2. Mordin
3. Joker
Anyway, I would really like a male romance option with Mordin. We need more fast-talking scientists to inspire brain activity and make us laugh. Maybe it's just the Rodney McKay withdrawal I've been suffering through since Stargate Atlantis wasn't renewed for another season. In some ways I like just being chummy with the crew people and never getting to have a ME romance--it allowed me to appreciate conversations with characters like Tali and Wrex.
But... Now that Garrus and Tali are both romanceable in ME2 (which I am grateful for), I feel excluded. If they had the time to make Kelly and Jack and Samara into love interests, was it really due to time constraints that they said there would be no M/M romance option toward the end of September? And regardless of what a certain uncomfortable Polish voice actor has said, why should we be in the dark about the M/M question when so much else has been revealed? I've been browsing online and looking for new insights into this each morning, but I've seen nothing yet. I am hoping it won't be Zaeed (ugly man) if anyone.
Also, why are the gay male romance options always bisexual? That gets old pretty quickly. Zevran really came off as omnisexual (much moreso than, say, Captain Jack Harkness in Torchwood, who was omnisexual but who pretty much always came off as gay), like when he says something to the effect of "to be honest, I prefer to sleep with a voluptuous woman, but I can appreciate hotness all across the board" when you're still warming him up with dialogue. He had me recoiling in horror when I really should have been rolling my eyes. He's not gay--he's just really promiscuous.
The problem with characters like Zevran (whom I adore, despite myself) is that it squashes the value that a gay romance would have for anyone interested by making it entirely about sex, or "blowing off steam." Even though he opens up to you if you progress with him and you can feel a little less cheap by the time you're through--it really spits in the face of the real struggles that gay people face in society every day.
Think about it. Why do straight guys sometimes indulge in romance dialogues in these games? If the number of girls you can pick from in ME2 is any indication, the straight people are interested. Sometimes it's just fun or because there can be achievements associated with it, but I am willing to bet that plenty of RPG fans are single and lonely, and that virtual interaction with pretty, fictional girls might take the edge off a bit for them.
Gay guys have to deal with stuff like that, too, only twofold. Whenever I see a really handsome man and want to introduce myself, I have to first think, "He's way out of my league" before I even get to berrating myself with questions like "Is he even gay? Is he homophobic? Is it worth bothering if I could potentially experience rejection and/or physical harm?" The same insecurities are there, and the chance at living vicariously through Shepard in a role-playing game might appeal to some gay teens, especially.
As for me, I live with my boyfriend of five years. We've been dating so long that we're used to one another, so hooking up with Zevran in DA:O was a welcome break from the monotony of my faithful relationship. Besides, my boyfriend found Zevran hilarious, and it was nice that such an important aspect of myself was reflected in the character I was shaping.
At this point, my Shepard is remaining alone. He's starting to seem like Major Bill Keene in A&E's version of The Andromeda Strain. Male Shep seems a lot like someone still living in the closet. He's been restricting himself for so long that he's lost the ability to feel things.
So yeah, there's my rant for today. I want a gay love interest in my Mass Effect, and someone ordinary--not an exotic libertine like Zevran or a free spirit like Sky. Just a normal, grumpy guy who makes sarcastic jokes with you and has useful abilities. Romancing an alien in this setting would almost be perfect because it could help the writers control their libidinous leanings long enough to create a thoughtful companionship. Mordin could really work there. Garrus is also tempting because in the dialogue with FemShep, he kept talking about how he was attracted to her personality rather than her body. That could work with ManShep, too, I think.
It would even just help for teenagers to see a gay man shown in a positive light, someone who is a person before he's a homosexual. I know the game is rated M, but I'm sure many players are younger than eighteen--besides, even gay men could do with a reminder that gay characters need not be reduced to minstrels (in leather instead of blackface) to have any voice at all in pop culture. Zevran is cool for people like me, but his character only detracts from the real visibility that gay people have been working toward for decades.
This is unproofread, so please pardon any awkward wording or spelling mistakes. For those interested in playing a M/M romance, I am interested in your thoughts.
