Using DLC while offline

Unfortunately, I do not have a viable way to connect my 360 to my router/modem. So when I had recieved my codes for the DLC I went over to my friends house and while I was there I connected my 360 to his network. I downloaded all the DLC (initially using his Xbox, but then migrated the licenses onto my Xbox) and played for a while. However, when I got home I was not able to load my previous save. I got an error something like, "The following DLC content is unavailable: Zaeed, Normandy Crash Landing." When I went back to his house the next day (yay for no more exams/long weekend) I made sure it wasn't any licensing issues. I connected my Xbox 360 with the hard drive and connected to Xbox Live. When I went to load my save, it worked. Puzzled, I went back to the Xbox dashboard, unplugged the ethernet cable and started the game again. It did not load my save and I was given the same message as earlier. So now I turn to you, ME Tech Help. Is there anyway for me to use the DLC without being connected to Xbox Live?

im not tech help..but i can venture a guess.

like any game with a dlc offering, once you download the dlc and start making savegames with that dlc in the game world - you cannot go back. your savegame is 'locked' to having that dlc. try borrowing your friends hard drive (where the content is)

I'm sorry if I did not explain it properly. I went to my friends house with my Hard Drive, and Xbox (to avoid licensing issues) and connected my Xbox with my hard drive to his network. I then proceeded to download the DLC and do perhaps two missions on my previous save file with the new DLC content. Now that I am home, I cannot use these save files because I get an error saying I don't have the DLC content that is required for this save. However, I DO have it, and I am wondering why it won't work. I am assuming It's because I am not connected to Xbox Live. When I was at my friend's house I could use the DLC on my Xbox with my hard drive, the only thing that was different was that I was connected to the network/Xbox Live.

Edit: found this thread and was wondering if the same applied to ME2?

Unfortunately, that Microsoft's DRM (Digital Rights Management) policy.

When you download something, it is tied to:
1.) The original Xbox 360 it was downloaded on.
2.) The gamertag is was downloaded on.

So, when playing on the original Xbox 360, anyone can use that DLC, whether online or off.
If you use the gamertag on a different console, you must be signed into XBL with that GT to access the content. (Swapping hard drives has no bearing on this, only the console).

Microsoft did this so people can't make one gamertag download a bunch of premium content, then let all their friends borrow said GT and download that content for free. Granted, it screws over the legitimate buyers, but that's how it is.

My Suggestion:
1.) Take your console to your friends house.
2.) Follow these instrucions. (note, you can only use this tool once a year.)
3.) Profit!

Edit: Just read your new post (effectively making all of wht I just posted worthless, lol), apparently other people are also having this issue. They can only access the Mass Effect 2 content while connected to Live, reguardless if they are using the same console they downloaded it on.

That was actually my first mistake, and I corrected it. When I had the chance to go back to his house I migrated the licenses and everything was working on my Xbox. I was at his house, playing Mass Effect 2 on my Xbox 360, with my hard drive, on my GT and connected to Xbox Live. When I disconnected Xbox Live (I wanted to test if that would be a problem) it would not allow me to load my saves and gave me a message saying the Zaeed and Normandy Crash Site DLC was not installed.

edit: I read on the thread that I posted earlier that it is a server side problem, and I would appreciate if it could be patched in the future for the people who are unable to use Xbox Live ;).

I am having the same problem. My situation is exactly the same. Downloaded all dlc at a friends house with my xbox. I can play fine there, but as soon as I unplug from the network it says my dlc is corrupt. So I now can not play my brand new game in my own home. This confuses me since what I downloaded was "downloadable content" and NOT "streaming content" so I do not understand why I would need xbl to play.

Is there any solution to this? Or at least one in the works, because for anyone in this situation who would like to play the game they just paid for this is a MAJOR issue and is quite infuriating!!

This is actually a EA/Bioware issue that started with Dragon Age and it seems they never learnt there lesson. "The DLC offerings" aren't really DLC it's just there way in tackling the pirated and used game markets. But... the way they have it set up is you have to be connected to live (and EA's servers) continuously when you have created a DLC save game. This also means if you started up the save and then disconnect from live the game will restart, WITHOUT SAVING or give you the chance to save, which in my books is a very bad and sloppy of them. As in my case this happened when my connection got drained by the other users on my internet and the xbox decided to sign me out of live and then ME2 stopped the game and forced me to restart.

There is no resolve for the issue or at least EA/Bioware don't want to comment on there decision to ignore the thousands of players who don't have live or ability to connect to the internet with their xbox. This issue is more then likely to continue or better yet somehow get worse. Only thing you can do is start a new save without the DLC and you'll have to delete the dlc to do that (not even sure thats a 100% work around). In other words EA/Bioware ****ed up... again

That is ****ing stupid. Thanks for the reply. Thankfully I already got past where I was. Still, I would love to bust out that terminus gun again. Also, I bet there are more people without Xbox Live than there are pirates. Bad move EA/Bioware....Bad move..

Odd. Twice since getting ME2, either my ISP's network has gone down locally or my modem's crapped out on me and I've disconnected from Live. Both times I've been happily running around with Zaeed in my party, using my Collector Rifle. And continued to do so offline.
The first time, I saved and quit, and reloaded later whilst my net connection was still down (Virgin told me engineers were working on it, took them 2 hours, not bad compared to the time it was out for a week over the entire city) - I was able to visit the crash site with Zaeed in my party using my collector gear.

Is this a regional issue? I'm in England and here it seems only to use the regular XBox Live DRM policy of  "You can use it offline on the console and gamertag you downloaded it on".

Well I've "tested" it a few times while I was at my friend's house and it works like this. If you are not connected to the internet and try to load a save with DLC it will not work. But if you load a save while connected to the internet, and then disconnect after the load, it will work fine. You will even be allowed to load other saves as long as you don't exit to the dashboard.

So as long as you don't close down the GAME then it only checks online when you boot the game up? Makes sense. Still really stupid though. The 360 does it with most DLC the way it does for a reason.

That's weird, I'm only ever connected to get updates then I disconnect and I've never had a problem. Maybe everyone who's having problems have messed up discs or something.

Nope - as the two of us previously have observed - it seems to work fine as long as you DO NOT CLOSE THE GAME DOWN. The moment you shut the game down and try to reload it from the dashboard while not connected to the internet, it will apparently fail to verify your DLC.

A POINTLESS extra layer of DRM on top of the 360's inbuilt DRM system, or a glitch in the Cerberus network system that we will hopefully see patched once we make them aware of it.

I have the same problem with the second dlc for me1. I dont think it is right that they think that everyone can afford or get high speed internet for that matter. where i live it would coast me an arm and a leg to get high speed even brought to my house and that freaking sucks. Now that I know that it is Bioware/EA's inability to realize that not everyone has internet connection i think i will wait as long as i can to get the new stuff from the Cerberus network(or at least make sure I have a separate game save so I dont get screwed by stupid "anti-piracy" B.S. which doesn't work most of the time anyway).

As I said, I'm reserving judgment until we learn from someone at Bioware if it's an oversight. It's possible it's just one line of code in the Cerberus Network check when logging in that can be fixed quickly enough by making it load the DLC in the background based on the licenses on your 360, instead of loading it only after the cerberus connection is established.

This really doesn't encourage me to pay for any DLC. If Cerberus Network goes down, or EA close it, I'd never be able to play any future dlc I paid for?

Just this minute stumbled across this particular issue, and it sucks. EA, Bioware, or whoever's idea this was, hang your head in shame!

Looking back through the previous pages of posts here there have been loads of people with this issue, or something similar, and none of them have been graced with a reply.

I have the same problem. I brought my Xbox to my parents house, claimed all the downloadable spoils I recieved from pre-ordering the Collector's Edition of Mass Effect 2, then brought it all home and It won't let me play the game unless I'm plugged into LIVE. This is really, REALLY annoying. I just did the exact same thing with the game Borderlands (and the Zombie Island of Dr. Ned) and I had NO issues. I would really appreciate if a Bioware representative would comment on this.

I figured it out. I brought my Xbox360 Hard drive to my brothers house to download the DLC and got the same error. To fx this problem I went to the following link:
http://www.xbox.com/...censemigration/

I transfered the Licenses to my xbox and I've been able to play the DLC  offline since. I hope that helps SOMEONE.

I transferred my licenses, although I get the feeling that something went wrong and the process didn't complete properly. Next time I have access to the internet I will try it again. It doesn't matter too much now, I am 7 or 8 hours ahead of my, previously unload able, save file.

Ohnoezz,

I did the same thing and transferred my licenses. I can now play offline with full use of dlc. After the transfer did you make sure to go to account management on your dashboard and re-download all your dlc?

It only takes a sec cuz it only downloads the licenses that MS has moved for you. Afterwards mine went fine.

Hope this helps!

I was able to play once offline. When I stopped and came back I got the missing content message! Since the release of cerebus on xbox 360 dlc, everything has been going wrong?!? I checked my premium content I have on this site and it does not show Cerebus...I am one of the "lucky" ones who got two codes for the Collector gear instead of both cerebus and collector's gear! I tried contacting EA via e-mail, live chat and phone to no avail! I caved and bought Cerebus from Xbox and feel that Bioware/ EA owe me $25 bucks for doing so...anyone else agree with this fumbled mess?

@Hudson86

Now my problem got more complicated. I recall redownloading them and being surprised that they downloaded so quickly. So afterwords I loaded Mass Effect 2 and I remember it crashing, or something going wrong and me having to restart. Then when I loaded back Mass Effect 2 I was told that some of my DLC (can't recall which) had gone corrupt and I had to redownload it. It didn't work after that, so maybe I didn't complete the license transfer... Hmmm... When I have access to live I'll be sure to try it out one more time.
