting for each and every patch. The other thing that I'll do is see if I can get a better graphics card.
