Hardened gives damage resistance while in use, Heightened increases slowdown effect.

It really depends on how you play. If you are tactical in your approach to a battle, and like to take stock of the field before popping adrenaline rush to rattle off 4 headshots, get heightened. It actually provides an incredible offensive boost since you are firing at the same speed with time slower. Also, if you are able to side strafe while doing this, you can easily avoid enemy fire completely.

If you love to storm in, shotgun blazing and pop adrenaline rush in order to down 2 enemies and target a third before the rush runs out, obviously hardened is a better option, as it provides more survivability.

Personally, I love heightened. Easily strafe away from enemy fire, take no damage and down 4 enemies. Cakewalk.

I think there is more difference between Heightened and Hardened AR than meets the eye.
It seems like Heightened AR also imparts an additional damage bonus, and it's not a trivial one.

I say this because I just made the jump from lvl 3 to lvl 4 (Heightened) last night, and it sure seems like I am dropping enemies faster than before.  That is to say, it takes fewer shots from my assault rifle to drop an enemy in Heightened AR than in lvl 3 AR.  If the only difference was the time dilation % (50 vs. 70), this shouldnt be the case.

Has anyone else noticed this?

I may experiment with this tonight by respeccing back to lvl3 AR, count the shots it takes to drop an enemy, then go back to lvl4 (Heightened) and repeat.  I may also do the same thing with Heightened vs. Hardened.

You need heightened if you want to beat it on insanity haha.

Pop that and you can kill the last boss stage 1 in one volley. It's basically...freeheadshots..

Pop it, go up, shoot at heads, go down. Before they even know WTF happened, you're already waiting for it to cooldown and go again.

I never really saw a reason to go past level 3 for AR. Sure heightened slows down time even more, but not enough to justify the 4 point cost. Hardened only applies 50% health damage reduction, and if your down to just your health and out in the open your doing something wrong.

I think only putting 1 point in AR is a valid strategy, only the cooldown time is reduced and the soldier does not have that many skills that are not toggles. The only ones apart from bonus skills is AR and Concussive shot.

roughly:

50% slowdown means you're doing 2x regular damage while AR is on
70% slowdown means you're doing 3.(3)x regular damage

it means 65% damage difference in these 5 seconds between regular and heightened AR. And since you can use AR very often that amounts to huge overall damage boost. Well worth these points, imo.

Yes, your damage per second (relative to your enemies) should go up because of the slowdown, but I think there is more to it than that.

Since I am dropping enemies in fewer shots (or so it seems) at lvl4 than lvl3, that means each shot is also dealing more damage.  I suspect there is a hidden weapon damage bonus in there as well.

As I said, I need to test this to be sure.

I'd like to hear your observations while playing Insanity. How does the typical tough fire fight differ with various levels of AD?

I'm pretty sure I prefer hardened. Boosting the slowdown to 70% felt like I was getting less bullets off in the duration.

I started with heightened and it felt like I wasn't getting as much out of the power in terms of total bullets fired and I didn't need the extra help with accuracy. I changed my ability over to hardened once I was able to and enjoyed the change. Hardened lets you get a little rambo as well and if you do happen to get caught in the open with your shields down it makes it easy to get to safety.

I was on my first playthrough on hardcore difficulty.

I never really understood the point of harden, since with heighten you can actually dodge bullets while headshotting people, And 0 is a much better mitigation in damage that what harden gives you.

I should have noted that my observations are based on playing Veteran, I have not played insanity yet.

I did not get a chance to do the direct comparison between lvl3 and 4 yet, hopefully tonight.

I went with hardened, the time dilation was already slow enough for me. The damage reduction helped me shoot longer before heading back into cover.

*Edit: my soldier plays on insanity.

I go with Hardened if I want to bust out a close combat weapon like shotgun or assault rifle. Heightened if I want to stay in one spot and shoot targets with a sniper rifle although an Infiltrator is much better.

Hardened. It just gives more tactical options. I beat the game on Insanity and it allowed me to move freely without being too afraid of exposure.
